300 director Zack Snyder's next project is Watchmen, an adaptation of the 1980s comic book series by Alan Moore. For many weeks there have been rumors going around about who, exactly, we'd be watching in Watchmen (Keanu Reeves? Jude Law?) and now that the cast has been finalized, I am even more excited for this project. Patrick Wilson! Billy Crudup! Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who I love! This is fantastic. Variety has details:
"Watchmen" has taken decades to get off the ground. Based on Alan Moore's 1980s comicbook series, the adaptation will be set in an alternate 1985 with plenty of Cold War overtones.
Crudup will play the fatalistic Dr. Manhattan, a role Keanu Reeves once eyed, while Wilson will portray Night Owl, a rich kid interested in birds. Morgan has been cast as the Comedian, a Vietnam vet who's a member of the Minutemen. [Jackie Earle] Haley and [Malin] Akerman round out the cast as Rorschach, a vigilante, and Silk Spectre, the key femme role.
Malin Akerman is the lone female so far who gets to hang out with all the boys after her Ben Stiller comedy The Heartbreak Kid opens this fall. Lucky lady.

Great cast, especially Jeffrey Dean Morgan!
1Gerard Butler was going to be in this, but apparently had to pull out and be replaced by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Jeffrey may be okay, but I'll miss Gerry!!
2nikkih i also thought Gerald would be taking this one, but i guess not. i don't mind jeffrey in the role though.
3I've heard that Gerard may still have a minor role, but guess that's probably to be decided later...I thought he was up for the Night Owl role, now apparently played by Patrick Wilson (who I think was in Phantom of the Opera with him), but who knows--lots of minds get changed this early in the production process! Still keeping my fingers crossed that Gerry will show up one way or another
4One can only hope that Gerry will turn up in this movie somehow. Even if he doesn't, we'll still get our fix when "300" comes out on DVD Tuesday!!
5This movie is pretty much the only thing that will keep the Vancouver film industry alive until febuary, so I love it.
6I just don't know what to think of this project. The source material is so nuanced and carefully presented that pulling off a movie that'll do it justice will be very hard to do.
Are they going to try to give the movie a comic book appearance? It just won't seem like The Watchmen w/ out absurd amounts of maroon, yellow, and black.
