If you thought "Pushing Daisies" couldn't get any cuter than last week's pie-lette, think again. This week's episode brought us a singing Kristin Chenoweth, knitted gun cozies, and a car that runs on dandelions. I thought it was perfect, but was it too twee for you? To see my thoughts and add your own, just read more
Like this week's "Chuck," I think this second episode of "Daisies" gave us a pretty good sense of what the format is going to be. Ned, Emerson and Chuck head out to solve a case, suffering through many twists and turns but ultimately coming out victorious in their search for justice. Meanwhile, Chuck and Ned do some adorable things. Hey, I can live with that.
The case itself wasn't too hard to crack: Either Janine or the dandelion car salesguy was going to be the killer, and when the crew got Janine talking (thanks to pie), it became pretty clear that it wasn't her. But it still led to an amusing enough hour, with funny twists ("No. There are skeletons in the closet.") and creative camerawork. Reportedly, this was director Barry Sonnenfeld's last episode before the studio clamped down on the show's last budget; I'm hoping they can find a way to create perfectly staged moments like the scene with Emerson, Chuck and Ned in body bags in the dandelion car without spending a fortune.
Ned and Chuck still aren't being completely honest with each other. Chuck keeps hinting there's more to her sheltered life with her aunts; Ned keeps avoiding the fact that he killed Chuck's father. Chuck wants to know everything about Ned, and I don't think it's going to be long before she figures out that he's keeping something big from her. I can't imagine the show will keep them angry with each other for long, though — how cute was the body bag kiss? They're meant to be.
A few other thoughts:
- The flashbacks with Young Ned are quickly becoming one of my favorite parts of the show. The scene with all the dissection frogs coming back to life was hilarious. Plus, Young Ned's haircut makes me giggle.
- If there was a moment in the episode that went too far, Olive's singing was it. But I liked it — and not just because Kristin Chenoweth has an amazing voice. I loved the choreography with Digby and the floor cleaner, and I chuckled every time she had to interrupt her flow to turn more customers away. On the other hand, I don't want it to become a regular thing.
- Best narrator fun fact of the evening: "Young Chuck did not refer to a refrigerator as anything but a cheesebox until she was 17."
- I loved pretty much everything about the dandelion car factory, from the salesman who talked too fast, to the reveal that Chuck spoke Japanese, to the flashback with the dandelion girls in their Dr. Seuss-y dresses being taught to present and shimmy. Could have done without the Titanic-referencing makeout scene, but I can forgive it.
- The entire idea of Chi McBride knitting is hysterical. Also, favorite Emerson quip of the night: "Do they touch much?" "Wish they would." (Runner-up: "It's a dead end. And not the kind of dead end that you can un-dead and re-dead again like you're supposed to.")
- Best sight gag: Janine wrapped in bandages with lipstick over the gauze. Runner-up: dandelion high-five!
What did you think? Still singing the praises of "Daisies"? Or is it all so sweet your teeth hurt?

I loved it. Definitely my favorite new show.
1I am really liking this show, its a unique concept and I like all the romantic tension between Chuck and Ned...plus Emerson is so funny
2LOVE this show. i totally think kristin should randomly burst into song....but not for a whole song. little moments would be hilarious.
and this is the season for sidekicks...because chi mcbride is the best thing ever.
3Loved the dandelion high-five! But while Kristen has a lovely voice, the singing went on for too long.
4this episode was SO cute. the pie maker is HOT... i just seen him on law & order playing a pedophile and I was like awwww man no, don't ruin it for me. it didnt though. the episode was so cute.
5Kristen Chenoweth's character is definitely my favorite, but I think the singing was a bit lengthy too. The choreography made it a bit more bearable though.
As cute as it was, I couldn't help switching over to 'ANTM,' but for the most part I watched this show.
6I love it. I watched it last week cause there was nothing else on, and it looked cute. This week I made my roommates watch it with me and we all loved it!
7I really enjoyed it too which probably means it'll be cancelled after the first season.
8I love this show! I also love Chuck's plaid trench. Has anyone seen it anywhere? Fab??
9I think this show pretty much has everything, its got the mystery (solving murders, and the tricky rule that he can only keep someone alive for a minute before something else has to die..that puts an interesting spin on everything) Its got a love story (obviously, but it makes it way more interesting because they cant touch or she dies.) Its got comedy, but its so original and off beat. I think my favorite character though, is the narrotor. He makes the show.
10Love this show is so cute!
11brooke-I know I loved that too. I also loved that red and white floral dress with the blue belt and blue shoes!
12Not a bad show, but if it degrades in to "guess how many things chuck and ned can do through plastic," I will be switching it off. I honestly don't love the chuck character, so if she dies, it might be a good thing.
13i didn't think i'd like this show but it's so cute! i did like kristen chenoweth's singing, but like some others, i hope it doesn't come up every week or for an entire song. i also agree that the titanic car scene was unncessary. other than that, everything else was great!
i am interested in some of the fashion on the show - chuck's dress was cute!
14first of all, i love this show, definitely the most interesting thing on tv. but the singing was a bit much, went on for too long. chuck and ned are way too cute, even I, the hearter of all things cute had a moment where i turned to yumjimmy and said, "really? this is just a bit too much, now isn't it?" but having said that, i hope it sticks around. If not for the weekly-twee escape, then for the pie maker and the pies.
Oh and is anyone else sort of bummed that they figured out how to touch so soon into the show?
15fantastic- like allourregrets said- it really has everything. funny, I had to get up for something and missed the whole singing thing- I guess it wasn't so bad that I got up then. Very cute and fun. Next week Chuck discovers someone died for her to be 'undead' for more than a minute. this will set up how her father died I think. I want to see more Swoozie Kurtz (sp?) as the one-eyed Aunt!
16I loved it when the bad dandelion car maker chased after them in a Hummer!! I definitely didn't expect that! My hubby and I were laughing our a$$es off! And when Olive was singing that was really funny and cute. I liked that it wasn't expected and she kept going on and not just stopping. It reminded me of Family Guy, how they take the jokes or extra scenes too far and just keep going. I thought it was funny.
I want Olive to land up with Ned. I don't know Chuck just annoys me. Why the heck does she have to insist on driving up front if she can accidentally die? And I think they were touching in the scene where she was rolling out the dough and shaking the flour in Ned's pie shop.
I really like the show but for someone that can die just by touching him she certainly takes a lot of chances...like when they sit opposite each other at the tables...hello!!?!?!? they can touch knees or feet!!! I know that always happens to me when I sit at a booth or a small table. Sheesh, that annoys me.
Ned is hot...so adorable...he can make you melt with his eyes.
17I. LOVE. THIS. SHOW. Chuck and Ned are downright adorable. I thought the song went a little too long, like most, but all in all, nothing on this show is too sweet for me. The narrator is fantastic and I'm continually impressed with the beautiful visual style. Wednesdays are quickly becoming my favorite night (especially when Lost comes back!) of TV over last season's Thursdays.
18i absolutely love it! i really need to call my cable company for an high definition box. i love these colors! i should be high on some kind of drug while i'm watching
19I'm diggin it! It just makes me crazy how Chuck and Ned are always standing so close to each other. They might accidentally rub up against each other then she would be dead. I'm glad they got to "kiss" this episode, too. Oh, and I love how Chuck always asks the undead "Do you have any last requests?"!!!
20i love it, it seems to carry the background music of amelie and the royal tenenbaums, two of my favourites. and agreed with sherbear, the colours are fantastic!
21THIS SHOW IS OUTSTANDING!! I can't praise it enough - cute, clever, and colorful. I am totally in love with all of the main characters.
I initially became interested in the show because of Kristen, so I was in stitches last night when she broke out in song. I hope to see it every few episodes!!!!!!
(and my favorite part was the dandy high five)
22I want to see the Aunts break into song too - I think the one Aunt was Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors. She has an amazing voice!!
23I love this show, but there is one thing that bugs me--there's SO much cleavage from every female character. Chuck, Olive, and the dandelion girl all had outfits that showed a ton of cleavage, and to me it was just distracting. They shouldn't have to resort to things like that to try and get people to watch!
24I loved it and I even got my husband to watch and like it too! The singing went on for entirely too long (but the interruptions were funny). I'm wondering if with each episode, Chuck and Ned will figure out another "loophole" to them touching. As soon as I saw the body bags I thought "ooh, that's how they can touch!"
25Oh, and the gun cozies...HYSTERICAL.
26i have to say this show didn't really appeal to me when i first heard about it, but i happened to catch the pie-lette, and i am hooked. it is refreshing to see such a new take on prime time tv. this show is simply adorable, from the dialog to the over the top and utterly amazing set design, they really have made something special. though i am going to have to agree with lizzle - there is a lot of cleavage and i do wish they would tone it down a bit.
27i think i really love this new show, but something is holding me back from saying i love it just yet, i'll just have to keep on watching!
28lalalalalove it!
29I missed last nights but I loved the first one!!
30hahaha...the cleavage obviously didn't distract me. i didn't even notice all the cleave you guys are talking about. thanks! now next time i'll be too distracted by that to see what's going on. what's this stuff about the budget cut? what does that mean for the show?
31♥ Luv this show!!
32I'm totally in love with Ned! He is the most adorable thing ever.
33I love this show and ned is HOT, but I absolutely CANNOT STAND Chuck. Can she get any more annoying???
34I missed the 2nd episode but i saw the first one. Thanks for keeping me posted.
35im in love with this show!!
Chuck and Ned
36this show is now a can't miss for me, i'm glad i have something to watch wednesday nights!!
37I told my husband all about this show after I saw the premiere, and he was really skeptical. After I showed him the pilot ("pie-lette" hee hee) online and we watched last night's episode, he's just as hooked as I am. All night, he kept saying, "B*itch, I was in proximity!" and laughing hysterically. I love this show!!!
38Still lovin' this show! The song bit was a little too long though.
39itchyworm — do you want to marry the show and have little half-human, half-show babies?
that was one of my favorite lines last night!
40I love this show. I love how it is visuals- and dialogue-driven. Yeah, the plot is great, but I love how they talk. (While Olive was contemplating how much she loved Digby for giving her attention when the Piemaker wouldn't, Digby was contemplating how much he loved salt.) I went to the official website to read the actor bios. Almost all of them have serious stage acting experience, which explains why they seem to be so comfortable with the quirky conversations. (You need to feed it [Chuck's brain] some warm milk and a turkey sandwich and sit it in a warm spot to take a nap.)The staredown between Janine and the PI over his half-eaten pie was also pretty funny.
41Continuing my love affair with PD. Loved the car...which seems to be a hybrid of a PINTO/A GREMLIN and a YUGO...either way not a great ride. Loved the song sequence...prefect song for such a melancholy situation...which in mind can only get even more mopey for Olive since Chuck & Ned are bonded beyond reason...and finally I am a big music fan so if they want to use more musical segements like they did with Olive well that's fine by me...I do understand that I am in the minority on that idea
42I love, love, love it! It's quirky and fun!
43Definitely the best new show on television. It's so original and cute! All the characters are likable!
44"Ned is hot...so adorable...he can make you melt with his eyes."
LOL JMAST
MELT WITH HIS EYES
HAHAH
i think he's pretty cute, i missed this episode last night tho..
45Thank goodness for reruns
i also heart this show and ned. i don't love chuck because she distracts me by how much she looks like my aunt. i could so do without the singing.
46Yup - love it! It's great to see something that's so different and quirky. My only complaint and I realize that it's a writing style and one that I quite like but sometimes they're all talking too fast. Doing the run off talking can be fun but I think they abuse it just a tad.
47Oh ya, forgot to say that I think Ned is downright dreamy!
48love this show. it's pure awesome. singing was a bit lengthy but other than it was super!
49i'm yet another lovah of PUSHING DAISIES! i kind of want olive and ned to end up together too... but kind of not. will wait and see what happens!
