I finally got to reading (and finishing) the Jodi Picoult book so many of you love: My Sister's Keeper. I was curious to find out why you all were outraged over the news that Cameron Diaz was cast as the mother in the story, and now that I've read the book, I fully understand. She's all wrong for that part! Not only does she seem too young to have children in their late teens, but there's nothing motherly about her... at all.
This got me thinking about how I'd cast a movie version of this book, and it's a hard task. The family in the story is so not-Hollywood, so casting the glitzy stars of today (Diaz included) seems all wrong. How would you cast My Sister's Keeper if you were in charge?
This isn't like my weekly recast challenges — I'm not going to select a cast list and put together a photo collage. I'm simply curious to hear your ideas. So tell me what you think. To see who I might cast, read more
Sara Fitzgerald (Anna's mother) — Laura Linney or Toni Collette
Brian (Anna's father) — Enrico Colantoni ("Veronica Mars")
Anna — Saoirse Ronan
Kate (Anna's ill sister) — Cheyenne Hill
Jesse (Anna's older brother) — Chris Lowell
Campbell (the lawyer) — Jon Hamm ("Mad Men")
Julia (the guardian ad litem) — Zuleikha Robinson (from The Namesake, I don't know why, but she kept popping in my head as Julia the whole time I was reading this novel)

Forte Forte
Martick Jewellery
Halston
I've never read the book, but for a role like this, I'd choose someone more capable and age-appropriate, like Felicity Huffman or Julianne Moore.
1I like Toni Collete as the mom. I could definitely see her in that part.
Having Cameron as the mom just pisses me off. The book wasn't that great (IMO - I know lots of people LOVED the book), but casting Cameron sounds like they've already set the movie up for failure.
2I completely agree with Beth. I didn't care much for the book either. Cameron Diaz as the mom does not seem right. I could also see Jennifer Aniston as the mom.
3I think Marcia Cross would play the role of the mother wonderfully. Still not sure about the daughters though.
4Toni Collette would make a great mom. Cameron Diaz...I just can't see it. Gwyneth Paltrow could work or Julianne Moore.
5I think Cameron Diaz is an awful choice for that role. I LOVED this book & think that you need someone that is motherly but a little strong as well. I like Julianne Moore for this role liks some others have said. I don't know about the daughters...I don't know a lot of young actresses names!
6Its uncanny that i JUST finished this book yesterday, on audio book, and i thought that The author completely ripped me off in the ending! As for casting?
Sara Fitzgerald (Anna's mother) — Tea Leoni
Brian (Anna's father) — Keifer sutherland("Veronica Mars")
Anna — Abigail Breslin (she is the right age!)
Kate (Anna's ill sister) — Anna Sophia Robb (who is also the right age and i think she can look frail)
Jesse (Anna's older brother) — Trevor Morgan (He was in Jurassic park 3, sixth sense)
Campbell (the lawyer) — David Boreanaz
Julia (the guardian ad litem) — (she is supposed to be a knockout) Jennifer Connelly
7I love this book and i while i like Cameron Diaz, casting her is all wrong! I think:
8Anna- Jodelle Ferland
Sara (Anna's mother)- Jennifer Connelly
Brian (Anna's father)- Mark Ruffalo
Julia- Tawny Cypress
I'm not sure about the rest, but those would be my absolute favorites in those roles.
I finished the book not long ago, and I thought that it was weird too. She almost needs to dye her hair dark, as well.
Sara - Cate Blanchett or Sandra Bullock
Brian - Kyle Chandler
Campbell - Hugh Laurie (House)
Julia - Julianna Marguiles
I am at a loss for the kids parts. I want to say Dakota Fanning for either Anna or Kate.
Can I also say that I was so upset with the way it ended?
9Caterpillar - I felt totally ripped off in the end too. I had it figured out before I got there and was so disappointed that I was right......
10omg...cameron diaz cannot pull that chacarter off... I cannot really picture her doing a serious drama role..especially this character.
11Anna: Dakota Fanning
12Kate: Emma Roberts
Jesse: Jesse McCartney
Mom: Mary Louise Parker
Dad: Denny Duquette
Campbell: Chris O'Donnell
Julia: Sarah Lancaster
I am glad that I wasn't the only one really mad at the end. I don't want to give it away to anyone, but I screamed "NO THAT ISN'T RIGHT!" when I read it. LOL
13Cameron doesn't strike me as the motherly type, but then she didn't look like she'd fit the role in Being John Malkovich either, and did very well in it.
14I totally agree with toni collette as the mom. I do not like knowing that the film seems like it is going to be all glitzy and glam, I think it might take away from the story.
15Hmmm... have any of you seen 'Being John Malcovich'? For me this role Cameron played is her saving grace, or I too would have the same perception. Maybe this role will be a good change-up for her image. Who knows? It seems iffy, but it could work.
16haven't read it yet but i can't see Cameron Diaz as anyone's mom, let alone the mother of teenagers!
17I don't know that i could recast all the characters-but i would say for Anna...Refer to Fabsugar's article New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: She's one of Cynthia Rowleys models...Fourth model down in the first column.
18Cameron Diaz? That's reeaaallly bad casting.
19i have thought about this for far too long, My Sister's Keeper is my all-time favorite book and its hard to think about who would be cast. so... here i go
Brian: Denny Duquette
Jesse: Milo Ventimiligna, he just seems perfect even though hes totally too old.
Campbell: Julian McMahon
Julia: If Cameron Diaz has to be in the movie, this would be the best role for her.
Im kind of at a lose of who to cast for Anna, Sara, and Kate because theyre all such strong and dominant characters. I'll be back though.
20A lot of people are saying Dakota Fanning as Anna, but Dakota is too small to play the role. Anna is supposed to be like 13 and i just can't see Dakota playing such a role. It doesn't seem to be fitting for some reason. but thats just me.
Sarah (mom): Toni Colette or Jeanne Tripplehorn ("Big Love")
21Brian (dad): Kevin Costner
Anna: Abigail Breslin or Dakota Fanning
Kate: Emma Roberts or Ali Lohan
Jesse:Michael Bruce Patrick Seater ("Life With Derek" Disney Channel)
Campbell: Robert Sean Leonard ("House") or
Julia: Jennifer Connolly or Rachel Weisz
Cameron did do a good job in my favorite books movie interpretation (In Her Shoes, Cameron played Maggy) but that part was totally more suited towards Cameron. I guess we'll have to wait and see. It will never change my love for the book though.
22I have read the comments above and I think alot of people nailed on who should play the roles in the movie. Cameron should definetly not play the role of Sarah, she would be more suited for the rold of Julia (guardian).
Also, Kate is Anna OLDER sister not younger. Anna is the youngest of the three children and she was genetically created to help Kate with her illness.
Sarah Fitzgerald: Mary McCormack
23Brian Fitzgerald: Enrico Colantoni ("Veronica Mars") ** I agree with buzz on this one.
Kate Fitzgerald: Kristen Alderson
Anna Fitzgerald: Abigail Breslian or Jenna Boyd
Jesse Fitzgerald: Brandon Buddy
Campbell: Patrick Dempsey
Julia: Katherine Heigel or Cameron Diaz
I read the book, liked it a lot! Diane Lane would be perfect as Sarah, the mom. Alec baldwin is a good pick for Campbell. Matthew Broderick would be good as Brian, the dad.
24This movie won't pull off the characters in th book with such hollywood actors. I think Toni Colette would be a much better choice (you should see her in the Black Balloon) and Alec Baldwin is way too old for Campell and so is the girl playing Julia. I think it would have been interesting seeing Hugh Laurie as Campell (and if nothing else, hilarious). For Anna, Saoirise Ronan would be amazing bugt I think they sould get some unknowns for the other roles. Cameron is going to completely screw this movie over which will suck because the book is amazing. I must admit though, Abgail Breslin is a good choice, because Elle Fanning is way too young to play Anna.
25Julia: Amanda Peet
26Campel: David Boreanaz
Brian: George Eads
Jesse: William Moseley
Anna: i guess Abigail Breslin
Sara: DEFINETLY NOT CAMERON DIAZ. maybee Jennie Garth
I would pick people that aren't big actors b/c when you see them for the first time in a movie based on a book you're more likely to see them as the person the author intended...My sister's Keeper is such a powerful book that it doesn't need big actors to draw people in, just the same storyline and a good director. And also when you see big actors in a movie like this you think of the other movies/shows they've done and its not the same. Now that I've found out that they changed the ending I'm even more reluctant to waste $8.00 on it
27ii totally disagree with Cameron Diaz as the Sara this would be my cast and i think its sooooo much better than the original.PLus to i loved the book and cried at the end. I heard they ruined the end in the movie.
Sara: Tea Leoni(Jurassic park 3), Laura Linney(Nanny diaries) or Diane Lane(untraceble)
28Brian: Kiefer Sutherland(24) or Matthew broderick, Patrick dempsey
Jesse:Milo Ventimiligna(Heroes) or Michael Seater from LIfe with derek
Anna: I like Abigail breslin
Kate: Annasophia Robb(bridge to terabithia) Jenna boyd(sick girl from sisterhod of the traveling pants)
Cambell:Hugh Laurie(House) because he is sarcastic like Cambell, Mark Ruffalo(Just like heaven), or Patrick Dempsey(enchanted)
Julia:Jennifer Connelly(he is just not that into you), Reese Witherspoon(Legally blonde) or Katherine Heigl(the ugly truth)
