Not long ago I watched Rocket Science for a second time and was struck all over again by how superbly Reece Thompson (pictured, right) captures the whole Awkward Teen thing. In Assassination of a High School President, he's at it again — though this time his character is ever so slightly cooler and more self-assured than Rocket Science's Hal. In Assassination he plays a sophomore high school student who finds himself teaming up with an unlikely friend, popular girl Francesca Fachini (Mischa Barton), to solve a case of stolen SAT exams. Then, "once the duo target their suspects, a larger conspiracy is unearthed." Bruce Willis plays the school's tough-guy principal.
The movie was well-received at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and was directed by relative newcomer Brett Simon. No release info is available just yet, but even if it goes straight to DVD I'm going to check out this weird little high school movie. To see a trailer, read more.

it seems like the light, comedy version of "brick"
1haha, first of all, the part where he runs over the dog (I know; sad; but his reaction) is hilarious! I don't know' I like the concept; it's definitely different and fresh, but it looks poorly written and the acting (even Bruce) looks really bad. I like the main guy, but he't not great. and why does Mischa keep getting work?! seriously, not be mean, but who did she sleep with? all in all, I might rent it, but I have low expectations...
2Looks kind of cute. But, meh...
3At 23 Mischa can get away with playing a high schooler, but really, she was the breakout star of the O.C, she should move on to adult roles.
4I'm sorry, this is supposed to be FUNNY?
5How can I get to see this movie - my daughter is in it. Waited for it to come out - never did (HELP)
6this movie is a awesome. As a light film noir it in no way is as heavy feeling as 2005's Brick, however it never takes itself that seriously. The young (except Willis and Barton) cast is excellent with the older folks (Barton and Willis) though not doing their best work, having fun and being convincing in their roles. Willis looks the whole time like he was having a blast, and Barton pulled off her role very convincingly, though one could argue that she could have done it different, this was how her role was written and she shows immense understanding of her role. If the production company had not folded, this movie would have gone to theaters and would have been a middle of the road end of summer movie. As it is, with more and more people discovering this every day and the word of mouth press it gets, it will easily be one of the sleeper hits of the season that develops a huge cult following. Expect a crappy sequel in the future that will not have Barton or Willis and will flop.
