Did I fall asleep and wake up sometime in the middle of season two of "Grey's Anatomy"? This is the second episode in a row that hasn't had me wanting to hurl things at my TV, and it had enough good in it to remind me of "Grey's" of old. To hear the rest of my take and add your thoughts, just read more
The two major themes in this episode were speaking (or not speaking) and losing a step with age, both of which collided in the case of the woman who needed to have her tongue removed/replaced. The Chief — and, for whatever reason, Mark — needed to prove to themselves that they were still spry enough to learn new procedures, but that got them into dangerous territory when they had to make up the surgery as they went along. Yes, it was medical history, but it was medical history that very nearly left a woman unable to talk, and I was glad Derek told them off for being too cavalier.
The other major development was the awakening of Really Old Guy, the semi-comatose man whose room the interns/new residents had been using as their personal lunch site. When he woke up, he knew everything — that Meredith and Derek are having problems, that Alex was crushing on Ava, that Izzie wants George to leave Callie. He also knows, or thinks he knows, that George won't leave Callie, and for much of the episode it looked like he was going to be right. Of course, in true Izzie fashion, she got a little too attached to Really Old Guy; who didn't know, the second she started giving him a speech about needing someone to talk to, that he was going to be dead? I liked the idea of this story, but I was expecting Really Old Guy to blab George's secret to Callie. Now that would have been interesting.
The end of the episode brought two big moments: Alex telling the other interns that George was a repeater, and George telling Callie that he slept with Izzie. Two big things that had gone a long time unsaid are out in the open now. What's going to happen next?
Some other thoughts:
- Alex's case seemed the furthest removed from the rest of the goings-on in the episode, but it did feature one of the grossest medical procedures I've ever seen on "Grey's." I think it was supposed to serve as a lesson that age doesn't necessarily bring wisdom. I wonder if that older intern is sticking around or if he was just a one-time metaphor.
- Cristina faking miserable to get surgeries was classic: "Sad is mine. Go find your own pretend emotion." I loved how Meredith really piled it on when she realized she was being played, asking Cristina to come over and cry.
- Bailey rocks. I love her proposal to Callie that they tackle this job like a team; some people have said that was a sign of weakness, but I think Bailey is sick of being angry and just wants to get back to what she does best: whipping people into shape.
- Lexie and Meredith took baby steps toward civility this week, after Lexie decided Meredith was pushing her too hard. Meredith's response was to get the file from the day Susan died and walk Lexie through it. I hope that leads to less resentment between the two.
- I'm really liking the friendship between Derek and Mark. They have a fun chemistry together; is it wrong to say they're currently my favorite "couple" on the show? And while we're at it, would you marry McDreamy?
Your thoughts? Will Callie leave George? Will Gizzie finally be broken up? Will "Grey's" stay good for a whole season?

love the show
1I liked this episode better as well. Things are getting back to normal. Christina is her old ruthless, career minded, competitive self. Alex is getting back to being the obnoxious guy we love to hate. Bailey is Bailey which is awesome. The rest of the cast is interacting well, the medical cases were good and I even like the way the new people are fitting in (Lexie and the old intern).
My two remaining issues are: Meridith and McDreamy, that needs to get solved (the right way) once and for all because the plot line is getting really old and tired, just let them get together already. And George and Izzy, that was a mistake from the start and I don't know how to fix it but they need to let it go, I'm sick of Izzy whining and George being pitiful.
2I didnt see Mers talking to Lexie as anything but her proving to lexie that 1) she didnt hate her mom and 2) that her death was a one in a million chance. I didnt see it as a sister to sister reach out.
I saw old intern guy and yelled "its the head vampire from Lost Boys!"
Alex is quickly becoming the "real doctor" at Seattle Grace.
George saying "i slept with Izzy Stevens" isnt the same as "i want a divorce"
3yes yes yes!!!!
Well said Buzz!
Can someone tell me the reasoning behind Alex revealing that George was already an intern..It left me a bit confused...
Can I smack George and izzie? George is a moron..I'm sorry but it's the truth!!!
McDreamy I love him! Meredith needs to get with him already..
McSteamy is just becoming so nice... ♥ him!
4It was a good episode. I was cracking up during most of the show, between Really Old Guy #1 & #2 (intern) and Christina's surgery-stealing tactics. But I was really pissed that Karev spilled George's secret. He's such a bastid. A hot bastid. But a bastid.
5Bailey need to be chief PERIOD!
6Buzz, you're right- this episode felt like old Grey's! I loved Alex's storyline in this with...Richard Gilmore! Woot! I hope he sticks around. I wish we knew what Alex wanted to specialize in- at first he said plastic surgery, but then working with Addison got him interested in OB, but now it looks like he could be just as comfortable with neuro. Then again, the only resident that's really claimed a specialty is Cristina, so I guess it's not weird that we don't know.
I really loved the scene with Meredith going over Susan's file with Lexie. I actually got really choked up, especially when Mer tells Lexie she was very fond of her mother. I hated that she died last season
I hope Grey's stays like this. I hate the Gizzie stuff, but I actually liked the end when George confessed to Callie and am excited to see what happens next week.
7I liked the entire episode UNTIL the last scene in the elevator. Alex's character has developed into so much more than a straight @sshole in the past episodes that I felt really let down that he busted George out. It was mean and really out of his character for who he has become now.
8I found it to be SUPER ridiculous that all of a sudden Izzy goes to talk to the old guy and what do you know? He is dead. I saw that from a mile away.
I also like the Mark/Derek combo myself...
Overall I was very satisfied with episode!
Does anyone elese hate Alex's mustache
9Ok, I might be off base here, but I thought last night's episode was BORING UNTIL THE END. That's when everything started happening. But it did leave me wanting more. I can't wait to see next week's episode.
10I actually like Alez with the goatee. The show is getting better, but I am getting tired of the back and forward with Meredith and Derek. I'm still not as into the show as I was, but maybe it'll get there for me.
11I was also really upset with Alex for spilling that secret, but it's not completely out of character for him. He and George have always had a bit of a rivalry and butt heads (and fists to heads) in the past, so maybe it was more of a lashing out at his own inadequacies the past few episodes (getting the baby stolen, almost letting the kid die). Either way it really ticked me off.
I think that the only story line that could really make me stop watching the show is if they set up Lexie and Derek to be friends "or whatever". I already kind of think Derek sucks so to do that would push me over the edge. And by "sucks" I don't mean the acting, I mean the writing...talk about not staying true to character! He's all over the place.
Oh well...I'm still hooked. There I said it
12Alex was doing sooo good i was really really liking him..then he went and did a typical "Old" Alex thing by telling on George!
My highlight was Richard Gilmore showing up to be an intern I call my bff (ikd, my bff Rose..sorry i couldnt help it) and said Richard is BACK!! (i have a problem seperating people from the Characters they play!)
Classic Baily moments!!
Good episode!
13Likes: Meredith's talk with her sister, McDreamy criticizing Chief and Mark, Cristina in 2nd season form, ROG, the tongue lady telling her friends her "last words", Callie vulnerable BAILEY!
Dislikes: Gizzie - no chemistry, Izzie (who I usually adore) is getting annoying in her cliche storylines, Meredith/Derek's little affair, Lexie is a boring character, Alex telling all the interns about George (where did that come from????), and the fact that they still haven't addressed Addison leaving
14Blame if if you want but I actually like a lot Karev's character ... he told the truth about George ... so what ? Of course it maybe was rude to make it this way but I think it was unfair to let other interns believe that George was newbie as them. After all, if he failed his exams it might be because he was not that good (and not only because Callie didn't give him her notes). Earlier in the serie, at some point I found George character touching but I hate the way he's evolving.
15I really liked this episode.
Alex was such an *sshole with George in the elevator, but I laughed because it was very in-character.
16I agree with Curlywhirl, I thought last nights episode was BORING. And the Gizzie thing is getting on my nerves. I used to love Izzie and George separately, but now they're just annoying when they are together - stop the whining and the sad puppy dog face! I can't take it anymore,Ugh! I miss the good old days when this show made me ball my eyes out - it's just seems like it's missing something.
17we are all ignoring the maaaaaaad sexual tension between lexie and alex.... it's coming (wow no pun intended).
seriously.
18I thought last night was ok. Although I am soooo tired of Izzie, she irrates me like no other
And I thought it was really mean of Alex to put George "on blast" like that in the elevator...but at the same time George deserves that cause of the whole Izzie and him thing.
And poor Callie
I hope she leaves him now.
And Meredith needs to wake up realize that McDreamy loves her with everything he's got! gosh...if all girls could be that lucky.
And I love that Derek and Mark are rebuilding their friendship!
And I love the Dr. Webber, I'm not sure why but I do!
19i love that alex did that at the end. It was so perfect for him to do that.
20SPACEBEAR, Thank you, that was so in character for Alex to do that. He was becoming to much of a softy. I think it's great when they show his soft side, but I like it when he tells it like it is!
21Ok, the whole sticking the needle in the eye thing was way nasty.
22I'm going to agree with telewyo and others in that Alex is just turning back into his old self again by ratting out George in the elevator! My bf made a good point last night: before that scene in the elevator Alex was the most likable character on the show this season...which doesn't say a lot as his reputation has always been to be a jerk. So thank goodness that he's actually getting back into character with that. And ktacce is soooo right- Alex and Lexie are totally gonna bang...it's just a matter of time.
heidihaute- you're absolutely right...this episode may have been good for what we've normally come to expect from Grey's, but I miss the time when I would be in TEARS by the end of each episode. I could always count on this show for a good cry and I don't think I've shed a tear at any of the episodes for a long time now.
23I love watching Derek and Mark together. They really do have good chemistry!
24I HATE GEORGE
LOL @ THE "Sad is mine. Go find your own pretend emotion."
Christina is so funny
25mcsteamy is the only reason i keep tuning in. i mean honestly. when is he gonna repeat that towel coming out of the bathroom scene from season 2 (or was it 3) when he was like "This is awkward...." LMFAO
26Oh I remember that about Christina, Trish...
hahhaa I'll go look for a picture of that bathroom scene for you
27I thought this episode was pretty good. My main thoughts:
281. I loathe Derek and Meredith. They're annoying the hell out of me.
2. I can't believe Edward Hermann (the old intern) was on Grey's! I still can't separate it from his Richard Gilmore character on Gilmore Girls though.
3. Omg George finally told Callie!
It was a good ep.
29In any other time I'd be hating Alex for telling the other interns that George was a repeater, but since I'm sick of George that actually made happy. I really hope that Callie can go back to be the strong woman she used to be and can kick George out of her life forever, so she can do a good job a a chief!
Izzie suck and is being really selfish! even in the last episode!
Anyways! the Christina stuff was so funny!
Oh Alex made me so MAD. He was being such a cocky *sshole! But other than that i really liked it ^_^
30am i the only one that likes george and izzy together?!?! i think its cute.
31i just need gizzie to be done. completely done.
32I may be in the minority but I was glad that Alex finally outed George. The whole episode George was all about telling the truth and honesty yet none of his peers knew that he was a repeater. Why should he get credit for something that he SHOULD know how to do, after all he's done it before. So I'm glad that Alex knocked George of his pedestal and made him reap what he sowed.
33I hate Gizzie and I hate how Callie went from being so strong, confident, and kick-ass to being weak and spineless week after week. I love Lexie, there's a lot of the Season 1 Meredith in her.
34I hate Gizzie and I hate how Callie went from being so strong, confident, and kick-ass to being weak and spineless week after week. I love Lexie, there's a lot of the Season 1 Meredith in her.
35Whoops, double post.
36I like that there's finally some humor in the show again. Yes, there are still dramatic parts, but I was laughing at most of the episode. I especially loved when Mark asked Derek if he ever felt old and Derek said "No, I'm young. I'm a fetus." Brillant. Some good old fashioned, we're talking too fast, Seriously?, Grey's dialog.
I liked this episode a lot.
37George had it coming, I totally agree with yelenerz.
38I love this episode! yes you are right it did remind me of 2nd season. They should keep it like this. I even loved Izzie on this one
39Moments I liked: Derek and Mark Friendship. Derek criticizing both Cheif and Mark. Christna is back "Me so Sad" that was hilarious and I loved it LOL. I also loved the old guy.
Disliked: Please lets get done with gizzie?! PLEASE!
