It's becoming more common these days to take a popular TV show with a built-in fan base and develop it for the big screen. It worked well for Sex and the City, and some people think that it would be similarly successful for Gossip Girl. Even Leighton Meester says so: "A Gossip Girl movie could be compared to a Sex and the City-type of movie. I think that would be kind of hot."
Both stories are set around the lives of rich and fabulous Manhattanites, but Gossip Girl is so over-the-top outrageous sometimes, I have to wonder how they would up the ante for a longer, big-screen version.
Could you see Gossip Girl working on the big screen? Or is this a purely small-screen delight?

Perhaps first they should focus on trying to get more than 2 mil viewers a week...
1No way. This show isn't even that good, I don't understand how they could possibly conceive a movie. The only thing I like about this show is Chuck/Blair, the fashion, and the occasional snappy one-liners. But the writing and the storylines are ridiculous, recycled, and have no build-up.
That being said, the show does seem to be improving. But no, I could not see it as a movie.
2I loved this show season 1 but season 2 left a lot to be desired. I'd have to be loving the show in order to be excited about a movie version.
3Oh, and GG has nothing on SATC!
4Yea, La Tua, I gagged when Leighton compared GG to SATC. Does she seriously think her show is on par with the brilliant SATC (series not movie)?
5californiagirlx7 said exactly what I would have said...
6Never understood why Gossip Girl was going to get a spinoff show, let alone a movie, with its ratings... I enjoy it as a tv show, but I agree with the other comments, it's far from being movie-ready.
7Ehhhh....maybe....I love it as TV show, but I don't know that it would work well as a movie.
8GG was actually supposed to be a movie in the first place! If I remember correctly there was talk of Lindsay Lohan starring and people were pretty upset and thought it would ruin the books.

10well i love gossip girl and would definitely go and see a movie version!
11i think that it works as a show but not as a movie. it's really horrible when people start thinking about things like this - because you're taking it out of an environment that's really successful for it and it's just going to be bad if they really were to consider making a movie.
12I like the show, it's entertaining but no way near good enough for a movie.
13Why ruin something that's already good??
as much as i love gossip girl - no. SATC was different and worked well for a movie. but gg? no.
14Although I love the idea, it's way too soon to consider it.
15NO! The story lines are way too complicated to draw in new fans. Also what could possibly be the plot line of the movie? They'd either have to invent some new, trivial problem or solve an existing conflict that I'd rather see solved on the show.
16Nope, and mainly because the plot is all over the place. It's sort of funny to see storylines dropped from one episode to the other, but can you imagine trying to make sense out of a 2hour long film??
17Not now... maybe in the future.
18Really I love GG series but I can't help myself thinking it might be cancelled just because creators would have ruined it. There's a spin-off then no there's no spin off, now a movie? Why all this rush??? This show could really get better and better if its creators just focus on what makes a great tv show: reliable characters , great storylines and genuine quotes! GG has only 2 years old, CW need to stop the rush!
