Wow!
The cast for Peter Jackson's film version of The Lovely Bones is shaping up beautifully: Ryan Gosling has just been added to the cast, joining the recently added Rachel Weisz.
Variety says:
"Based on Alice Sebold's novel, storyline revolves around a young girl who has been murdered and watches over her family — and killer — from heaven. Girl must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal. Gosling will play the girl's father; Weisz plays the mother."
Wow!
Peter Jackson, Rachel Weisz and now Ryan Gosling? Sure, Gosling seems a little on the young side (ahem, 26) to have a 14-year-old daughter, but that's forgivable. I am anxiously waiting to find out who they cast as Susie. Who could do that role justice?

I hope, I hope, I hope this turns out well. I read the book twice I loved it so much.
1I LOVE this book....I read it last summer, and I still think about it, it's so haunting.....I hope this movie turns out well, I'm interested to see it on film
2I really loved this book, so I hope it turns out well. I guess, he can look a tad older than 26, and Rachel Weisz can look a tad younger than her 36 to look like an appropriately matched married couple.
3Wow. I love Ryan but if he messes up my favourite book ever, I mite just never forgive him!
4oooh, I am reading that now- couldn't put it down the other night. Love it so far and sounds like the movie is being set up well- Peter Jackson, Ryan and Rachel- not bad!
5he does gut wrenching emotion very well, lol. also cute. i'm looking forward to this movie but i bet it will be difficult to watch. i cried through much of the book. i hope the part of the girl goes to someone not "known", that would be distracting to me (jmho).
6ok this is like my second favorite book.
7i feel like ryan wont be able to do a good job playign the father, can this really be true? is he really going to be playing a dad of 3 kids? it cant be right.
im getting worried, and i really hope Peter Jackson doesn't butched The Lovely Bones. books nto movies never turn out right.
love the book and hope the film would accurately portray the characters in the book.
8Please GOD not Dakota Fanning. She's just to gosh-shucks-gee Disney for that part. Or maybe it's just that I can't stand her. Abagail Breslin is probably too young for the part. Aimee Teegarden, possibly (Julie Taylor on Friday Night Lights). It's got to be a tough role to cast, because the whole story hinges on a character who's young but can pull off some really tough scenes.
9Maybe Dakota's little sister Elle, or Abigail could definitely pull off 14.. Who the heck else is there?
I'm pumped for Ryan and Rachel.. can't wait.
10the book is so great
11im thinking dakota fanning for susie, shes so talented and can definitly bring susie to life
i love this book, i'm very interested to see how the movie turns out.
12those two in it definitely make me want to see the film!
13Mm... wonderful!
14I read this book when I was in high school (I think I was 16, not much older than Susie) and I loved it. Alice Seabold is a genius! I think Susie is going to be a really hard role to cast, and I have to agree with the few who said NOT Dakota Fanning. It's too dark for her.
15Who will Ryan play? If he's playing Dad, then thats going to be a stange pairing. But I will watch it, I love Ryan. Interesting, book, not sure how this will translate on-screen.
16Meh, am I the only one who really did not care for this book?
17Love that book, so sad. Ryan is an awesome actor I'm sure he'll be great. Mark my words they'll most likely change the girl's age to younger.
18I am absolutely with Suziryder, I really do not think Dakota would suit this part. I hope they choose an unknown like they did for the golden compass. Afterall this cast already has the star power to draw moviegoers.
19Ryan is a great actor, of course he will do the role justice. He is a bit young, but I love him so much. Cant wait.
20He is SO sexy!
21Expecially in The Notebook!!!!
One of my fav's.!

I wasn't totally crazy for this book but it's going to be interesting seeing it on film. Peter Jackson is a genius so I'm sure he's going to deliver. Gosling is great too so, even though he might be a little young for the part, I've got hope for him too. I don't care much for Weisz.
23I'm intrigued by the casting but I hope Peter Jackson does not screw it up (long story) anyway, I was flipping through US weekly and you know who would be good... Lindsay Lohan's sister. She is not as well known as Abigal or Dakota and she is supposed to be a actress. Also she is around 14, I think. With the seriousness of the book I do not think they would cast an unknown but with ya never know.
24I agree, this is one of my favorite books and i will not be happy if this movie does not do it justice!
25I love Ryan Gosling! And Rachel Weisz. A very strong beginning. If anyone saw the movie "Bee Season" about the young girl in spelling bees with Richard Gere and Juliet Binoche...she was fantastic and would be a great option for the girl role.
26Her name is: Flora Cross...
She's my pick!
This book just depressed me. I never want to read it again and I can't imagine sitting thruogh the agony of the movie. It was a wrenching story with no release. Not for me. Even the "Color Purple" had redemption..
27I think the girl who plays Hermione in Harry Potter (emma watson?). Or it would be great if they went with an unknown - this could be some girls dream come true! Other than the sick sadness of the whole book.
28I read this book a few years ago and I also read Lucky (her memoir). I hope this movie does the book justice!
29This is one of my favorite books. I'm not going to lie, Ryan Gosling as the father makes me worried. He's really just not old enough and doesn't look old enough to play the father of a 14 yr old girl. I hope he proves me wrong!
30I am so excited for this movie! The Lovely Bones is one of my favorite books. I think Ryan will be great in the movie, love him!! I can't wait to see who plays Susie...I kinda think Dakota Fanning would be great.
31I am reading the book right now and love every bit of it. I am soo happy that they cast Ryan. He is one of the great young actors right now and he is soo hot
A little suprised that he is cast as the dad but im not going to complain
32If they choose Dakota F. as Susie, I'll never forgive Hollyweird.
33i just get more and more excited about this movie every time you post a new cast member!! i loved this book. i hope they cast someone totally unknown as susie who turns out to be fantastic. i agree that it should NOT be dakota fanning.
34god I love him! However the oldest I would say he could pull off is like 32 and that's even pushing it for a 14 year old daughter. Dakota Fanning is definitely the best choice for Susie. She's a great actress and those scenes are going to be heart wrenching.
35well i read that book a while back and loved, it still makes me teary eyed just thinking about it. so far the casting is weird to me and until we hear who the girl will be i am really undecided about the choices. as far as peter jackson goes, with the LOTR and king kong (to my knowledgeof his works) he must have had great ideas on how to do the project.
36I love this book, I hope the movie is good.
I don't think Susie will have a very big part, mostly voiceover right? and then just flashbacks?? I imagine she'll be like Mary Alice on Desp. Housewives.
37How about Abigail Breslin? It needs an anna paquin type (Fly away home)
38I'll be heartbroken if I hear Dakota's wispy voice in this movie. Susie needs REAL heart to her character. Dakota's great at her craft; I'm not doubting it. But this isn't for her.
39I didn't like it either Cestlavie. I was beginning to think I was alone in my opinion!
40Ryan Gosling seems a bit too young for the role, but you never know.
Also, to answer the other question... Saoirse Ronan has been cast as Susie.
41I'm a big Ryan Gosling fan, but I think he's way to young for this role.
