To sparkle, or not to sparkle. That just may be the question when Catherine Hardwicke takes on some of William Shakespeare's most well-known material and makes it into a "modern-day supernatural thriller." The Twilight director is apparently teaming back up with Emile Hirsch (the two worked together on Lords of Dogtown) for this adaptation of Hamlet, which was initially Hirsch's idea. Here's more:
Hardwicke and screenwriter Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) are working feverishly to transport the drama to a small East Coast liberal arts college where Hamlet's father is the president. The story will begin with Hamlet (Hirsch) returning home for his father's funeral, only to learn that his uncle, who has taken over his father's post, is responsible for his father's murder.
At first, Hardwicke thought the idea was "scary and crazy," but now she's armed with some ideas on how to go about this project. I appreciate what Hardwicke did with Thirteen, it's just the "supernatural" part of this news that seems a little dicey after Twilight. What do you think?

It's not Hardwicke I'm worried about, it's Hirsch. I really want to like him, but I couldn't stand him in Into the Wild.
3I love Emile. Thirteen is great, Lords of Dogtown is just okay, Twilight is awful. This just seems like such a strange idea, though.
4Many, many complements to that Blingee skull. And for those who doubt Emile Hirsch, see his transcendent performance as Cleve Jones in Milk! Or any of the indies he made before Into the Wild! The kid is very, very talented and, looks-wise, is the perfect fit for a Hamlet type.
Concept wise, I've done a production of Hamlet on the Moon, so any terrestrially-based Hamlets work for me . . . providing they don't trim the script to be 1.5 hrs like the Almareyda version with Ethan Hawke. Hamlet really can't be any shorter than 2.5 hrs.
5i actually think that it could be really good. i hope that it comes to fruition and that it's well received. i know that sometimes people give catherine a hard rap but she's really talented!

7AWESOME. I think Hamlet can only benefit by getting his supernatural sparkle on. Besides, it's a supernatural play, what with the appearance of Hammy's father.
8can hardwicke just stop ruining franchises? she should just stick with her gritty, southern california stories. UGH I CAN'T STAND HER.
