If I were Betty Suarez, I'd be pretty sick of braces after more than two years, and according to some dentists, those braces would be off by now for sure. In fact, some specialists are claiming that Ugly Betty gives a "detrimental" portrayal of wire braces because Betty hasn't had her braces removed yet, and because the braces supposedly make her "unattractive." Tracey Posner, of the British Orthodontic society, has stated:
It is irresponsible of the programme makers to portray Betty as "ugly" because she wears prominent braces. Ugly Betty is in its third year on our TV screens and Betty remains in over-exaggerated, heavy "train-track" braces. This is not a true reflection of orthodontic practice. It is highly unlikely an adult would wear braces beyond two years. Betty's braces are certainly intended to be seen by viewers as damaging to her appearance. People who wear braces are not ugly. People considering treatment should not be put off by such a stereotype.
I'm not convinced that there are scads of people resisting getting braces simply because Betty Suarez wears them, but I guess I can see the orthodontists' concern. I do think it's high time Betty's braces come off, though (and some say the braces removal is coming soon), just because it seems to make sense at this point.
Beyond the braces, however, I'm not sure I want Betty to have a more thorough makeover. Do you think Betty should ever get a complete makeover?

I don't think betty should get a make over a la "Devil Wear's Prada". I think her fashion sense is evolving, even though it's not "fashionable" in the world she lives in, but she is taking risks and strides with it in her "Betty" way, so I think the next best thing would be to get those braces off because seriously, its about time. Maybe in a year or to, she'll decide to get rid of the bangs or get a layered cut, who knows.

3She works at a fashion magazine and has terrible fashion. Her hair is always a blowdryed disaster. And she has braces. It's not that the world thinks she's ugly, just the people around her on the show.. and they still like her.
I do think the braces should come off though. I had braces at 20 and never felt ugly. And neither does Betty.
Get those braces off! God, they are irritating to look at after 3 years.
4Definitely lose the braces. And maybe Hilda could give her a good trim.
5I think the idea behind the series is that over time, she becomes more beautiful or what society accepts as beauty. In the novella she eventually falls in love with her boss and he loves her back.
I think she should lose them but keep her unique wardrobe.

7Braces don't make someone unattractive, but most people get them when their teenagers. Actually, now I think kids are getting them even younger. The point is that no one wants to be an adult with braces. Anyway, this english version is a far cry from the telenovela so I wouldn't think this is going to follow it.
8I think they should come off. My problem with this is Betty does not even look like herself anymore. AF has lost a good amount of weight, her gaining that weight back WILL NEVER happen so maybe a mini makeover is needed.

I had braces for four and a half years so it is not that unheard of for about three years. My poor sister had them for almost 6. We had some missing adult teeth and misplaced ones.
10liz -- I'm so sorry, that must not have been fun. I had them for just under two years and couldn't wait to get them off. Betty should definitely ditch them already. Her clothes make her look more anyway.
11Lose the braces. It is a bit tiring to see them on for so long. To have the braces off would help give Betty a slight update. I would not want to see a total makeover though; it would ruin the point of the character. However Betty's hair could use a deep conditioning treatment & a few layers. Maybe tweeze just a few more stands her eyebrow(s).
12i have seen plenty of moments where it would make sense for betty's braces to come off in order for her to move on to another stage in her life.
13There was a lady at my church back home that had braces for FOREVER, so I can buy that Betty has them still. It's not like she's sporting headgear...
Considering I had a bridge, braces twice, headgear, rubber bands, and currently have a permanet AND standard retainer, I've actually never given her braces much thought until this post.

16They should come off. There are loads of teenagers out there whose self esteem is being damaged because they think that their braces make them ugly, and this is aggravated by characters such as Ugly Betty.
17Look, if you read up and did yur research before putting these articles up you'd know that betty's braces aren't real. they're a plastic covering that's made to fit over her teeth whilst filming. Abit like a gumshield. So yes if it was real like me- she'd have her braces of in two years
but they're not so...
