NBC is bringing "American Gladiators" back to television, aiming for a debut in the middle of the upcoming TV season. The show will follow four male and four female gladiators as they battle amateur athletes.
It's not just about physical prowess.
This show will take its cues from the original British version, which focused more on the back stories of the contestants and gladiators. An NBC executive told Variety that this show "will have the scale, scope, different characters and family drama that the U.K. version had." You know, I always did wonder what Ice was like when she wasn't whacking someone in the face with a giant foam jousting paddle.
So you wanna be a gladiator?
Lucky for you, NBC is already accepting applications. (One of the questions: "Do you work out?" Heh.)
No word yet on whether they'll still wear spandex.
Also, my fingers are crossed for the return of "assault," the awesome game with the tennis ball cannon.

1Yay! I knew there were rumors floating that NBC would be bringing it back, but YAY! it's confirmed. That show was my bible when I was a kid, and I love watching the reruns. Any word on who the host will be? I hope hope hope hope they bring back Mike Adamle! Maybe Lori (ICE) could be a host as well?
2I loved the british and south african version and they had the tackiest names, like Granite, Blaze. I can't wiat.

4say what?! american gladiator back to television. i am so there. i recently watched some episodes on espn classic the other day and i almost forgot how i freakin' enjoyed this show, and i'm not embarrassed to admit it. i mean who doesn't love seeing small-framed women and men get beaten by "zero fat, all muscle" gladiators.

8I used to watch AG all the time when I was a kid! I wonder what it will be like and what changes they'll make? However, it is kind of sad that NBC feels the need to resort to bringing back AG to get some ratings. LOL.
9Haha this is such a coincidence...I'm just starting designing and sewing me and my boyfriend American Gladiators costumes for Halloween. We starting watching reruns on ESPN classics this spring and fell in love with it all all over agan. I can't believe it's coming back, I'm so excited.
10I can't wait! My sister and I used to watch the original religiously it is early run. (We were in fourth and seventh grade.) Sometimes I'm lucky enough to catch the reruns on ESPN Classic, and I'm dying to find the ones where Dylan Bruno was a competitor!

14Ha! Thats so funny because I was watching this Celebrity Bull Fighting show, and it had Nitro on it, and I wondered if they would ever bring the show back. I think Ninja Warrior is better though, keeps me on the edge of my seat!
15As long as nothing is staged and it's REAL people fighting the sports then I might watch it.
16I can't wait for this show to come back. It will be fun to see what challenges they come up with!
