I would love to write wonderful things about License to Wed. I wish I had things to say about the comedic timing, the brilliant acting and the warm fuzzy feeling you get from just the right amount of cheesiness in the ending. These would be the makings of a great romantic comedy, which unfortunately, License to Wed just isn't.

From the moment the movie begins, the story is rushed. The first few minutes give us a montage showing how our leading characters meet each other, fall in love and are catapulted into the hellacious chain of events that is License to Wed. John Krasinski and Mandy Moore are Ben and Sadie, the adorably average couple who find themselves trying to gain a minister’s approval with their big day just 3 weeks away. In order to get their marriage license, Reverend Frank (the obnoxious and cringe-worthy Robin Williams) puts the couple through trials that are supposed to test their compatibility and their ability to act as responsible parents and spouses. These pose problems for the couple, of course so read more
Of course, as anyone can predict, Ben’s patience is tested more than anything else. Since it was Sadie’s wish to be married by Reverend Frank, she sees nothing wrong with his absurd antics, which range from prohibiting the couple from having sex to leaving two hideous robotic babies in their care. I begrudgingly accepted this behavior from Teri Polo in Meet the Parents but coming from Sadie, it is virtually unforgivable. Not only does she candidly discuss her sex life with the Reverend while Ben watches with incredible embarrassment, but she agrees to drive her car blindfolded as a means to test her communication skills with Ben, with no reservations whatsoever. There were about 50 things in License to Wed that were pretty inconceivable, but that one takes the cake for sure.

The movie does have aspects that could have been developed a little more for the greater good. The supporting cast, which includes Christine Taylor and a handful of John's quirky co-stars from The Office are very funny, but their on-screen time is little more than teasing cameos that leave us wanting more.
As bad as this movie is, there is a glimmer of hope which can be found in Mandy and John. While there are no surprises in the way Ben and Sadie seem to mirror John and Mandy’s personalities, the characters compliment each other in a way that is at times delightful. They are both so likable and exude that air of being a couple that you want to root for. Unfortunately, my affinity for the couple only made it that much more frustrating when they were overshadowed by Robin Williams and his ridiculousness. It is refreshing to see a fairly new pair of actors on the screen, but it is wasted on a movie that never really takes off.

I thought this movie might actually be pretty good, but I've heard from a few people that it's just blah. I wish Mandy would do a good movie (even though I did like 'Because I Said So').
1That's disappointing, I was really hoping this would be a decent/cute movie!
2I'm not at all surprised. Every time I see a clip from this movie, I want to see it less and less.
WHY, John Krasinski, WHY?!?!
3Whip, totally agree. John, although I highly doubt you peruse through the stories and comments on the Sugar Network, here's a shout out in case you do: You're a leading character on a hit show. Sure, it won't last forever, so you're making a good move by trying to build a movie career. But making mediocre comedies is not the way to do it. Did you read this script before accepting the role? If you did, I hope that they paid you a ton of cash because your talent was truly wasted in this film.
Rant's done. That's all.
4Loved the rant, Mainly Obsessed, and the review, Buzz. I was hoping for more, but expecting just this. Not sure I'll even rent this one. Thanks, Buzz.
5I hope was hoping the movie would of gotten a good review. It seems a little cheesy but I still thought maybe it would of been a cute movie.
6Since this is just your opinion, and I don't normally take the critic's word for it when they say a movie is bad...I'm going to see it anyways. I especially didn't like what you had to say about Robin Williams. Obnoxious and cringe-worthy? I don't think so. If Robin Williams hadn't been in this movie, I probably wouldn't have been interested to see it. The only good movies I've seen Mandy Moore in was Because I Said So and How to Deal. Other than that, her movies always seem to be mediocre..and I haven't seen The Office so I don't have anything to say about John.
7It DOES seem like John keeps playing himself. From the Office to License to Wed...he's got the Lauren Graham syndrome! maybe Leatherheads will be different?
8Hmmmm, i dont know, but all the clips i saw of it...it really didnt seem that funny or exciting
9That's upsetting to hear! I so hoped this would be a good movie!
10It looks cute, but some how I have a feeling I can already predict what happens (hint: it'll be just like every other romantic comedy ever made).
11i have no desire to see this movie. gaaaah!
12I think Robin Williams has just become too much of a loose cannon in comedy anymore.
13ah robin williams. i am so sick of him!
14I ended up seeing the movie despite all the bad reviews I had ready. I think I went in expecting the worse, because at the end, I didn't really think it was as bad as people made it out to be. Just be prepared for cheesiness and moments that are more awkward than funny.
15It's disappointing to see this movie getting so many bad reviews... Sigh. Mandy Moore, please do a good movie soon!
16"Even Stevie Wonder can see that Robin Williams isn't funny" haha I can't remember where I heard that, but it was one of the funnier things I've heard involving that terrifyingly hairy man.
17Haha wow...that's from 2005, I don't know how I remembered that...but its still pretty hilarious

Bummer. This movie looked like it had some good potential, and John and Mandy make a super cute on-screen couple. It does seem like Williams is a bit over the top in this one, though. Maybe I'll rent it.
19I'm still going to watch it. :stubborn: I love John and Mandy and I was really hoping this would be great...
20I kind of liked this movie. I agree that Sadie was hard to sympathize with, but as my sister pointed out that was a key element in her revelation at the end. At any rate, the only thing that would keep me from watching this again was the animatronic twins. I had to cover my eyes every time they were on screen, they were the most terrifying thing I've ever seen.
21i watched an early screening of this movie, it's not just cheesy, but just kinda LAME!
22dude, i could have told you from the previews that this movie would suck. robin williams is annoying. i do like john though, maybe if i'm really, really, really bored one night when it comes on hbo i'll check it out. maybe.
23Robin Williams-- ugh!
24I could tell from the preview that Robin Williams would just be too "big" for this one. I was really hoping it would be better though, for John's sake. At least he's got that football movie with Clooney coming up!
25I knew it wouldn't be very good...but I wish it were! I love John.
26If you're in the mood for something light and funny, I would recommend this. I went into the movie just wanting a cute romantic comedy and I left satisfied.
Also, the cameos from "the office" cast members got huge laughs in the theatre I was at, and I liked them as well.
John and Mandy are super cute IMO.
27u hit it on the nose buzz, i saw it this weekend and was soooo disappointed. You are so right with that it was completely rushed in the begining, it almost felt like we were watching the trailers and how it was over the top cheesy. I mean i'm all for romantic comedies, but the ending was just bad.
28the best part was John taking care of the fake babies and the bloopers at the end of the film.
To be honest, John, Mandy, and even Robin did the best they could with that script. I don't mind Robin and I actually believed that he was a bit toned down. Mandy was fine, too. John as well. However, for the life of me, I couldn't see why exactly Ben loved Sadie and Sadie loved Ben. I think that's why you really couldn't root for them to pass the course. Also, the editing was really bad since they cut out the entire storyline of Carlisle having a crush on Sadie which made Ben's outburst at the rehearsal completely out of place. The ending was completely cheesy, too.
