Based on Susanne Bier's 2004 film and directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father), Brothers tells the story of a young man (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who "comforts his older brother's wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan." The older brother is played by Tobey Maguire and the wife is played by Natalie Portman, and from the looks of the trailer, the wife ends up getting very close with her brother-in-law, which causes some tension when her husband returns home from war.
For whatever reason, I have a hard time buying Portman as a mother of two but otherwise the movie looks intense and heart-wrenching. Brothers opens Dec. 4 and you can check out the trailer for it if you read more.

This looks really good, can't wait till it comes out.
1the danish film this is based on was wonderful and sad. i am happy to see that at least based on the trailer, it looks like they stayed true to it, probably due to jim sheridan
2This looks so good. Of course it's opens in December. Such Oscar bait.
3I wish studios wouldn't release trailers so early. There's 5 months to go before this hit theatres. And of course add a few more months to that for those of us in Europe.
4I can most definitely see Natalie Portman playing a mother, especially after "Where the Heart Is".
This looks great.
5I have been waiting for this to come out for a while now!
It looks good!
And Tobey and Jake look like brothers with those baby-blue puppy-dog eyes!
6Looking forward to this. I liked the trailer and if there's Natalie in it it's definetly a must see. It reminds me a little of the triangle among Affleck, Hartnett and Beckinsale in Pearl Harbor, but I think this one will be better.
7The Danish original is excellent. I'm always a little wary of remakes and the casting seems a little odd but having Jim Sheridan adapt it seems hopeful.
8I don't know, maybe it's just because I've seen the original a few times, but I still think the actors (and I like all three of them) are too young for the parts, especially Natalie Portman. Also, Jack Gyllenhaal doesn't come across as intense as Nikolaj Lie Kaas did in the original, but that might just be the trailer.
9omg, i can't wait. this looks really really good.
10I think the actors look too young for the parts, too. Especially Natalie, though maybe I just think she looks too "glamourous" for this kind of role. She's beautiful, obviously but they should have tried harder to make her look a little worn on the edges, like a young mom would.
I really wanted to like the trailer for this. I thought it seemed a little overly-dramatic and over-wrought. The plot did give me flashbacks to the Edge of Love with Keira Knightley (which was actually a very good film and more subtle in its delivery).
11I'm definitely not buying Natalie Portman as the married mother of two. It looks good though, I'll have to check out the original!
Side-note: I love "Bad" so so so much.
12Tobey seems to be the only one who fits in the casting.
13YIKES! Looks pretty powerful I'm definitely going to see it. I think Natalie's really talented and while I don't condone cheating I could understand a forbidden attraction to someone who looks like JG.
14With the disclaimer of she didn't really cheat.
15Looking forward to seeing this. Great cast.
16Wow! I wish they didn't release trailers so far in advance- I want to see this NOW!
17woah, this looks really good. you know, I can't really see Natalie as a mom of two either, but I think I can get past it since the intensity will distract from that fact (then again, there are actual mothers of two that I still can;t believe - Nicole Richie, etc.). Tobey Maguire looks really good; although I hate when they make it seem like all people who go to war automatically come back crazy or traumatized (believe me; Hollywood does it on purpose). but the whole premise is fantastic and different...
18this looks intense!
19So happy that Toby will be in a non-Spiderman movie!
20Looks promising! I just don't know if I'll be in drama mode come Christmas shopping time
21Not a Tobey fan, but I may have to check this one out. LOVE Natalie, though...
22I think the movie would be less interesting if he weren't traumatized after coming home. That's why they do it, for conflict and therefore interest.
23i love that NP always takes really different roles and i can't wait to see the whole movie. it's just a shame that we have to wait like 6 months to see it!
24If you look at the vast majority of the ages of our soldiers fighting overseas you wouldn't say they looked too young...I think they got the ages pretty spot-on honestly.
25That looks really good. Can't believe Natalie is playing a mom now.
26looks good. i like that they chose "bad" to play over the trailer.
27hello. can somebody tell me what´s the music in the teaser befor u2´s bad? i know the song but i can´t remember. it´s something with : don´t let me go. Please help me
28Wow - this looks amazing.
29the "don't let me go" song is Never Say Never by The Fray. (:
30This looks amazing! I can't wait to see it. Love all the actors...
