Noah Baumbach is the young director whose indie film The Squid and the Whale (starring Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney) was weirdly fascinating. Embracing the look and feel of Brooklyn in the 1980s, it was a difficult family drama that often made me laugh or feel uncomfortable (or, at times, accomplished both those things at the same time). Baumbach's latest venture, Margot at the Wedding, appears to have precisely the same style and feeling as Squid, and again deals with strained familial relationships.
Nicole Kidman plays Margot whose sister Pauline (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is marrying the slightly schlubby Malcolm (Jack Black, curiously trying his hand at a dramatic role). Margot, clearly not enjoying a smooth relationship with her sister, has some reservations about this union.
Margot at the Wedding opens October 19. To see the trailer (in which Kidman is back to her beautiful redheaded self), read more

I am very excited about this movie. Wouldn't be surprised to see a nomination or two from it, depending on the box office and buzz.
1I love Nicole in movies like this. She was enthralling in Fur. I can't wait to see Jack Black.
2YAY Nicole back as a redhead. Have yet to see FUR but I need to see Birth first. I heard that movie was creepy. Have you see it that one Buzz?
3Okay just seen the trailer, hahaha. And I want to see this one. The sond in the end just made it perfect and there is something so endearing about this movie. Oscar noms better there in around January/February.
4Hmmm, I'm intrigued by this trailer. Maybe I'll see this.
5Too damn exciting. If it's anything like The Squid and the Whale it will be kind of great.
6Nicole is great in these roles. Though I was disappointed in Jennifer Jason Leigh when I saw her two years ago in a New York off-Broadway production, I think she and Nicole seem as though they work well together in the film. Looking forward to seeing this one.
7This does look interesting. Jack Black played an un-funny role in The Holiday and pulled it off okay so he should be fine her. Jennifer Jason Leigh annoys me as an actress because she seems to speak by keeping her teeth together.
8i like both of those actresses a lot so i am looking forward to this one.
9this looks really good..i really love nicole kidman when i see her in a movie...and jack black i think is way better than people give him credit for. everytime i hear about this movie, the critic says 'what is jack black doing here?' *sigh*
10A couple of things:
Release date is mid November, not October 19 (i think it's 11/16)
Have you guys seen any other Noah Baumbach movies? Pre-"Squid and the Whale?" They are FUNNY! Funny and Dark. And it's interesting because they kind of follow Baumbach's life:
Kicking and Screaming (not the Will Farrell one) is an end-of-college set movie. Very funny and poignant.
Highball-this one is like young adulthood following the same group of friends three different times of the year. one for a b-day party of one of the charachters, one for a halloween party, and one for a new years party. It's funny how all of their relationships change over the course of the movie.
Mr. Jealousy - another young adult movie. also very funny. stars Eric Stolz
I recommend them all
