Wow. In my poll last Friday I wondered if the No. 1 movie at the box office this weekend would be Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix or Hairspray, and here we are on Monday with I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry smiling at us from the top of the list. The movie was critically panned (and even annoyed Molly), but apparently Adam Sandler has enough fans to float a pretty mediocre-sounding movie. Or maybe all the Harry Potter fans were just home reading the newest book!

The top three movies were close in sales, however, with Chuck and Larry and Harry Potter only about $2 million apart. In third place was Hairspray with $27.8 million, the most any musical movie has ever grossed in its opening weekend. At No. 4 was Transformers, staying strong with a cool $20 million, followed by Ratatouille at No. 5, raking in $11 million in its third weekend.
As for this weekend, I'm extremely excited to see The Simpsons Movie, so check out my review this Friday. For now, watch the trailer again and then see if you can get "Spider-Pig" out of your head.

Chuck and Larry? Seriously?? Man, there are a ton of people out there looking for a refund this morning....
1Didn't see it, but would probably rent it...even if it is horrible...
2I would agree that the reason that Harry Potter (movie) didn't get more viewers was because they were all wrapped up in Harry Potter (book).
3Hairspray is fun. But Chuck and Larry??? Not even sure that I'll rent this one.
4very suprising..
5are you serious? this is such a joke.
6wow i wouldnt have been surprised if hairspray beat our harry potter but seriously!? chuck and larry!?
being a harry p[otter fan, i am utterly amazed, but i guess it was cause we were all reading.
That's craziness and not what I expected. Just proves Sandler fans are pretty dedicated.
7I'm so happy that hairspray did not make number one.
8It's a sad commentary in today's time when movies like Chuck and Larry get to sit on top while great movies with great acting in it, such as Fracture and Zodiac, gets little viewing. *sigh*
9At least it wasn't Hairspray.
10The bad comedies always top the box office!
11I was hoping Harry Potter would come in at #1, but obviously everyone was reading the book!
I read about this yesterday, then threw up....and then called and yelled at people. true story. haha
This shouldn't have happened
12I know that the preview showcased it as being a movie that incorporated the silly slapstick of, say, Happy Gilmore as well as the (comparatively) more thoughtful wit of Knocked Up, but it sounds like that was just good marketing. I'm not surprised that it had a great weekend, although I must admit that I thought that Harry Potter wouldn't wear out its welcome so quickly.
13hmm. very disappointing.
