Those of you holding out for Paula Abdul to return to American Idol this season can stop holding your breath: Ellen DeGeneres is taking Paula's spot as the fourth judge!
Fox confirmed the news this afternoon in a press release, with Ellen saying:
I’m thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol. I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote.
Ellen tweeted her excitement, and I'm excited, too, as this solves the mystery of who will be the fourth judge since Paula confirmed she was leaving Idol early last month over contract negotiations.
Ellen had a memorable run as a guest on this past season of So You Think You Can Dance, so I'm looking forward to her as a judge. (It's rumored to be a five-year deal.)
What do you think of the announcement of Ellen as AI's new judge?

I love Paula.
1Ellen? Wow. I like Ellen, but I thought she already has a daily show too, how is she going to divide her time between the two shows?
2I don't think this will work out well at all. Don't get me wrong, I love Ellen... I watch her talk show every day. She is funny as hell but she is funniest when she stands alone. I really don't see her meshing well with the other judges especially Simon. She also tends to talk a lot. Time is already an issue with the judges giving their comments. I can just imagine AI going over their time limit and cutting off other shows. I don't think I will watch this season. Paula was the best.
3UGH, thank god for DVR so I don't need to watch or listen to the judges.
4Is this April Fools?
5Is Ellen living beyond her means? Does she need the cash because I can't imagine why she would lower herself. I smell a disaster on the level of Rosie O'Donnell on The View.
6I'm confused about why she was selected for a singing competition...
7I think this is brilliant! Ellen will be a great judge on AI.
8holla.
9i think its weird. how much do you think they're going to pay her? more than they were offering paula i bet. i think this was a strange choice
10This is strange..but I do love me some Ellen.
11I get why she was chosen in that she has long professed her love for AI and always brings on contestants to her own show.. but after seeing her guest judge on SYTYCD, I'm a little worried. She seemed to spend a lot of time compensating for harsher comments from judges with more relevant experience.. But at least she will continue to add a more optimistic voice to the judging..
12I just cannot imagine how she would fit in with the rest of the cast. She will painfully try to be funny, wordy, and witty with every breath.
13wat she has no musicl experienc I AM OUTRAGD omg i lov paula poaula come back or ge tanothr reality show
14I am excited and will probably watch Idol for the first time in many seasons just to see her!
15I Can't See Her In American Idol.. How Is She Going To Criticise People's Singing?? She Is Just Gonna Look Weird.. Lol.. Sorry..
16I love her. Ellen can do no wrong. (Heck, I may even watch the show now.)
17I think it's a really interesting idea - outside the box. Let's give her a chance!!!
18I love Ellen but I'm not sure about her on AI.
19i heard about this on the Today show this morning and i think that it's great for her, although i'm not sure that i get the whole link there with her and music. oh well...i'm sure that they have their reasons and we'll see how she does on the show soon enough. she's going to be one busy woman right?
20I watch SYTYCD and I thought it was great when Ellen guest judged on it. She was funny, and she provided a positive comment, especially when somebody just got slammed by the judges. Sometimes I think it helps to have criticism followed by something positive so that you are not brought down by all the criticism. And Ellen has professed a love of dance and music and I always enjoyed watching her dance on her show so I could see why they brought her in as a guest judge.
Isn't that what Paula did - be the positive, uplifting judge? Wasn't she softer on the contestants than the other judges? So maybe Ellen will do okay.
21Simon vs. Ellen.
Ouch.
Tbf, that's probably why the produces picked her.
22Ellen has no music experience, some of you say.....like people actually took Paula Abdul's music seriously? Paula had maybe 3 big songs and was known for her dancing, NOT her singing ability or songwriting skills. Even Simon crapped on her music all the time! Ellen is an entertainer who has had a much more successful career than Paula. No one ever took Paula's commetns seriously because they never made sense. Everyone loved Paula because you never knew what was going to come out of her mouth and she was always good for a laugh. At least Ellen will be coherent and have something to offer on the stage presence/overall performance aspect. Who knows how this will work out, but I am looking forward to seeing it unfold!
23I'm nervous...I wasn't a fan of her on SYTYCD. Tried too hard to be funny and seemed very uncomfortable providing criticism about something she doesn't know anything about. If she is more relaxed and doesn't try hard to be the comedian of the group, I think she'll be okay.
24I love Ellen and she was always really involved with Idol on her show but I thought when she was a judge on SYTYCD that she talked too much- rambled and kept making funnies etc. If she keeps it short and sweet and isn't afraid to be critical at times I think she will be good.
25I heard about this last night, and I have to say I disagree with this wholeheartedly. I love Ellen as a comedian and a host, but she will not add anything of value to the critiques and this will take up even more time from the contestants. She is also too much of a nice person to tell a person they suck.
26LOL audreystar, i also thought this was april fools
27what does ellen know about music? i love her and her show as a comedian and host (like others have said) but this isn't the right fit for her...it doesn't make sense
this is NOT a comedy show....this will not be good
All I know is, the minute I heard this I instantly told myself I was going to be watching again. That's all that the network is going to care about is if it gets more viewers, which I'm certain it will. Now, whether they stick on through the next season after, remains to be seen. I think Ellen is an excellent choice. Sure, she doesn't have music industry experience, but do any of us that sit home and act the judge as we watch? The beauty of the show is that we are all judges, because we're the ones who actually cast the votes in the end. I think it's cool to have someone like Ellen who, like us, is a huge fan and will bring "our" perspective to the panel.
