Some TV shows have fans. Others have fanatics. They dissect every moment of the series, learn to speak Klingon, even send tons of nuts to the network when they hear their show is in danger. Those are the cult shows, and TV Guide has just released its updated list of the top 30 cult shows of all time.

It's a broad list, spanning comedy ("Absolutely Fabulous"), drama ("Freaks and Geeks") and sci fi ("Star Trek," unsurprisingly taking the No. 1 spot). I always think of "cult" shows as being low-rated and obsessed over by only a very small group, but the TV Guide list takes a broader definition, putting "Lost" and "The Simpsons" on the list. At first, I was taken aback — can a cult show also be one of the most popular shows on TV? — but then I thought about all the "Lost" backwards scenes I've watched and all the times I've been stuck in a car with people who only speak in "Simpsons" quotes, and I decided they deserved their spots.
But on the other hand, there were some pretty surprising exclusions. I think "The Office" has all the hallmarks of a cult show: It's low-rated, but you'd never know it from the way its fans obsess over it, and I think having a convention automatically qualifies a show as cult-like. "My So-Called Life," which made the first list three years ago, has apparently "not withstood the test of time" — though given the reaction to the news of a DVD release, I bet some of you would beg to differ. "Arrested Development" has a particularly devoted, die-hard fan base that continues to mourn the show long after its cancellation — words that could also apply to "The State" and "Kids in the Hall."

Pretty much all of the ones I thought of were on the list. Notice how many are Sc-Fi shows!
However, the shows with the craziest fanbase really are the soaps. There are people who have watched Days of Our Lives EVERY weekday since they were a kid. That is dedication.
1I agree, Arrested Development should be on this list. I saw a movie trailer for "The Kingdom" this weekend, and when I saw his face, I yelped, "No touching!" So, um, yes, I'm a little into the show.
2eh, the list doesn't seem to have any structure. They got a lot of deserving shows on there, but the list is in such haphazard order. Buffy and Farscape beating out Monty Python?!? And Arrested Development being omitted?! Jericho over Battlestar Galactica?! *adjusts glasses* Pheh
3I loooved Freaks and Geeks. I was so sad when it was canceled.
4buffy should definitely be higher than x-files
5In looking over the list again and paying attention to the order I have to agree with most of the comments above. Jericho seems to be pretty high on there. And I agree that Arrested Development should be on the list. It should also still be on tv, but I guess that battle is lost...
6I would have guessed the Simpsons to be higher.
7I figured Star Trek would be #1. I've never watched it but it seems like a huge cult!
8That list has it all wrong, and doesn't the show need to be underappreciated in it's time then really popular months or years later in order to be a "cult hit"? If so, wtf is LOST doing there?
So here's mine:
The Adventures of Pete and Pete, from the 60 second shorts, to the half-hour specials, to the 3 amazing seasons of weird, wonderful, mysterious, and imaginative children's programming.
To this day it is my favorite show, it was so cool back then, and now that i know who all their guest stars actually are, it's an even cooler hipster thing now.
Iggy Pop as a part of the International Adult Conspiracy, how could that not be awesome?
9I'm a big fan of Star Trek and The X Files! I'm a huge geek apparently, but I'm happy today!
10Boy Meets World should be on there. People still watch it today.
11Buffy is my favorite though.
What about Seinfeld?
12As for a Mike Groening show ( creator of the simpsons), I would think Futurama would be the cult hit not the Simpsons. I guess my definition of a cult hit is different from TV Guide's, but then again TV Guide is a mainstream publication so I think they would pick shows that many people watch/like or is in the mainstream culture. Now if we got a magazine like Geek, Nylon or something, we would have a different list.
Just my take.
13STRANGERS WITH CANDY!!!!!!! I'm quite pleased that it made the list.
I like your Arrested Development comment too, Buzz.
14What about the great J.J. Abrams' pre-Lost shows: Felicity (my all-time favorite TV show) and Alias?!?!
He should get some recognition for specializing in cult TV shows!
15Arrested D for sure! Also Weeds.
16What about Dallas and Six Feet Under?
17Saved by the Bell!!!!
18i agree with laimar: what about alias? alias had some of the most dedicated/obsessed/borderline crazy fans of any show.
19Ab fab is great!! really popular in england..my mum LOVEs it!! i prefer LOST and buffy is GREAT too!!
20X-Files will always be my favorite show- I think it deserves to be where it is
I'm
really glad to see Firefly on this list, now if only we could get another movie...
21Also, I absolutely agree witht those above who mentioned the glaring omission of Arrested Development. And as much as I love Family Guy, how can you include that and not South Park?
Good list.
22you guys are right- Felicity, Alias, Six Feet Under definitely had a unique following. Strange list.
23Arrested Development for sure...nothign beats that show!!!
24Yay, Firefly is on the list!!
25Alias should be on there.
I do agree with Twin Peaks (I was obsessed with the Laura Palmer diary - although, I never watched the show, saw the movie though) and Strangers With Candy (love this show).
26When I saw the headline, I immediately thought of "Freaks and Geeks." God, I loved that show. So sad when it was cancelled.
27I get that Star Trek made #1. I can see why. But I have to say, Buffy should #2!!!
28OMG, I LOVE AbFab!! I was always a Trekkie, too! Beauty and the Beast, Battlestar Gallactica .... Twin Peaks ... There's a lot of good ones on that list. I agree not totally complete though. CSI ... Alias ... China Beach ... there's a few more that should be on there, too.
29He he... I remember Xena!
30I hate Star Treck!! The only shows I like on that list are Veronica Mars, Buffy, Family Guy & The Simpsons!
31I think this is a pretty good list. Almost all the shows I ever watched obsessively are on it, with the exception of Alias.
32Definitely LOST is the biggest tv phenomenon of all times...
33I really miss "Dead Like Me".
34Arrested Development def needs to be on this list -- see my avatar.
"Go back from whence you came!"
35Seinfeld and friends should be there too...but i love the simpson
36What about Soap?? They had a gay before anyone!!!
37Friends, Gilmore Girls, Soprano's, Sex in the City
38arrested development, boy meets world...and firefly which is on the list, deservedly so.
39arrested development, boy meets world...and firefly which is on the list, deservedly so.
40arrested development. we call ourselves DevHeads.
41my list would look like this:
(only first 10. )
1. STAR TREK - The CULT and the way of living
I am a Trekkie
)
422. DYNASTY/DALAS (Biggest Soap operas of all times and the role model for other shows)
3. Monty Pyton's FC (More than a cult)
4. Alo-ALo - (guess this is our Euro-Cult
5. Only fools and horses - (again European cult)
6. Dr House - (It's new but it is becoming a cult)
7. Sex and the city - (there are girls that still imitate the way of life those 4 had)
8. Melrose place/Beverly Hills - Teen soaps that everybody watched
9. Sesame Street/Mupet show - (children's cult)
10. Teletubies/Pokemon (controversy love/hate children's shows)
ohhh i loved buffy. such amazing writing and acting...i have the whole series on dvd..lol im such a dork...but i love smg
43Buffy at #3 is fine by me! I might just have low standards but that's pretty good. On some lists it doesn't even make it that high.
I'm so easy to please lol.
44I'm a big fan of Lost and mathew fox
45I just have to geek out and say that we obsessed AD fans call ourselves Devotees, par Ron Howard's narration in the season 3 episode "Fakin' it." Howard speaks of Michael's on stage litigation in the school play "The Trial of Captain Hook" which first appeared on the season 2 episode "Altar Egos." *adjusts glasses*
46I agree brunettefury, I'm just glad it's on there. But obviously it should be number 1!
47BUFFY! Yeah it should be #2. Buffy rocks ...."spuffy forever!"
48spock!
49Buffy on 3rd place!!! i agree. it could be even higher!
