When I first heard that Scarlett Johansson was recording an album of Tom Waits covers, I didn't quite know what to think. Sure, she proved she could sing when she joined Jesus and Mary Chain onstage at Coachella, but Waits's music seemed like an odd — and challenging — choice for the actress.
Now, Pitchfork has revealed some new details about the album, and it actually sounds quite promising. It's being produced by David Sitek of TV on the Radio — a band that knows a thing or two about production — and will feature members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. She's been recording in Louisiana, according to the Daily Advertiser newspaper in Lafayette, which reports:
Wal-Mart, margaritas and music was the life for Johansson, who spent 33 days in Maurice recording her debut CD at Dockside Studio. Owned by Steve and Wish Nails, Dockside is a 12-acre recording complex hidden along the Vermilion River. ...
Johansson, star of The Horse Whisperer, Girl with a Pearl Earring and other films, worked from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily in the studio with producer Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Celebration also performed on the recordings, which Steve Nails describes as cinematic rock.
"It's like theater, big screen," said Nails, who sat in on all the sessions. "Lots of heavy bass tones in it."
Wow, apparently Scarlett is even hipper than I thought. What do you guys think? Would you buy her album?

Tom Waits is my musical equivalent of Jesus, so I was really nervous when I heard about this. But now that I've heard Mr Waits has given his seal of approval, so I'm looking forward to it.
1I wouldn't buy her album, but I'm definitely interested in listening to it.
2While I'm not saying she isn't talented as a singer, I'm just so sick of actresses who can sing thinking that they HAVE to record an album. The same goes for singers thinking that they HAVE to act.
3same as figurine... i'll listen to it online or if someone else owns it, but i wouldn't get it myself.
4Like others, I definitely will listen to this, but doubt that I would actually own it.
5I'm really looking forward to checking it out! And, I don't blame people who try to cross lines. If I had a chance to record an album - regardless of my day job - or act in a movie - regardless of my day job - I'd jump at it!
6I'd buy it if it were good. Although, I'd be much more interested in a album full of karaoke'd songs done with Bill Murray!
7...yeahh..right.
8I'll listen to it.
9this sounds really interesting, I love Tv on the Radio. Scarlett seems smarter than most other actresses that have attempted to become singers, and she's probably just doing it because she can
10I was worried about the market flooding with these Lindsay Lohan-type-lipsynchers.
11Hope Scarlett is good, and changes the tide!
i don't personally care for her as an actress but i may check it out.
12wow, this is all news to me. apparently i don't spend enough of my working hours on celebrity gossip sites . . .
anyway, i won't run out and buy it, but if i hear it and/or somebody recommends it to me, i'll probably burn it from someone.
13While I generally feel that actors/actresses and singers/musicians should stick with their forte, I think Scarlett is wise about her decisions choosing scripts and I don't see her doing anything that would endanger her acting career (like launching a CD if she can't sing) so I am interested in hearing this.
14Like when singers try to act, Scarlett should be able to try singing. I'll give it a chance.
15i'm not a tom waits fan, so this doesn't exactly make me want to run out and buy it immediately. if i heard a song on the radio or online somewhere and i liked it, MAYBE.
16ahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahah NO!
17Exactly PinkLipstick!!!
18i wouldnt buy it. i dont disgree with her recording an album, but i am getting annoying at actresses turned singers and vice versa.
19Wow, she was recording so close to my hometown. Maurice is a hole in the wall. I had no idea they had a recording studio out there. It figures, now that I've moved out of Louisiana Hollywood decides to invade *pout*.
20hrmmm. might be interesting...
21i would definately have to hear it first before i bought it. i think dating JT probably made her want to do. i dunno, it may be interesting. people have surprised me before.
22I'll listen to it, but I don't think I will buy it.
23Interesting....we shall see, I suppose.
24I would definitely buy this (I think so) beautiful album,
25because I like Scarlett's voice very much!
It's an difficult theme, actually - "Tom Waits", the so called
"Comedy Underdog" - But, I'm sure Scarlett will sing his songs
in a divine way. Ahhh, she's so sweet when she's singin'!
I read on stereogum that a lot of Tom Waitts fans were actually happy with the way it sounded. Her voice sort of reminds me of the girls who sing for the Cocteau Twins. It's deep and not what I expected but I can't say I don't like it. Yeah I will buy it same reason why I bought the Carla Bruni album.
