Well, the many of you who proposed that Isla Fisher would make a good Becky Bloomwood in the Shopaholic movie were spot-on with your casting. This was rumored to be true for some time, but now it's official: Isla Fisher will play Becky in the movie!
Jerry Bruckheimer will produce and P.J. Hogan (Muriel's Wedding, My Best Friend's Wedding, Peter Pan) will direct. Apparently the script version "centers on a compulsive shopper in Manhattan up to her neck in debt who ironically becomes a financial advice columnist."
To me, this makes perfect sense. Becky strikes me as funny, silly and adorable — but also smart. I think Isla Fisher can play all of these things with aplomb. Production will begin in January, and the name of the movie will be The Secret Dream World of a Shopaholic. I can't wait to see what Isla does with this part!
What do you think of Isla as Becky Bloomwood? And who should round out the rest of the cast? Who should play Becky's man Luke and her best friend Suze?

Tory Burch
Versace

The movie is taking place in Manhattan? So will this be the first book or the second or a combo of the two?
1Good question, dmblauren. I'm assuming it'll have elements from the first 2 books, and maybe even more of them. I bet you anything it will end with a proposal.
2Oh cute!!! I think she'll be great.
3Oh I love her. She'll be perfect for this!
4ohh this is great, i think she would be perfect for the role as well!!
5I cant wait!
I love those books, and Isla sort of looks like a Becky, but I wish they had kept it in London. So much of Becky's character is based around her Britishness and the London backdrop. Isla is Australian, so the accent won't be a problem, if they decided to keep Becky English, but I just hate it when they change parts of good books like this. Urg.
6This is awfully upsetting. The characters are English, the books are set in England (for the most part), the whole essence of the storylines and situations are inherently British. Setting it in the US, with an Australian actress who I doubt very much can nail this role, has pretty much ruined the whole movie for me even before it films.
7I love Isla! She's gorgeous, charming, and FUNNY. I think she'll make a great Becky!
8She's perfect!
9yay! I think I'm the one who first suggested Isla! so kudos to me! lol jk
10Shes going to be perfect! I hope they keep her as a redhead though...dont change up that natural beautiful haircolor!!!
11i agree w/ the other folks who think its disappointing that the story will be set in Manhattan. I think it should stick to the book and remain in London, I think it would lose its charm if its anywhere but (unless its a combo of book 1 & 2).
12ooh she'll be great!
13she's perfect for the part
14i've read all the books but i was hoping for it to be set in london too and i would have thought they would have some english actresses, but i'll just have to wait and see :]
15Isla will be perfect.
16Yep I agree with others - changing it too much will ruin it, esp. changing the setting.
17I am so excited. She will be great!
18okay i've read most of the books and i gotta tell you that becky bloomwood is annoooooying! half the time i'm thinking "what the hell, becky! you're smarter than this"
but i still read it, eh. quick reads
but anyways, YES on isla fisher
she doesn't annoying and i like her and she would make a good less annoying becky
but hey
19isn't becky british?? what's going to to happen here?
i love isla fisher!! i think she'll be great in this movie too
20Annoying??? More like HILARIOUS!!!! I think what goes through her mind has gone through all of our minds...she just acts on it!
21can't wait! this was the first i saw they were even making a movie based on the books. I am in the middle of "Shopaholic and Baby" right now.
22I hope it's not official that it's set in Manhattan. As people have said before, the Britishness of the books is part of what makes them what they are. That's like taking Bridget Jones and trying to make it American. I really don't think Bridget Jones would be what it was if the director/producer decided to set it in America. It's not.
Richard Armitage from North and South should be Luke (although I can't recall if there is a description of him and if so, what he looks like). He definitely can play a brooding part (Luke when in Manhattan). Or at least, make the rest of the cast British (if they make the movie set in London).
23To me, the essence of the settings of the first and second books is the fact that they're in killer shopping locations. I LOVED the fact that Sophie Kinsella brought Becky to what I'd long deemed the Mecca of shopping, in my teeny tiny American brain, so I think if this movie can highlight the hilartiy that ensues when Becky is swallowed up by retail, in both Manhattan AND London, then the movie should be great. I don't like how the premise has Becky as a shopaholic who haplessly decides to become a financial advisor, though, because that isn't the way any of the readers were introduced to her in the first book.
Back on topic: I think Isla will be great. Who on EARTH will play Suze though?
24YAY! I don't care who plays the parts as long as it's going to be a movie. I'm excited!!! (I do think that Isla would make a great Becky.)
25She'll be fabulous, didn't think of her, but will be perfect, good job those of you who called it!
26Isla seems like such a perfect choice!
Luke Wilson seems like an adorable choice to play Luke, but maybe he doesn't look "serious" or brooding enough. Maybe Clive Owen... but he seems so much older than Isla. Hmm... Michael Vartan maybe?
For Suze, maybe someone like Reese Witherspoon or Kate Hudson?
Oh, I just can't wait for this movie!
27oh, i forgot this was being made into a movie!
why don't they start it off in
england so that they have a few sequels that they can have after it?!
28I'm with all the others angry about change, agree with Mokona I thought of Luke Wilson to play Luke as well and Reese could be cute as Suze...
29OMG....Love these books!!!
30The movie doesn't sound like it will resemble the book at all:
"Title: THE SECRET DREAM WORLD OF A SHOPOHOLIC, (aka CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC), Feature Film. CAST, Isla Fisher; PROD, Jerry Bruckheimer, Mike Stenson, Chad Oman; DIR, P.J. Hogan; SCR, Tracey Jackson. Shoot Dates: November, 2007 (in New York). STORY: The film is about a 25 years old woman who investigates bank fraud deals with the stress of her job by endlessly shopping. She ends up hopelessly in debt, but her work leads to love when she becomes romantically involved with a man she is investigating. Breakdown-- Suze: Late 20s, African-American or Puertorican. Rebecca's best friend. Suze is the "kind of girl you'd want as a best friend. If Rebecca is a white wine spritzer, Suze is a good solid bottle of bud". Warm, down-to-earth, with common sense, a receptionist for a firm that sells undersized furniture to hotels, Suze is about to get married to her live-in boyfriend, Danny, but she always has time for her friend Rebecca. Deeply concerned about Rebecca's mounting debt and apparent inability to resist anything that smacks of a sale, Suze does her own version of damage control for Rebecca, helping her go through all her bills and later forcing her to enroll in a shophaholics anonymous group. Suze appears to be without limit to her generosity to Rebecca, and somewhat of an enabler, but when she discovers that Rebecca has not only lied to her but discarded her bridesmaid's dress, Suze has reached the end of her rope.. Lead. (Posted: August 21, 2007)"
31Chelle58- Totally doesn't sound like the book at all!
I agree with everyone on regarding being based in London... hello, can you imagine Bridget Jones in NYC? Would never have done as well! Also, I HATE the new name.. what's wrong w/ the name of the Book? Flows much better!
32I always thought Catherine Zeta Jones fitted the character. She is Walsh, British, or at least she has the accent. And she be great in a romantic comedy like this. Too bad, but Isla isn't too bad I guess.
33If they wont keep Becky British at least keep Luke British!!!
34We think that Patrick Dempsey should play Luke and maybe Leslie Mann as Suze...we really think that Becky should be played by Kat Deely (So You Think You Can Dance Host) wouldn't that be great? Well anyways we are rooting for McDreamy!
35I love Isla as Becky... but am soooo not happy with it being set in New York - and I'm a New Yorker! I have been in love with these characters for so long and had always hoped there would be a movie... but I had hoped it would be done right! I think Colin Firth would make a great Luke... but I am not won over by the girl playing Suze yet. I could see Imelda Staunton as Becky's mom... and I want to say Jim Broadbent as her dad, but that's a tad to Bridget Jones.
36Why is it based in Manhattan?????? WTF.
37It should be in LONDON!
Please don't killl the Britishnesss of the book. sucks.
I agree that it is a big disappointment that the film is set in New York instead of London, it just takes away the whole meaning of the book. The london tube, the street shops, the fact of suze and her friends (cousins) being rich english folk. I suppose I'll have to settle with the way it is, just hope it doesnt ruin the series for me. I think Isla Fisher is a great actress, I loved the role she played in 'Definitely Maybe', but to me personally she is not how I imagined Rebecca Bloomwood to be. Maybe its the fact that I saw Rebecca as an english student type, living in a London flat and finding it hard to keep a living, and if its in New York... it is just like some glamourous fairytale, when the story itself actaully seems to be based around the problems that life brings.
38Isla Fisher is a good choice, she's bubbly a bit ditzy and intelligent, although she better be able to pull off a good English accent. I do wonder why these directors and casting agents always chose somone from another nationality. Are there no English actresses out there that could be Becky?? I really hope this doesn't go the same way as PS. I Love You. No offence to Americans, but letting Hilary whatsherface play the lead completely ruined it. Holly and her family and friends are bloody Irish. She had a harsh quality to her in the book but letting and American actress play her just hammed it up to much for me. It wasn't realistic, it wasn't true to the writer and it made it just another Hollywood chick flick, which is a shame. i really don't want this happening to 'Shopoholic' because I love it.
I think Paul Sculfor would be good as Luke (the English guy Jen Aniston dated)and as for Suze, that's a tough one. Maybe they would do better to cast all unknowns that fit in with the character description rather than force the description around some American actor.
39Becky Bloomwood had to go through alot before she could make it in New York to become a personal shopper...I'd love to see the scene where she's in the TV studio when everything falls apart and see how Isla Fisher acts that out. Will the movie start out with Becky already with Luke? What about Alicia b*tch Long Legs? I'd love to see her in the movie! When would we really get to meet Suze?? And how are we supposed to see Tarqie?? I'm excited to see how this movie will play out, and I really hope I'm not disappointed!!!
