If you were fond of Hasbro's Transformers action figures and have been dying to watch Industrial Light and Magic use CGI to make them come to life on screen, ignore the following review. Ditto if you love insanely loud (and inanely plotted) action movies. But if you need character development and a coherent story, read this and then — run. Run as if a giant robot that was just moments ago a boom-box is chasing you down the street. Otherwise you’ll be stuck, as I was, in two hours and twenty minutes of hell. Transformers, I’m sorry to say, sucked hard.

First, there's the story. Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is your average horny eleventh-grader who wants two things more than anything: a car and the hot chick, Mikaela, played by second coming of Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox. He gets his car, a mysterious and rusty old yellow Camaro, and pretty soon, with its help, he gets the girl, too. The car, it turns out, is an Autobot he calls Bumblebee, one of the good guys of an alien robot race that has come to earth to find an important cube called “Allspark” that holds all power (don’t ask) and to keep it from the bad guy alien robots, the Decepticons, who want to use the cube’s power to destroy the earth. There's more to this robot alien tale, though, so read more
Why is this epic alien robot battle raging around this nobody hormonal teen? Because unbeknownst to Sam, the glasses he has been trying to sell on eBay that belonged to his great-great grandfather somehow have imprinted on them the map of the cube’s whereabouts. So, the Decepticons go online to search for the glasses. One of Transformers' saving graces is its consistent sense of humor. In one of its funnier scenes, the Decepticon Barricade, after changing from a black cop car into an imposing and gigantic robot, shouts in his booming bass voice to a bewildered Sam, “Are you LadiesMan 217?!” (referring to his eBay screen name).
But no matter how funny (and it’s not that funny) Transformers is, or how cool the transforming robots are (and trust me, after the bazillionth time one of them transforms, you will be utterly indifferent), these elements cannot change the fact that the film is organized around endless robot chase scenes and battles that just become one big CGI blur. Forget the subplot about the war in Qatar which begins the film with actors like Josh Duhamel as a soldier and John Voight as Defense Secretary, or the subplot about two hackers who try to catch the wily Decepticons, or the subplot with John Turturro and the secret government agency that’s been hiding the cube. These scenes simply drag this already interminable film into seeming infinity.
But some die-hard fans are easier to please. As I left the theatre, I heard a man say on his cell phone, "That was tight! Robots were bouncing off of buildings, man!” To him, nearly two and a half hours of that was awesome. I still demand that action movies have some kind of engaging plot and character.

I was raised with three brothers. I can go for a action-packed character/plot-lacked movie once in awhile (followed closely by a chick flick). I'm still going to see it!! Excited for Independence Day. Thanks for the review, at least I'm know what I'm in for (shutting down mind and common sense for giant robots!!!!)
1i watched it as a kid and so did my hubby. it sounds a little silly, but it's based on a CARTOON!!! i'm still excited to see it this weekend.
2Oh this was better than air headed fluff called chick flicks, movies that take themselves way too seriously and those freaking torture movies and comedy that is not funny anymore. It was totally cool. It's not an Oscar contender but it's good light hearted fun, don't expect anything magical just expect some humour and extreme special effects!!! I have to disagree with Buzz this round this movie was waaaaaaaaaaaaay cool!!!
3i kind of figured this movie would be bad, just because they were promoting it waaaay to much. But i wasn't expecting it to be fantastic we just want to see action and all the special effects. oh well! i'll still check it out
4I get what you are saying Buzz, however does anyone who actually wants things like character development go see Transformers? LOL
For what it was, the movie was great.
5Love Shia as I do, I'm not seeing this movie. I didn't see Disturbia either, if I don't see Surf's Up I won't be invited to any more parties.
6The movie seems true to its form. Those who like action and special effects will be delighted; for them, 2.5 hours really probably isn't enough. Think I'll pass on this one, though.
7Is it me or do you have no desire to see this movie? Maybe a rental...
8Thanks for the review. I'll be watching with popcorn and low expectations so I think that will help. I'll get my character and plot development from The Bourne Ultimatum in a couple months.
9I'm not seeing this movie til next week but maybe I'll like it more since my expectations arent too high anymore? heh.
10Megan Fox - the second coming of Angelina Jolie!?!?! How can you say that, Buzz!? Angelina is one of the best actresses of this century! Megan Fox is a wannabe! Ahhhhh.
ANYWAY, Glad I got that off my chest, haha.
I can't believe ebay was implemented in this movie- and part of the plot nonetheless. This wasn't (and now surely isn't) on my 'to see list.' Thanks for the honest (if a bit brutal) review. I agree that anyone bouncing up and down to see this isn't expecting much of a storyline or coherent plot to begin with but for a fun summer movie, it might suit some.
11Others reviewers have not been so fond of this movie. One even compare Bay's new movie to the old Transformer movie with Orson Welles; he made me want to rent the original movie more than see the new Transformer.
Also Buzz it's a Michael Bay movie, director of The Island and Armageddon, not exactly known for directing movies with great writing, just explosion and more explosion.
12Interesting synopsis. I'm sure that I'll see it eventually with my husband - whether in theatres or on DVD. Everyone needs a good action packed kick-ass movie sometimes and I am not a chick flick kinda girl!
13Yes, I'm aware it's Michael Bay's direction and one can't expect much from that, but I'd hoped that the writing would be better than it was. I also held out some hope that Spielberg would have had some positive influence on the movie. But alas.
14UCH god I would never see this, it looked awful. And now BuzzSugar has confirmed my thoughts.
15I agree with you Buzz. You would think for being such a big director he is, Michael Bay would branch out a little bit from his typical movie and direct a movie with substance.
16Sorry that you didn't like it, but the theatre that i was in was a riot. Everyone loved the film. Lots of humour and action. Yes, it's stupid, but whatever. All I expect out of a summer blockbuster is to be entertained and I was extremely entertained. Spiderman and Pirates both sucked really bad, and I was finally relieved to see a summer blockbuster live up to its hype.
According to the test showings, all people from every age group to both men and women liked the movie equally, so it's not just a geek film for sure. It's a Michael Bay film, so with that in mind, just sit back, relax and enjoy it.
And I thought the characters were definitely engaging. Shia was awesome in it. You can't tell me that cheesy scene where he's trying to get with the megan fox character wasn't a riot. This movie is great. And this is coming from someone who loved movies like Syriana and Half Nelson.
17Oh Lord...
18Oh well...I am still going to see it today. Sometimes it's good to see a movie that requires no thought...
19Transformers was good summer movie fun. It was so much more than can be expected from Michael Bay. Seriously the premise is Giant robots that turn into cars to protect earth from evil robots. It is based on a toy line!!!! What did you expect? Good summer fun for the Holiday week to forget the real world! Shai is great and I am looking forward to the next Indiana Jones with him cast! Here is my advice, don't take a summer block buster so seriously! Go, enjoy, and have fun!
20Pud i agree with you anyone who expects good writing in a movie about alien robots with names like optimus prime????? is pushing their luck and which action movie ever had good writing, that's why it's an action movie not a drama or documentary. Michael Bay is big cos his movies have made money. I think if you like good writing you mught as well stay away fromt he theatres this summer. Generally it seems lkike the people in the theatres in my city have loved very minute of it. It's light hearted people, it's not trying toleave a message lol.

22I'd rather spend my 10.50 on....on.... well, I really can't come up with anything witty to say here, but really, you get the point. Not that I don't love me a Summer "Blockbuster" every now and again, but this just doesn't appeal to me in the slightest - and I watched Transformers when I was a kid!!
23Another lame, overused CGI installment for Michael Bay. Yeah, sometimes it is cool to see a "no brainer" but movies are supposed to have a plot, storyline and character development. Thats the point. Its not really a movie if you only have people speaking words, cars turning into robots and things blowing up, now is it? Yes, its based off of a toy and a cartoon, but to some people that cartoon was a big part of their lives growing up and the least M.Bay could do is make it worthwhile. It could have been an amazing movie, but now all anyone is saying is: "its a no brainer" or "what do you expect from Michael Bay?" It coulda been great, kids.
24it's trasnformers!!! I expect somehting like that from them. I saw the cartoon... I wasn't expecting a good writing or acting... but I am going to see it! (for the same reason I keep watching Air force one and Armageedoon... I don't know why)
25I am not that lame, I like good movies, I just buy The Shawshank Redemption and Dead Poets Society and make my mom and brother see them. way cool... still there's a maniac geek inside of me so I will see transformers
26I loved it - but was prepared that it was a plot-less action CGI flick. Isn't that the point of this movie anyway? If you got something different out of the trailer I want to know which one you were watching - I missed it.
I watched Transformers as a kid and now love it as an adult. the comedic timing of Shia was AWESOME. The robots had a simple, naive nature to them that made you love them. There were some classic lines from the cartoon, great comedic lines taking digs at American culture today and it paid homage to the original series and movie.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but mine is that this movie was GREAT!!
27Transformers was great! Shia was awesome in it and kept me in stitches. The cartoon was a great part of my life when I was younger (being surrounded by a bunch of boys in my family) but honestly, to make Transformers with more character development and a deeper plot would've ruined the fun. To those who criticize it without having seen it, I say it's MORE than meets the eye.
28Just saw the movie a few hours ago. It followed the original story line pretty well. I thought it was great entertainment. I never once felt like I had been in the movies forever. It was a blast. Its just a simple action packed movie. For those who canned it were probably 40 when the show originally came out, so they are the lame-o's. I would watch it again in the theaters is one of my friends wants to see it (thats a huge thing since the last movie I saw in theaters was pans labyrinth) I LOVED it.
29I loved it! I never even watched the cartoons and this was way better than all of the trilogies I've seen this summer (Pirates, Shrek, & Spiderman)! It was effin' awesome.
30i really don't think i'll be seeing this movie, maybe when it comes out on DVD?
oh and Megan Fox being the second coming of Angelina Jolie? Blasphemy! Megan Fox is desperately trying to be an actress- well one that has more to her than her odd looks. She will never be Angie.
31Noooo! Damn it! This is what I feared with Michael Bay. I hoped Spielberg could salvage it, but if it doesn't even check off as a good, mindless action flick, then there's no point.
32it seems that most people who watched it enjoyed it.
33the movie was okay, too much action for my liking but some parts were pretty funny.
34I agree with Lovestoned!
I loooved the movie! Better than Spiderman, Fantastic Four and even Pirates! Best movie of 2007 so far!
35I saw it today and really enjoyed it. *shrug*
36I have to agree...I think most of the problem lies in the director-good old Michael Bay-who tends to ruin potential movies time and again. The movie was dissapointing...the plot was choppy and suspenseful at best. If they hadn't caset Shia as one of the main characters, I would have been upset, but the kid has so much potential. Any movie that portrays Anthony Andreson eating a box of doughnuts as their comical relief-needs some serious help. Does anyone ever wish they had final cut in a summer blockbuster...*cough* x-men 3 *cough*
37Transformers roll out!
38Good review Buzz. Basically what I expected. This is what I expect of all big blockbuster computer generated epic action movies, lol. As for Spielburg, look what he did to War of the Worlds?! Blech.
39No 1 movie in Europe woohoo.
40I saw it last night with my boyfriend, our roommate, and my bf's dad who is in town. I have to say, the movie was alright-cheesy CHEESY plot, but the special effects were good and the humor made up for the cheesy plot. BUt the three guys? Oh they LOVED IT! my boyfriend thinks that it was the greatest movie he has ever seen and that he has been waiting to see them turn his favorite childhood cartoon into an awesome movie. The car ride home was hilarious because they couldn't stop talking about how great it was!
41I have to disagree with Buzz on this one, as some of you have already. I went in with low expectations and having not grown up with the cartoon in my childhood. But my boyfriend, who is a little bit older than me, has..and he has been excited for this movie to come out for over a month now (if not longer!) So having gone in with the right mindset, not expecting a strong plot and what not, I definitely enjoyed it for what it was worth and I actually really loved it because of that!
It was way funnier than I thought it was going to be and the effects were super kewl. I'm not one to normally go for movies like this, but it was truly enjoyable!
Everyone in my theatre clapped at the end, including the other women
It's what we
need in the summer - just a fun action packed movie
42I'm steering clear of this. The minute I saw that Michael Bay directed it I turned the other way and ran for my life
43i didn't plan to watch it, maybe I'll rent it on DVD.
44I'd also disagree with this review. Mainly because, unlike many of this CGI adventure movies, this movies knows exactly what it is and who its audience is. When the second big producer flashes on screen as "Hasbro" you have to know that you are not going to watch a character-driven film. And most definatly better and more fun than all the other superhero flix out this summer.
45I agree with those that have disagreed with the review. I thought it was done well for what it was. I chuckled at the all the product placement stuff...ebay, panasonic, gmc, mountain dew and the slightly corny, silliness of it all. We've seen it twice since Monday. My husband loves it and will probably see it yet again. Both times the theaters were packed and there were claps, laughs and cheers through the whole thing and everyone seemed to really love it.
46I absolutely loved this movie. If you're looking for in-depth plot and character development, I'm not entirely sure what compelled you to see this movie in the first place! I have absolutely no interest in the toys; I've seen the original cartoon movie but only at my husband's insistence. However, I was really enthralled with the movie and I can't wait to see it on the giant screen next!
47I have to say that I do not agree with Buzz on this one. I thought this movie did everything that a Great summer blockbuster should and when I heard the little kids around saying "wow" out loud, I knew it was a GREAT movie. It is LOUD, but it was like a roller coaster on the movie screen. It was GREAT and I recommend that everyone see this in the theater. It just wont' be the same at home on the couch.
48I did go see it and I really liked it for what it was. An action packed treat with lots of CGI eye candy. I actually thought the story was decent considering that it was about robots from a different planet fighting on Earth. Groundbreaking it's not, but who was expecting that anyway?
49I saw it yesterday and loved it! Is it Shakespeare? Hell no. But it was fun. It was a lot of fun, at least for myself, my husband, and our friends. None of us went into it expecting more from the plot than to just get the characters from point A to point B, but then we can find plot holes in most everything. The point of the movie was the robots. The fights, the transformations, etc. It honestly didn't feel like a long movie, and I was shocked to look at my watch afterwards and see it had been 2 and a half hours.
50That said, everyone has their own opinions of what is good and what is not, and I can definitely see how some people would be totally not interested in it. But if you can go into a movie just wanting to be entertained, and wanting visual spectacle, some humor, and some great action, definitely give this a try.
