I got so absorbed in watching this trailer for Charlie Wilson's War I completely forgot that the lead actor is Tom Hanks. And this is just from a two-and-a-half minute preview. Some folks are already whispering about the Oscar potential for this film, which opens December 25.
The movie seems like it will smoothly skate that line between comedy and drama. It appears to be a character-driven story that also focuses on covert international politics in the 1980s. Hanks plays Texas congressman whose secret dealings in Afghanistan — assisting rebels in their war with the Soviets — have some "unforeseen and long-reaching effects," like, apparently forming "the backbone of Al-Qaeda and the Taliban."
The trailer implies that the real brains behind these operations is a smart, wealthy Texas woman, Joanne Herring (played with sass by Julia Roberts). I already like this movie. To check out the trailer (which, to top everything off, features some great songs), read more

Hmmm.... I was wondering what Julia Roberts has been up to lately. Looks like a winner!

3i'm reading the book right now. the author also implies that joanne herring had a lot to do with influencing charlie's interest in the mujahideen, as she was really good friends with (and honorary ambassador for) the pakistani president (the pakistanis were supporting afghanistan and working with the CIA to do so). it's a great read.
i hope the movie does the book justice, since they so rarely do (*coughdevilwearspradacough*). i guess they're going to overlook the fact that charlie wilson is 6'4 (often 6'7 in his cowboy boots), though the author talks about it constantly in the book. i've been excitedly anticipating the movie ever since wilson spoke at my university a couple of years ago and announced that tom hanks and julia roberts were going to be affiliated with it.
