As I've been watching the So You Think You Can Dance auditions — which end tonight! I can't believe how fast they powered through! — I can't stop comparing them to American Idol's similar audition episodes.
While bad singers often make me cringe, the bad dancers so far this season have been entertaining and awfully funny. I mean, when someone clearly can't do a back flip but attempts it in front of the judges anyway, it's a little sad . . . but I still chuckle. The tone-deaf cases the Idol producers drag in are enjoyable to watch sometimes, too, but they can also be hard on the ears and a little depressing.
On the positive side, though, I love watching the judges unearth great contenders for both shows. The good dancers reveal their skill almost instantly, and it's always great to see someone like Allison Iraheta show up with raw talent that can melt even Simon Cowell's cold little heart.
So I'm wondering: Would you rather watch the auditions on Idol or SYTYCD? (And which show's untalented auditioners do you think are more delusional?)

I went with SYTCD...bad dancers are not nearly as painful as bad singers. Plus, I think that (1) they show more good people and (2) the judges give better constructive comments. Also, I like that they rotate the 3rd judge.
1I like Idol tryouts much more for people who are less than talented. I do agree with Allyace though about the judges and the constructive comments on SYTYCD
2I agree with Allyance 100%. I love how they encourage people to try out the following season after brushing up their acts--and for that reason, I enjoy seeing the familiar faces and watching them grow from the previous year. And they absolutely DO show more talented people. Love how they highlight the TALENTED's stories--and not necessarily focusing on HOW bad someone is for 15 minutes like AI does.
3I like how they run this show in general. It's much more uplifting then Idol.
4Britain's Got Talent, so much variety in both good and bad!
5SYTCD. Lovelovelove.
6I love watching the good people dance on SYTYCD. I love watching the bad people sing on American Idol.
7I like AI better, but Dancing is fun too
8I just like that there aren't as many auditions and way less trainwrecks. I watch these shows because they are TALENT competitions--not HOW CAN I GET ON TV
9SYTYCD for sure! The competitors are generally a lot more skilled and talented than AI. I assume it's because most people recognize that dancing takes a lot of training, but everyone seems to think they can sing!
10AI focuses on the bad way too much. I prefer watching and being able to root for better performers from the beginning. This I think SYTYCD actually accomplishes.
11So You Think You Can Dance is better than AI in so many ways... AI is just a cheesy entertainment and has almost nothing to do with true talent. Often it's a matter of God given voice. And dancers in SYTYCD must have talent and work really hard to be great in what they do. I actually admire a lot of them. Also judges in this dance show are a bit smarter and are much more competent when it comes to dancing than AI judges when it comes to music. Finally, SYT.. is not as populistic as AI and at the same time it's more inspiring.
12SYTYCD - by far! i think that there's just something really impressive when you see a dancer that's amazing vs. hearing someone sing with a great voice. both are amazing talents but i'm more impressed by the dancers.
13Ew, neither. But if I had to choose, I'd watch SYTYCD.
14Hands down SYTYCD.
I only wish that Fox didn't make them do the cheesy group dance numbers and staged bs....
like last night's dance off between Sex and Leo???
Come on Fox, gross.
15SYYCD, for sure. but I'm biased, because I grew up dancing! I stopped watching idol after the 2nd season, the bad singers are too embarassing for me to watch.
16Great episode last night! My personal favorite was Nathan Trasoras. First off, I like the sudden, dramatic way he dances, and then I was so happy to see that he was dancing to “Pollen and Salt” by Daphne Loves Derby that he completely won me over.
17SYTYCD is so much better than AI. The girl with the lightsabers and the lion costume? Hilarious, but sad that she would think she would be taken seriously.
18Neither. Don't like any of those kind of shows.
19SYTYCD. I feel immense amounts of second embarrassment when I watch the AI tryouts.
20How long will we have to put up with that hasbeen Mary Murphy. It is a real shame that people who are no longer at the top of their game have to inject themselves into other peoples careers. She claims that by screaming she is saluting them, what a load of crap. All she wants is to be noticed. Lady you had your time, now shut up and disappear. You are as annoying as those grunters on the tennis circuit.
