"This is not my Addison." — Chief Richard Webber
Wasn't that quote, from the very first scene of "Private Practice," a funny way to start the series? It set us up for what we were about to see: an Addison different from the one we saw on "Grey's Anatomy," for better or worse.
Maybe it was a case of having low expectations going in, but I didn't think the first proper episode of "Private Practice" was awful. And yet, it was still a long way from being must-see TV. I didn't think it was bad, per se — just utterly ordinary, without a whole lot to bring me back. To hear my thoughts on it and share your own, just read more
For ease, I'm going to divide this into three categories: The Good, The Bad, and The Meh.
The Good
- Addison and Richard's scene in Seattle Grace. I'd been expecting the more demure resignation scene from these clips, so I was glad that it was reshot to be more dynamic.
- The chemistry between Amy Brenneman's Violet and Paul Adelstein's Cooper. One of my issues with the show is that it seems cobbled together from people from other canceled series (Tim Daly, Taye Diggs, etc.), but these two and their characters have a depth to their relationship that nobody else does yet.
- Dell the receptionist getting something to do. I really like Chris Lowell, and I was worried he was just going to be surfer-boy eye candy, so I'm glad he's an aspiring midwife who will actually get to add to the show in ways other than looks.
- Audra McDonald as Naomi. I can't say much about her chemistry with Addison yet, but I did like the way she kept Addison's hiring a secret from the other co-op members and then told Addison she needed to be "her someone." Much like Meredith being Cristina's "person," eh?

The Bad
- The Addison-dancing-naked scene. Actually, that scene was fine — it was the scene that followed, with her babbling awkwardly to Sam about looking good naked, that made me cringe. And I hated how by about 17 seconds within Addison's arrival at Oceanside, everyone knew that 1) Sam had seen Addison naked and 2) Pete had kissed her.
- Some of the medical stories at the co-op seemed like the writers were making it up as they went along. There were no shock paddles for the guy who had a stroke, but there were for the girl delivering her baby? They're a well-respected alternative medicine center that can't get to an ambulance in under 20 minutes? I liked Addison's struggles with moving into that kind of environment, but some of the details seemed like a stretch.
- That one actress wailing "give me his sperm, now!" Thankfully, she went away quickly.
- The medical cases themselves. Addison's was juicy, but the other two didn't interest me at all, especially because Sam and Naomi's only served as a referendum on the state of Sam and Naomi.
The Meh
- Addison. I still can't tell if she's going to be strong, stubborn Addison or weak, ditzy Addison. We saw both here — the strong (her refusing to leave Oceanside) and the weak (the babbling about being naked).
- The lack of spark. I thought the episode was utterly OK overall, with nothing compelling to get me to watch again. I keep thinking back to that opening scene, with Richard saying "I'll keep your job open as long as I can." Does that apply in real life, too? Can Kate Walsh go back to "Grey's" if this doesn't work out?
So, what did you think? Better than you were expecting — or worse?

I enjoyed it... I mean it left me wanting to know more about the characters which was a good thing, and I enjoyed the psych case... and the differesnt approche to medicine in general instead of just cutting ect... I look forward to the next episode...
1i loved it alot! awesome show!
2I liked it & plan on watching again next week. It wasn't spectacular, like you said, but I love the characters & I want to see how Addison grows from this. I liked the psych case too.
3And Kate Walsh looks amazing!
4Didn't watch - there were too many other things more attractive in that time slot.
5I think the best part was the storyline with Violet and Cooper. I totally enjoyed the chemistry between them. And I'm watching it more for Amy Brenneman anyway! I love her! Kate Walsh may not be able to sustain a series on her own but I think the supporting cast can do it no problem! It may very well become it's own show and not a Gray's spin off.
6I tried to get into it but it wasn't must-see TV for me. I like Tim Daly's character a lot but with Addison, not really buying it. He could melt the ice off of anyone but I liked the chemistry between Addison and Alec on Gray's more than this. Addison was such a strong character on Gray's and although they weren't "dumbing her down" as much like they were on the pilot she still wasn't the amazing Addison from Gray's. I'm not sure yet if I will be tuning in every week.
7I actually liked the other actress from the pilot that played Naomi...she was Kelly on King of Queens. Audra MacDonald just didn't do it for me. I believed the other actress ( sorry can;t remember her name!) and Addison could have really been friends.
8i'm not quite sure what i feel about this one yet... i hope that it starts to have it's own identity soon
9kate walsh does this weird thing with her mouth...did anyone else notice? it bothered me when she was on grey's. well that and the fact i found her annoying. she seems to be even more annoying on this show so...i don't think i'll watch.
10i wasnt overly impressed with it but i'm not gving up yet! I do think the whole doctor office set up is a little annoying but it might get better. it makes me miss grey's and i wish kate walsh was still on there..
11I agree with you Buzz..Something doesn't strike me just right yet...I didn't feel super great at the end..but I am curious..We'll see if this show grows on me..or not
12Not sure about it yet...I will tune in again next week and hope it gets a little better. That being said, I didn't hate it just din't love it either!
13I only saw bits and pieces and what I did see was just ... ok. I'll tune in next time to see if it gets better.
14it certainly wasn't an attractive pilot episode.
15I was bored within 5 minutes. There was no energy to the show, and a lack of charisma from the characters. I might give it one more shot, because I know that pilot's are tough, but only one more from me. It couldn't hold my interest, and the cases were SUCH a stretch, even by TV doctor standards!
16Yes it def. was not my favorite. I didn't like Addison on Grey's when she came (I mean of course she was taking McDreamy away from Meredith) but then I learned to love her. I wish she had stayed on Grey's but hopefully I will learn to love her on this. I will keep watching I am sure.
I agree though about the shock paddles. That annoyed me the most. I mean poof that guy was dead and no one there could use anything in that office to save him??
17I watched but very bored. Unbelievable that they wouldn't have tried to save the older guy with paddles (as stated above) and I HATED the small talk between Tim and Kate WHILE she is cutting this girls abdomen open. focus please and resume the flirting later! Stories were interesting but may be if they were set up to be more suspenseful like GA and ER do- or maybe they are trying to get away from being a medical drama? Not sure where they want to go with this. I will try and watch and see. Addison- stop the naked dancing, please!
18I thought it was OK..it left me feeling a little underwhelmed. When Addison first joined Grays I loved to hate her for breaking up Meridith and Der..and then I grew to really like her character. I don't think they brought her same great characteristics to this show. A lot of it was cheesy to me..her trying to talk herself into doing the surgery and "stop Addisonning me"? Also, this new Naomi, I feel like she has no chemistry with Sam so I can't imagine they were ever married. I hope it gets better, I will definitely give it a few more chances.
19I agree with you, Sofi, about the flirting over the C-section. I also didn't buy that Addison, no matter how distracted or flustered, wouldn't have noticed her patient passing out. I always had the impression that Addison, no matter how much of a wreck she was in her personal life, was a top-notch doctor. God forbid we actually have a strong, competent, successful woman on television.
20As much as I like Kate Walsh and love Taye Diggs, this show didn't capture my attention and about 7 mins in, I switched to Kitchen Nightmares. Also, I think Audra McDonald is far too good for Private Practice.
21It was ok, I guess. I love the cast but the medical story lines seem to be lacking. I admit I did get a bit bored and was on the internet while the show was on. I don't know, I will give it a few more weeks because Addison is one of my favorite characters from Grey's so I hope it gets better.
22That's a really good point, Sofi — I'm not sure if this show wants to be a medical drama or a drama about people in their late 30s/early 40s or what!
23I'm not watching just on principle; if I don't watch, and if everyone I talk to doesn't watch, then the ratings go down, and she goes back to old-Addie on Greys! YAY!
24I've always thought of Addison as this strong, I'll fight for the things I want in life Addison. Not the I'm alone so let me move and then dance aaround naked in my new place. What was that??? The only thing I liked about last night was when she had stood up for herself in the end and she had that big speech and then she thought she had a big finish but didn't but then did. I'll watch just to see if things changes...
25Oh I thought it was so boring. Seriously, I kept watching hoping it would get better, but there was nothing that really held my attention for long. I love it how The Chief of Surgery said he'd "keeep her position open as long as he could." Perhaps if this series flops, there will still be a place for Addison on Grey's.
26It was okay...My tivo was too full and "ate" the episode of Grey's where Addison first visited Oceanside so I was really interested to watch. I have to say that I am drawn more to the male characters on the show and the 2 other females just are not drawing me in. I loved Addison on Grey's and saw sparks of that character about halfway through this show. I hope that it gets better through the rest of the season!
27I was thoroughly bored by this episode last night. Regarding the "I'll keep your job open" line- I thought the exact same thing, Buzz! Does that mean that if the show gets canceled then Addison goes back to Grey's? Also, my bf made a really good point last night- Seattle Grace has lost two of their head surgeons with both Addison and Burke leaving...and they haven't hired anyone else? That seems a little off- can the hospital really afford to lose two top surgeons without replacing them? (On the other hand, I bet the Grey's casting budget can!) So maybe something will come of that. I don't think I'll be going out of my way to watch any more episodes of this show. Gossip Girl is on at the same time and waayy better
28It was a mistake for her to leave Grey's! This show was boring and what was with that awful babbling at the end about not letting them vote because she was already there and she doesn't have a way to finish her rant, blah, blah, blah. I love Kate Walsh but that scene made me cringe!
29Phasekitty- I agree, Gossip Girl is better.
30I like watching gossip girl more because the actors are relatively unknown and I have an easier time believe they are who they're pretending to be. But with Practice most of the characters are played by TV vets and are doing enough to embrace their characters and make it their own. When I watch Taye Diggs I'm watching Taye Diggs not his character on the show. I just think they need to step it up.... including the writers/producers. Give us something juicy (and believable) next time!
aren't* doing enough..
31Something interesting I just learned: Apparently, the first version of the episode had Addison ending her speech after she said she didn't have a big finish. I'm SO glad they at least let her have a big finish! If she'd just sat there weakly after that, I would have been so disappointed.
32i actualy really liked it..
33im gonna keep on watching!
I thought it was great. They have a lot to do, to get it to Grey's status, but there's lots of character building that has to go on with everyone so I think it'll be a little slow for the first few eps.
On another note, I think Addison has to change. She can't be the same women she was at Seattle Grace, and I thought that was the whole point of her moving. To change.
34Boo for bad grammar! I meant woman not women.
35Did anyone else remember that girlfriend trying to get the married man's sperm plot from another show? It was the exact same plot (I just can't remember the other show)! That, I thought, distracted from the rest of the plot for me. So did the cutting of Merrin Dungey who I loved on Alias and loved on the pilot of Private Practice. I was not as impressed with the expressiveness of her successor. I will give it another chance though.
36I didn't dislike it, but I didn't like it either. It seemed more like a show you watch on Lifetime as opposed to primetime. Now the show that came on after it Dirty, Sexy, Money? That show was awesome.
37where is my strong, b*tchy, badass addison? i do not recognize this strange woman. i am so disappointed in this show. i'll try to stick with it and hope it gets better, but i just want her to go back to grey's and back to being awesome and confident, not lame and neurotic *coughmeredithcough*.
fortunately, dirty sexy money was just that: dirty and sexy. pure late night trash, and i love it. now if only PP could get its sh*t together, wednesday might be a good tv night for me.
38Let's hope the naked dancing died last night never to be revived again! And apparently "FOCUS" is the catch word we're all supposed to latch onto! I just hope the writing team finds a focus.
39wow I totally thought the show sucked. The script was soo blah, and unoriginal and the cast had NO, absolutely, NO chemistry together!! I think its going to be cancelled and it should be!
40I agree with Buzz, there was nothing in the first episode to keep me coming back. I don't think I'll tune in again.
41I wish I had a DVR or TiVo.
42This show will probably be canceled soon like Joey.
43nah...it was totally boring i tune in during gossip girl commercials but only for 5 minutes, and it was totally boring watching many adult who tries hard to convince audience to watch them...
44Buzz, I'm with you all the way on your assessment of PP. I liked it more than I expected to, but I really wasn't expecting much which is why I'm not too disappointed. I'll probably keep watching for awhile to see if the plot lines and characters grow beyond the ordinary. Here's hoping...
45I'm with DH31, Violet and Cooper all the way. I hated how they ditzed out Addison. We do not need an Ally-McBealed Addison. And Kate has absolutely no chemistry with Tim. I'll keep watching, but only time will tell whether I end up taping and fast forwarding over Addison storylines.
46i'm not watching this for a while so if i decide to i'll see if you guys' opinion changes in the next few episodes
47Definitely worse than I expected. My Wednesday 9pm Tivo slot is going to Gossip Girl instead.
48i think this episode was sooo much better than "The Other Side Of This Life" episode. The problem is..i didn't really like Addison to begin with so I don't rally want a show just about her. Kate Walsh is a great actress, but she tends to over act, especially in Private Practice. I don't really like the new Naomi at all and I sort of want to see Taye Diggs and Addison to flirt a little..now that wouldn't be boring! Also Chris Lowell will always be the guy who ruined Logan and Veronica on Veronica Mars to me so I'm not a fan. Overall the show was better than I expected but isn't half as good as Grey's and if it is cancelled, let's hope Kate Walsh is allowed on Grey's again!
