If you're one of the many fans who has already purchased tickets to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, then you may have spent the weekend watching the first five films in the series — or at least your favorite of the bunch. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the fourth book (and casting Robert Pattinson in the film version didn't hurt), but if I had to choose my most-loved movie, it would be Alfonso Cuarón's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It was slightly darker than Chris Columbus's first two, and, for me, much more magical than the two that followed. Do you agree or do you prefer another?

Order of the Phoenix so far. I'm so excited to see the new one!
1Usually whichever one I saw last
. I got sucked into the ABC Family marathon this
weekend and saw parts of all of them.
2Agreed Buzz Sugar! My favorite movie was Azkaban, but my favorite book was Goblet of Fire.
Although I do have a special place in my heart for the films with Cedric Diggory in them...
3mine was azkaban too, but i hear the sixth is pretty rad, as since the sixth book is my favorite it might become my fav movie too
4Order of the Pheonix. It was tense and I loved it the book too. But really I just keep hoping that they'll keep getting better, I'm really excited for the 7th though.
5Even though I have been watching the movies for years, I just decided to read the books and my fave so far is the half blood prince, still have to read deathly hallows.
6My fave movie was Goblet of Fire.
Oooh...I can't even decide, I like them all...I really like the later ones...I'm so excited about the new one!
7Prisoner of Azkaban, hands down is my favorite book and movie from the HP series.
8Azkaban. it was my favorite book of the series and the most beautifully filmed movie.
9Azkaban is my favorite movie and book, my second favorite book is half-blood, and I'm hoping the movie won't dissapoint!!!!!
10Order of the Phoenix. Sirius is my favorite after Fred, so I was happy with how it handled his death. But I did not like the book very much.
I also like Sorcerer's Stone cause they're all so cute and young!
11The goblet of fire is my personal favorite movie and it helps that Rob was in it too! Can't wait for the new one!
12The Goblet of Fire has been my favorite movie so far. My favorite book is the Half Blood Prince and I hope the movie is just as amazing.
13the first one! only because i adored the original dumbledore.
14definitely azkaban as well. I also watched the abc family marathon. i always loove watching the part when hermione and harry go back in time and watch themselves...so magical and cool.
15I liked Goblet of Fire, and I'm soooo excited about FINALLY getting to see Half-Blood Prince!
16I can't even decide, I like them all me too...
17Hum... my fave movie was Goblet of Fire!
I already saw Half-Blood Prince and I was sorely disappointed. They gloss over a lot of things and the ending wasn't as poignant as it was in the book. Plus, the whole Horcrux-in-the-Inferi-filled-lake scene left much to be desired. Probably my least favorite of the movies so far. I just hope they can do Deathly Hallows justice with the 2-movie gimmick.
18I love them all!
19I love them all!
@tchemp: I agree that the movies gloss over crucial aspects to the books. That's why I treat them as separate entities. The books are the books and the movies are the movies. In my mind they just share similar characters. This way, it makes them both entertaining!
20I absolutely loved the third book but hated the film, I also didn't like the fifth film. My favourite is the fourth.
21I think I am alone is saying that Azkaban was my least favorite Potter film. I know that the book is darker than the two previous but the level of darkness in the film was so jarringly different from the two previous films that it was hard for me to cope with.
22Tiny things bugged me, like the fact that it seemed that the director took a lot of artistic freedom in recreating Hogwarts. I never understood why the the fat lady, who is known to wear pink, suddenly appeared in a toga. Or why her picture was moved to the great staircase, when the entrace to Gryffendor was supposed to have been kept secret from members of other houses.
And it bugged me that things that seemed important were left out, like when the director neglected to incorporate the significance of Harry's patronus being a stag and thereby his connection to his dead father and the fact that his father, Sirius and Pettigrew all became an animagi illegally to help Remus with his little wolfy problem. That seemed to me to be an important aspect of the book because it brought Harry closer to his father but for some reason the five minutes it would have taken to explain that and tie it all together were apparently too long.
On the other hand, the director managed to fit in a frog-choir scene that, while definitely cool, didn't even appear in the book. I would have happily sacrificed the frogs to see Harry feel closer to the parents he lost as I feel that is significantly more important to the overall story.
AMEN, Acid Pops! The connections in the story that made Prisoner one of the best (if not the top) books in the series, was NEVER translated to screen. For me, it was a true disappointment all the way!
23I can't decide... I love them all, they're so good! But i'm so excited to see the new one,the book is amazing!
24so i've never read any books and have never seen the movies....until this last rainy saturday thanks to abc family.....i totally got sucked in. i'm going to start the books this weekend.
25I love Azkaban. I was sort of the artsy Potter movie. I know there were some small changes to the sets and there were things left out, but for me it captured the mood of the book better than the other films. Unlike some of the later films, he did not sacrifice important scenes to add in his own ideas. That's why I hated Order of the Phoenix. The script was rubbish, the director made some poor choices, and WB restricting the time just ruined. I mean how did they expect to fit the longest book into such a short amount of time?
26I felt that Azkaban left out some exposition that can easily be obtained from the book. It made it move faster and game more space for some amazing scenes. I think it was a movie for the fans and less of a movie for people who had not read the book.
I enjoyed them all. I appreciate the later ones as they get more adult. I think that true Harry Potter fans who love the books will always feel disappointed by the movies, because key things will always be left out.
With that said, I can't wait until tomorrow to see the movie.
27My favorite movie is definitely the Prisoner of Azkaban and it's definitely because of Gary Oldman!
I too got sucked into the ABC Family marathon this weekend and then finished it off with my the Order of the Phoenix DVD...yes, I do have the other 4 on DVD as well, LOL
Excited for The Half-Blood Prince
28Prisoner of Azkaban. It was so artistic and physically beautiful. Cuaron is a visionary. And it introduced my favorite HP character- Sirius Black.
29Prisoner of Azkaban--2 words why: Gary Oldman. Worst one: Chamber of Secrets; I'm sorry I just hate Jinny's character in the books and movies... I know I'm up for disappointment when she becomes Harry's love interest, which I still think is bizarre.
30I like Chamber, and Pheonix.. My least fav was Prisoner, which is surprisingly winning!
31My favorite was Prisoner of Azkaban. As someone who had only seen the movies, i think it is by far the best. With Order of the Phoenix second.
32Prisoner of Azkaban is definitely my favorite movie because it had a slightly darker tone (but none of the characters were killed) and it introduced my favorite Harry Potter character, Sirius Black, who was played by one of my favorite actors - Gary Oldman. Prisoner of Azkaban is also my favorite book in the series, and Alfonso Cuaron is a brilliant director, so of course I would love it
My second favorite movie would be Order of the Phoenix, although I wasn't happy that that they cut out a lot of the action in the Department of Mysteries. Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange was inspired casting though, and I liked that they included more about Harry and Sirius' relationship than they did in the books.
33Tough choice between Azkaban and Goblet. Order of the Phoenix was easily the worst.
34I think Azkaban and Goblet also benefit from having been adapted from the best books in the series as well.
Movie-plot-wise, I think I liked Sorceror's Stone the best simply because I like introductory movies in a series the best. Finding out about the characters, if it's well done, is one of the most fascinating things for me.
Movie-scene-wise, either Goblet or Order of the Phoenix was the best, hands down. Even though I think I might be alone in this forum, most of the people I've talked to and know in my area hated Azkaban. I know I did. It just wasn't put together in a fluid motion, and the whole entire story really could have been a subplot in another book. I didn't like it. The special effects in Goblet and Order of the Phoenix were much better than the previous ones (wasn't there a different director for 4 and 5?), and the plotlines were more vivid.
Book-wise, I think Deathly Hollows was the best. I like reading resolutions...and it actually had almost NOTHING to do with being at Hogwarts while still having a big focus on scenes there, which is kind of cool.
35I totally agree with the things you pointed out Acid Pops; the parts left out really bothered me because they are the epitome of the thoughtfulness and dimension Rowling writes with, but I still enjoy the movie.
I have to approach the books and movies separately and try my best to tease out why certain changes are made rather than just railing against them all on principle. I have yet to figure out why not explaining who Prongs, Padfoot, Moony and Wormtail were/are and the link between Harry and his father via the stag patronus was in the best interest of the movie.
I love any of the movies with Sirius and Bellatrix because, as has been mentioned, Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter are phenomenal! I would give anything to spend time with the adult actors in all of the movies actually! Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith and Jim Broadbent are some of my all time favorite actors and the characters are so great!
36I'll always love the first movie. The Prisoner of Azkaban is actually my least favorite.
37I don't really have a favorite movie because the books are so much better (I love the seventh) I like the first one, though, and I tried to watch the fourth one the weekend but couldn't because Robert Pattinson bothers me so much.
38I think Azkaban was my favourite too. Although, I loved the effects in Goblet of Fire. I can also hands down say Chamber of Secrets was the worst film in the series thus far.
39I definitely liked Prisoner of Azkaban the best, but that's also my favorite book of the series.
40Loved Azkaban... the setting and music was fantastic. It really set a great mood for the more seriousness of the series. Favorite book, though, is Order of the Phoenix.
41Ahhh I can't agree with y'all on Gary Oldman!!! I do not like him as Sirius at all!!!
My problem with Gary Oldman is that, to me, Sirius was HOT, all the girls wanted him, the guys wanted to be him. And James and Lily were 21, maybe 22, when Harry was born, which would have put them in their mid-to-late 30's when Harry is at Hogwarts. And to me, Sirius is still supposed to be HOT....even all those years in Azkaban couldn't get rid of the hottness. And Gary Oldman just doesn't do it for me.
42I liked them all. The 3rd one was good in the since that it changed things up a bit. After that the kids were more grown up. More like in the books.
I got my tickets today and I am going to the midnight showing. I can't wait.
43defenitely goblet of fire, cedric diggory's in it, are you kidding me?
44mguy414 - I completely agree with you about Gary Oldman being a little too old to play the character of Sirius Black, my friends and I all thought it was odd that they picked an actor who was about a decade older than the character he was playing. On the other hand, I think he pulled off the character quite well and I think he's attractive for an older man
But I understand that not everyone has the same taste.
I am more irritated with the casting of Remus Lupin and Albus Dumbledore. David Thewlis doesn't have the wild and rugged attractiveness I thought Lupin would have, and Richard Harris seemed too old to play Dumbledore (R.I.P.) and Michael Gambon seems too angry at times (although I blame the writers more for that because they write his lines). Everyone else is perfectly cast though, which is amazing for a movie with such a huge ensemble.
45there should be an option for "all movies". it's hard to choose since they are all good and my fave in their own right. probably GOF and OOTP thus far... but i think HB-P will be the best one yet.
46Californiagirl: Oh I think Gary Oldman did a lovely job with the acting part of being Sirius Black, as far as his personality goes and all that. I can definitely see him on a flying motorcycle! And he did grow on me a little in Order of the Phoenix.
I feel the same way about Alan Rickman playing Snape. I always thought Snape would be moderately attractive, just kind of dirty and greasy, and Rickman doesn't do that for me either. But his sarcasm and dry wit are PERFECT for Snape, and I think that acting wise, they couldn't have gotten anyone better for Snape. But again, Snape is supposed to be mid-30's and Alan Rickman isn't, and while he is a great actor, it just kind of takes me out of the moment when I watch the movies.
I also agree that, for the most part, everyone else is perfectly cast. Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix? Um, amazing. She makes me want to be an insane Voldemort follower.
And, in OOTP, as far as the Ministry of Magic part goes, I also didn't like that they cut so much out that seemed really vital in the book. But I loved how the Ministry looked, with Fudge's big brother-esque flag hanging down, and when Voldemort did the glass thing and it just ripped through everything...then again where was the alive magical fountain to save Harry?!
Sorry, I could talk about Harry Potter for hours!
47Yeah Prisoner of Azkaban .. it was just so much fun. Goblet of Fire would be next for me ... Order of Phoenix I didn't like very much, I don't know what it is about it ...
48Goblet of Fire was the worst one. I was cringed at several scene's in it. The first two were ok, but a tad boring. I for one like the set changes in PoA. I thought that they were closer to the book. The only exception being the location of the fat lady. They first two movies made it seem like hogwarts was on the coast. the third one showed more of the surrounding area. the fifth was ok, but i hated the look of the ministry and the overuse of special effects. the newest one was really good up until the cave. they totally ruined the drama and suspense of that scene. Also dumbledores death was nowhere near as dramatic as it should have been. Another thing, ginny had a major part of the 6th book, but hardly gets any lines here. she was also alot cooler and prettier in the book. Third Movie Rocked! wish they could have explained who made the map though. i blame the writer for that. the directing was perfect.
49My favorite HP movies are:
1. Chamber of Secrets: I'm sorry but this is just a movie I loved from my childhood it was great
2. Goblet of Fire: I thought it had the most action I really liked it
3. Prisoner of Azkaban: It was a great movie but falls short of the other two.
4. Sorcerer's Stone: A classic and a good movie
5. Order of the Phoenix: Didn't really like it. It was my least favorite book too.
6. Half Blood Prince: David Yates completely screwed up this movie. There's too many things to list.
