I can't let the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards go by without sharing a few of my thoughts on the broadcast itself. Here's some of what was going through my head as the show went on:
- Despite all my fears about Ryan Seacrest's hosting, I actually thought he did a pretty great job. His writers were on the ball, getting in a few zingers — "'Weeds': A great show. An amazing afterparty." — and keeping the most annoying parts of his personality to a minimum, with the possible exception of his appearance in "Tudors" costume (pictured at right). I think the most relief I felt all night was when he announced he wouldn't be singing after all.
- I'd been expecting a "Sopranos" love-fest, but instead, the show was shut out of the acting categories, though it did take home one final Outstanding Drama Series award. Not quite the the exuberant sendoff I'd anticipated.
- At one point, there was a nearly two-hour break between major award categories. And people complain about the Oscars dragging!
- Speaking of "The Sopranos," one of the strangest moments of the night came from the Jersey Boys' tribute to the show. The ultimate tribute with all the cast members on stage was very sweet, but did anyone else find it disconcerting to watch gory, violent "Sopranos" footage with a backdrop of happy, peppy Frankie Valli songs?
- I know the announcer pronounced Katherine Heigl's name wrong, but did we need to be reminded of it two more times? No, I think not. Her mom was a cutie, though.
- One of my favorite presentations of the night: Glenn Close, Mary-Louise Parker and Kyra Sedwick offering a salute to the trend of cable shows centering on strong characters who just so happen to be women.
- I'll never complain about Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart sharing the stage together, but it's even better when Steve Carell joins them — as he did after they decided to give him the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy award when real winner Ricky Gervais wasn't present. I couldn't help but giggle at the three of them leaping around together.
- I noticed Fox cutting away to an awkward shot of a disco ball a few times in the middle of speeches. Was that their way of censoring any inappropriate swearing?
- Among the night's smaller awards, I was thrilled that Judy Davis, one of my favorite parts of "The Starter Wife," won an Emmy for her performance! I only wish she'd been there to accept it.
- Seacrest promised us this was the greenest Emmys ever: The blue carpet for winners to walk down came from recycled bottles, the stage came from existing materials, and the electricity came from "the entire cast of 'Kid Nation' backstage on treadmills."
- Why is it that the introductions for the comedy writing awards are always so much funnier than anything else on the show? Conan's writing staff won this year's award, but the Colbert folks had the best intro, showing the staffers smacking their boss around.
- Even with a better-than-expected outing from Seacrest, I'd still have preferred to see Hugh Laurie hosting.

I didn't watch, but now I feel like I almost did - Thanks Buzz. I hate that Imissed the Jon Stewert / Colbert /Carell bit. I'll have to see if it's on youtube.
1Ah for some reason I forgot they came on last night, so I missed it.
Thanks for the update
though, Buzz!
2my favourite moment was the rap with Rainn Wilson and Kanye west!!
3i loved the love for the sopranos - but extremely disappointed that they did not win more. what a rip!
4Rainn Wilson is hilarious! I don't think Seacrest did a very good job. Did anyone catch the censoring of Sally Field during her acceptance speech? I wasn't expecting that at all.
5I was thoroughly disturbed by the Jersey Boys tribute as well! I kept waiting for them to sing the theme song or Journey, but it never came, it was just really strange.
Also, did anyone else notice that they never announced who the best Guest Actor in a Drama series was? I assume that they were supposed to present the next award with the Best Guest Actress (like they did for the Best Comedy Guest Actor/Actress), but then couldn't make it and it didn't make it to the final draft of the script for the night. Wonder who it was...I was pulling for John Goodman on Studio 60.
Anyway, I couldn't have come further from winning that ballot, and kudos to whomever does, there were so many upsets last night!
6I also didnt like the way they were sitting. The presenter always had his/her back to part of the audience.
7Love Katherine Heigl's "Holy sh*t" reaction. I loved that she was generally shocked. That doesn't happen much at award shows.
8Yeah, I didn't realize that you couldn't say "goddamn" on Fox. If Sally Field was censored b/c she spoke about war then Fox should be in deep trouble.
I checked, and the FCC does not censor the use of "goddamn". Good Job Fox, sheesh.

9Ha! I missed the joke about the show being powered by "the entire cast of 'Kid Nation' backstage on treadmills." That's funny.
10I even saw Katherine Heigl whisper to the dude she was presenting with about how they got her name wrong before they even got to the stage. Talk about PO'ed
11I was not impressed with Ryan Seacrest's hosting last night. He was bland and has no comedic talent. It felt like he was the jock at school all of a sudden trying to be the class clown.
The production last night was terrible! The way they censored the speeches was sad (cut the friggin audio instead of showing footage of the giant ball above the stage). I also noticed that two of the awards were presented nominees with no winners (although they very well could have presented the winners as presenters of another award like they did with two of the categories).
12The first time Katherine Hiegl made the joke about her name was funny but after that I realized she really was mad and it wasn't a joke lol.... She is full of herself, I am a huge greys fan and I didn't think she deserved that award over the other 2 actresses from greys..
13I had my doubts about Ryan and he fulfilled them. He was boring, absent, unfunny and it pained me to watch him interact with the audience.
Why would the Jersey boys (which are a tribute to Frankie Valli) sing Journey? I found them very bouncy and Vanilla.
Everyone seemed to be self depreciating. The Family Guy montage “TV is trash” Lewis Blacks routine dogging the Network Execs, Ryan Seacrest continually talking about how no one wanted to host and what a bad job he was doing, the anti-war talk, The set up “I was sitting in the bad seats” I didn’t like the stage or the way everyone was sitting, I half expected some game show to start any second.
If I heard the phrases “Broken Trail” and “Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee” one more time I was going to don a bonnet and circle the wagons.
Tony Bennett “introduced” everyone to his wife, who he has been with since the 80’s. That man left his marbles in San Francisco methinks.
The Soprano’s coming to the stage for nothing (but to show the sweet trapdoor?) and than coming out again for their award was anti-climactic
Terry O’Quinn was wearing a pink shirt and sequined tie. I just don’t know what to say about that.
As for the Censorship, i understand why they did it, after the Janet Jackson debacle they run scared at ANYTHING.
14i love love LOVE the comedy writing awards nomination intros. those are always hilarious. and yes, better than the rest of the entire awards shows. i stopped watching at about 9:30 b/c it was boring and I needed to get ready for bed.
15and i thought it was weird last night with the disco ball cut-away. it didn't make sense and i just thought "oh they are having mic problems" but then it cut back to ray romano (being unfunny) and I was like "uhmmmm."
and i thought the FCC still censored the use of "god damn." when i worked at my college radio station, you could say "damn" but now if "god" was in front of it. "god damn" is one of george carlin's 7 dirty words and we had to memorize them all so that we didn't say them and get fined on air. maybe tv is different.
16i noticed that they didn't announce the male guest actor either. but phase, i did hear that it was john goodman (yay!!). i totally understand why they would sensor GD. i really dislike that phrase (it's right up there with the "c" word for me). lots of surprises...good and bad. loved that terry o'quinn and sally field won, as well as broken trail (great tv movie).
i agree with laurie about the comedy writers intros. they were awesome!
17Best portion of the night was easily the Colbert/Stewart bit with the Steve Carell finish.
The disco ball thing really really ticked me off. Why couldn't they just bleep the word and move on?
And that was a really poorly planned layout. I guess it was to fit with the Idol theme for Seacrest, but seriously, go back to a normal stage setup.
So glad to see America Ferrera and Terry O'Quinn win.
Mad to see Hugh Laurie get passed up for the Emmy and the hosting gig. Hugh Laurie is seriously funny and a simple piece at the beginning on Laurie's interesting British Comedy past would've easily revealed his background to the American audience. Bring in Stephen Fry!
18Great recap, Buzz. As a host, Ryan did okay, maybe because his air time was limited. His Kid Nation comment was great. Not sure that the "theater in the round" worked so well or that the tribute to The Sopranos was well conceived; I love The Jersey Boys, but the music didn't fit with the footage. Cute idea to pair all the "Jersey folk" together though, it just didn't work.
19I thought Ryan did a good job.
20I also have a last name that's hard to pronounce, and while I understand other people's difficulties with it, I appreciate that my name is pronounced correctly by other people over formalities.
And while Katherine Heigl often hears her name being botched by others, that night she was an Emmy nominee (and winner!). For a very special and important occasion like that, she should expect and appreciate the announcer to utter her name properly, and I think she handled the mistake with clarity, grace and humor.
21It's pretty bad if the announcer can't do her job right. At least have the professional courtesy to ask someone about the proper pronounciation!
