Last week, I told you that Jay-Z is releasing an album in November inspired by the upcoming movie American Gangster. My first thought? This could be really good. But I barely had time to speculate about what it might sound like before Jay-Z gave us a little taste.
This weekend, he released a teaser video for the first track, called "Blue Magic," one of nine songs inspired by the film, which stars Denzel Washington and tells the saga of a '70s heroin kingpin in New York. My first thought after hearing the clip? This could be really, really good.
The Neptunes-produced track hinges on a menacing piano hook and has a definite '70s vibe. It reminds me a little bit of the Clipse's Hell Hath No Fury, but with a more retro urban atmosphere.
