I have a love/hate relationship with Robin Williams' movies. In films like Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society, he brings a certain brilliant sincerity to his roles, which I admire and find so entertaining to watch. On the other hand, I've come to dread his over-the-top, cringe-worthy antics in cheesy comedies like License to Wed.

I'm happy to report that Williams's role in the upcoming movie World's Greatest Dad falls into the category of performances I think I can get behind. Williams stars as Lance Clayton, teacher of poetry, aspiring writer, and father of a typically bratty teenager. At first, Lance seems like a dad who has given up trying to connect to his son, but as the trailer goes on we see that Lance has his own brand of snark and retorts for his son's wisecracks. Eventually, a freak accident leads to Lance's big break, and he owes all of his success to his relationship with his son. The movie looks darkly funny if not a bit sad, but I'm definitely interested in seeing if Williams shines as well in the film as he does in the preview. World's Greatest Dad opens Aug. 21 and to check it out, read more.

Haha, isn't that the kid from 'Spy Kids'??
1I love Robin Williams, I'll definitely be seeing this movie.
2I too have that love/hate relationship with Robin Williams movies. Think this is one that I'll love. Thanks, Buzz.
3Buzz, I was just talking about this with my dad - he hates Robin Williams and I was offering to him how excellent Williams is when he's not being himself. I think exactly what you said; that he is so talented and touching when he plays sweet, complex, dramatic characters like in Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets and Good Morning Vietnam (even Jack and Patch Adams). but what makes many people forget about all the good stuff is movies like License to Wed, RV, Mrs. Doutfire, etc (uggh, makes me cringe just at the thought).
4this looks pretty good; it has a good story and the characters seem well written...
The trailer just doesnt make me wanna see it. I actually stopped the trailer 1 minute in...
5Saw this at Sundance. It was an excellent performance by Robin in an otherwise so-so film.
6I rented it comcast on-demand for $10. I am very dissapointed Robin Williams would do such an awful movie. It is annoying to me because bobcat had Williams character make choices in the end that his character would not have but was done for 'shock-value'. A friend & I are dumber human beings after seeing this movie.
