With vampires all the rage these days, I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone started talking about bringing Buffy the Vampire Slayer back to the big screen. But I'm still surprised at the thought that this movie-turned-TV show could get a total reboot with all-new characters and no Joss Whedon.
Here's the deal: Original Buffy movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, have owned the rights to the Buffy story and characters since the beginning. They developed Whedon's movie script and helped him make the Buffy and Angel TV series. And now, they and Vertigo Entertainment are talking about a potential reboot or remake (but not prequel or sequel), as The Hollywood Reporter writes:
The new Buffy film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon. . . . One of the underlying ideas of Buffy allows Vertigo and Kuzui to do just that: that each generation has its own vampire slayer to protect it. The goal would be to make a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential.
The article notes that while the producers haven't ruled out Whedon's involvement, they also haven't approached him yet.
So, what'll it be, Buffy fans? Is a Buffy story without Xander and the rest really a Buffy worth seeing? Or do you believe there's potential for an entirely new Buffy world that could take on a life of its own?

No Scoobies. Meaning no Xander, no Willow, no Giles. NO SPIKE!! NO SPUFFY.
If they have to do it, I just wish that they'd do it RIGHT.
1Could Luke Perry be in it?
2If they set it in the past with a Slayer not named Buffy, it could work without trampling on Joss Whedon's masterpiece. Otherwise, leave it the hell alone.
3i'm with m5f6 - if it's pre- buffy existing i'm fine with it otherwise it'll trample on everything buffy built up to including the new comic series
4This wouldn't really be a Buffy movie, it would be a vampire slayer movie. If that's what really happens, then I'm fine with it.
5Why would they call it Buffy then. I'll watch it, but they should name it something else while still keeping it in the vampire slayer family.
6I'm a HUGE fan of the show and it's hard to imagine it sans Whedon but I agree w/ most that as long as its a vampire slayer movie (not buffy) then I would give it a chance, otherwise....eh.
7NO. If they want to do it about a new (or old) slayer in a different time, then maybe. But there will be a massive backlash if they mess with anything to do with the show.
8The original Buffy movie was cheesy, but I don't think it could survive now without Joss Whedon at the helm. He made Buffy and the Scoobies what they are.
Anything pre-Buffy would work, but remaking Buffy? Don't touch it. Or Angel.
9The series' premise lends itself to ability to remake it so I would be down. I love Buffy and the Scoobies, I just have a hard time imagining it without Whedon in it somehow.
10i hated the TV show but man I loved this movie back in the day. I say go for it
11NO NO NO! Okay I got that out of my system (well at least some of it) I agree with M5F6 that if they set it in the past without someone named Buffy it could be okay...
12But I don't like it... If it was a vanpire slayer movie WITH Joss I'd be dancing with joy - and to me it can't be Buffy without Sarah...
I completely agree, BabyNorbert.
13They are only looking to cash in on all the Twilight stuff, and wouldn't stay true to the story, so without Whedon it would be a complete and total failure. Any myths and ideas about slayers/vampires/mythical creatures, are all either Whedon's ideas, or endorsed by him. And these are the people who made that bad Buffy movie. No matter when it was set (not that it could really be set after Buffy/the show; unless it was centuries in the future), this movie would be wrong and fail without Whedon.
14I welcome any new/old Slayers to the Buffyverse, and have always thought it would be cool to see something about The Subway Slayer, prior to her nasty end by Spike. However, it looks like the Kazuis are looking to avoid any integrations with Whedon's mythology, and I don't really know how they're going to attempt to set something in the Buffyverse with a new slayer without making it integrate into the Whedon's 'verse.
15Whedon's fans will come out in droves against this movie- why not just make it a slayer film and not call it Buffy? I don't think that would bother anyone too much.
16I think it could be good, as long as they make it something completely separate and prior to the original Buffy. But then again, the first Buffy movie was really super cheesy, so you never know.
17I would see a Slayer movie, but why *wouldn't* they want Joss involved? He's a great director, and I like his style. Honestly he's pretty open to other people coming up with other Slayer stories if you've read any of the short story collections or comic books. Imagine the tag line: Into each generation a Slayer is born... and she wasn't always a cheerleader.
18i would def not see this movie without whedon. these are the ppl who made the first buffy movie so bad and made whedon want to leave the movie in the first place. and i dont think whedon fans will come out to see this movie. there is no buffy without angel or willow or xander or even dawn.
19ugh...i wouldn't watch it unless it was related to the series somehow. SMG is Buffy. but IF this does happen, i predict twilight will probably kick its a**....unfortunate, but true.
why can't someone start on the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles again? those books are much better than Twilight and i'm a Twilight fan!
20I really wish they would STOP remaking movies or extending them with the Part 1, 2, and 3 deals. Buffy the movie wasn't that great and the TV show was boring to me.
Once again this just goes to show that Hollywood has really gotten desperate. They need to try fresh new ideas for a change.
21Just because Vamps are in, doesn't mean you have to ruin the good ones.
22No no no-no no. No. NEVER without Joss. What part of 'it's his universe' does Hollywood NOT understand? Even with Joss, I'm leary of a reboot/remake.
A pre-Buffy Slayer would work, or something set deep in Season 8 that Buffy is not involved in.
23This is a bad idea. No Joss, no Sarah, no movie. Hollywood needs to leave things alone. Did they actually think this would be a good idea?
24No Joss, no Bella approval. Simple as that!
25GAHHHHHHHHHH!!
First of all: You CAN'T make a movie about a slayer from the Buffyverse without Joss Whedon!! He is the genius behind the whole story. He made the stories worth watching, worth caring about. And where did, "They developed Whedon's movie script and helped him make the Buffy and Angel TV series" come from?? Fran Rubel Kuzui butchered Whedon's Buffy. Kuzui ruined his screenplay by making it a ridiculously cheesey broad comedy with no emotions. For that alone she doesn't deserve to work on anything even remotely related to the Buffyverse. SHE WILL RUIN IT!! Mark my words, even if she tries to create a pre-Buffy slayer story, she WILL RUIN IT!! She just doesn't understand the story or what the story means to the fans.
SECONDLY: Everything Buffy as a show stands for, the metaphors, the dialogue, the reversal of gender roles, female empowerment and agency, everything that makes the show worth watching over and over again makes it so much more valuable than some shallowly written, ridiculous vampire love-story saga about a weak girl who has to be protected by a vampire (man) and only gains strength once he makes her his. And if Fran Rubel Kuzui wants to make a quick buck by exploiting the current Twilight fandom, I'm afraid that the end product will be another lackluster Buffy movie that will get trumped by some stupid glittering vampire. Seriously, how painful would it be to Buffy fans if our beloved Buffster got trounced in ticket sales by Edward Cullen!?!? It doesn't even bear contemplation.
FINALLY: You CAN'T make a BUFFY movie about BUFFY without SMG. She made the character someone amazing. The things we watched her go through were just magical. Additionally, I'm just not interested in a Slayer movie that doesn't involve any of the characters I love. What would be the point? As we fans know, no slayer before Buffy had a circle of friends so the story could basically only encompass two characters, a slayer and a watcher. Bored now.
26I dont know what to say about this. I dont agree with Fran and Kaz saying "they own the rights" to Buffy. Maybe they do technically but they know full well those characters and the whole mythology belongs to Joss and Joss alone.
I dont altogether have a problem with a different slayer within the Buffyverse set at a different time but without Joss it wont be the Buffyverse because thats all him.
I dont think a generic vampire slayer movie is a bad idea either (obviously i love vampire movies) but will it live up to Buffy? Of course not.
27NO to the Nth degree!! Buffyverse without Whedon is like the Earth without the Sun. Superman and Batman reboots were warranted...this one id being done for all the wrong reasons...it will fail big time!
I have seen the movie Buffy made by this Kuzui character and even if this "reboot" is set with another slayer before or long after (as in a millennium after terminators have ravaged the earth, but vampires have still persisted), she will butcher the slayer mythology!
Someone please send a terminator back in time to stop this...target - the Kuzuis!
28The first Buffy movie was really stupid, I'm sorry but it was so awful. The TV Series was amazing, I watched it religiously every week and when it ended I bought the series. If they did a follow up by Joss Whedon with SMG it could be worth watching but a second completely unrelated movie?! -that is just going to turn Buffy into a joke. I wouldn't go watch it -not even to see how much of a flop it will be.
29They are just trying to guarantee success by calling it "Buffy: the vampire slayer" so that they can make their money out of the Buffy fans, but I think they will be the last ones to go see it.
Maybe I'm the only person who actually liked the original buffy movie. It was super cheesy but it did have a soul of it's own in an early 90's teen movie sort of way. I also liked the TV show though I'll admit I'm not as crazed as some Buffy fans seems to be. I think it would be interesting to see yet another incarnation of this story. i mean good stories are up for mulitple tellign and can withstand many different visions. I thinkt hat the root of this story is strong and maybe they could even get BOTH Buffies to make appearances in the new film
30NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Kay, my opinion is noted.
31it just wouldn't be the same :/
32Are you serious. Do they care about their fan base at all?. They ruined the first Buffy movie and now they want to do a hatchet job to a new one? The orignal movie did not make people want more it was the t.v. series and I am a loyal fan. I would not for any reason watch this movie with the plan that is outlined so far.
33I'm totally on board. Buffy is an icon, and Icons were created to be reinvented as time goes on.
34She'll never be as legendary as Captain Kirk or Superman, if fans don't get the opportunity to become talented directors and writers and retell the story.
We'll always have the original series, the comic books, the original film, and now we could have-potentially-an even better film and possibly sequels. It'll be so much fun if they get it right!
I say go for it. I love the original movie and I love the series. A new movie focusing on a new slayer could be awesome people.
35they can do a vampire slayer movie but they should not name the character Buffy... Joss made her legendary... at the end of Buffy they had called all the potential slayers, so they should just use one of them as the basis... i will not view this with out Sarah as Buffy, nor without the scobbie gang if they decide to call it Buffy [without Sarah]
36wasnt a past buffy a;ready made tho? "Vanhelsing" ring a bell?
37it wouldnt be the same without the gang so i think it'd be better if it were a new slayer,
not called buffy tho..Maybe a Buffy origins movie but with buffie and the gang not in it.
The Buffy fans need to stop getting their panties all in a bunch. If this is gonna happen, it's gonna happen.
Personally, I'm intrigued.
