A Little Place in the Wilderness — the sophomore album from
Memphis — was recorded in the dead of the Canadian winter. But somehow, the music makes the perfect soundtrack for long Summer days, when twilight still lingers at 9 p.m. Released this week, Wilderness is the sophomore album from the Vancouver duo of Chris Dumont and Torquil Campbell, who founded the Canadian group Stars and — weirdly — also guest-starred on "Sex and the City."
Calling to mind the Cocteau Twins and Mojave 3, Memphis's music is jazzy and hazy, with lots of brass and saxophones and slight country undertones. I particularly like the swingy pop song "I'll Do Whatever You Want," which reminds me a little bit of Belle and Sebastian. You can listen to the track and several others on the band's MySpace page. Let me know what you think.

It seems like the songs of the day are a little bit left of centre. I feel slightly ignorant cos I know very few of these guys.
1Where are their PR people? These guys are FANTASTIC. Very cool and mellow.
2Love Memphis! Their cover of Pet Shop Boys' "Love Comes Quickly" is mesmerizing, and they've got a song that will match just about every mood.
Mojave 3, Memphis, Peter, Bjorn & John? You, Buzz, have got excellent taste in music!
