Broken Embraces looks like classic Pedro Almodovar: a sweeping story with a heavy dose of film noir, beautiful to look at, and a dazzling Penelope Cruz. There's a reason the director and his muse always work together — he brings out her strongest performances; she serves as a captivating leading lady. (She even got an Academy Award nomination for his film Volver.)

If the trailer for Broken Embraces is any indication, Cruz may just have critics whispering Oscar again. The film follows an aspiring actress (Cruz) stuck in a marriage to an overbearing guy with deep pockets. But in secret, she's in love with her director. Yes, it's in Spanish with subtitles, but the movie looks packed with passion and mystery, which should make for some very good popcorn-eating. Check out the trailer and tell me if you agree when you read more.

I thought Penelope won fr Vicky Cristina Barcelona. I know she was nominated, but I don't think she won for Volver.
this looks interesting, but I miss the wacky crazy Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown era of Almodovar
1Oh my gosh! You're totally right leslievanhouter. I can't believe I mixed that up. Thanks for pointing it out.
2I saw this movie about 6 months ago and I loved it. Of course, when it comes to Almodovar, I can be considered as extremely partial. But I loved it. I didn't think it was his best work (*), and sometimes, there are overlong passages, but it's still Almodovar, which means that it's better than almost everything which come out nowadays...
(*) Hable con ella, Tacones Lejanos, Todo sobre mi madre.
3I would love to see this. His movies are so lush and mysterious and Cruz is best when she is in Almodovar movies.
4Cruz is delightful to watch on screen--great in Volver and VCB
