I can't let the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards go by without sharing a few of my thoughts on the broadcast itself. Here's some of what was going through my head as the show went on:

  • Despite all my fears about Ryan Seacrest's hosting, I actually thought he did a pretty great job. His writers were on the ball, getting in a few zingers — "'Weeds': A great show. An amazing afterparty." — and keeping the most annoying parts of his personality to a minimum, with the possible exception of his appearance in "Tudors" costume (pictured at right). I think the most relief I felt all night was when he announced he wouldn't be singing after all.
  • I'd been expecting a "Sopranos" love-fest, but instead, the show was shut out of the acting categories, though it did take home one final Outstanding Drama Series award. Not quite the the exuberant sendoff I'd anticipated.
  • At one point, there was a nearly two-hour break between major award categories. And people complain about the Oscars dragging!
  • Speaking of "The Sopranos," one of the strangest moments of the night came from the Jersey Boys' tribute to the show. The ultimate tribute with all the cast members on stage was very sweet, but did anyone else find it disconcerting to watch gory, violent "Sopranos" footage with a backdrop of happy, peppy Frankie Valli songs?
  • I know the announcer pronounced Katherine Heigl's name wrong, but did we need to be reminded of it two more times? No, I think not. Her mom was a cutie, though.

  • One of my favorite presentations of the night: Glenn Close, Mary-Louise Parker and Kyra Sedwick offering a salute to the trend of cable shows centering on strong characters who just so happen to be women.
  • I'll never complain about Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart sharing the stage together, but it's even better when Steve Carell joins them — as he did after they decided to give him the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy award when real winner Ricky Gervais wasn't present. I couldn't help but giggle at the three of them leaping around together.
  • I noticed Fox cutting away to an awkward shot of a disco ball a few times in the middle of speeches. Was that their way of censoring any inappropriate swearing?
  • Among the night's smaller awards, I was thrilled that Judy Davis, one of my favorite parts of "The Starter Wife," won an Emmy for her performance! I only wish she'd been there to accept it.
  • Seacrest promised us this was the greenest Emmys ever: The blue carpet for winners to walk down came from recycled bottles, the stage came from existing materials, and the electricity came from "the entire cast of 'Kid Nation' backstage on treadmills."
  • Why is it that the introductions for the comedy writing awards are always so much funnier than anything else on the show? Conan's writing staff won this year's award, but the Colbert folks had the best intro, showing the staffers smacking their boss around.
  • Even with a better-than-expected outing from Seacrest, I'd still have preferred to see Hugh Laurie hosting.
