Every Summer boasts a ton of new movies — usually big blockbusters that are sure to bring in the mega-bucks. Last year we got some doozies (namely, The Dark Knight) and this year there are many as well (including a Harry Potter movie). Do you think the Summer of '09 has a more impressive movie offering than the Summer of '08 did? Check out some of last Summer's movies and some of this Summer's films.
Note: This is not a comprehensive list of movies that came out/are coming out. It's just a small roundup for reference.

I'm so excited for Harry Potter that I think it's making me biased
I think this year's movies as an ensemble will have more variety, but I just know that the Dark Knight will still be so much better than most of them. But I loved Star Trek, and I can't wait to see Transformers 2, Harry Potter, Funny People, Bruno, and maybe the GI Joe movie.
I think last year's movies were a bit better...Iron Man, Wall-E, The Dark Knight, and Tropic Thunder were all spectacular; Sex and the City, Pineapple Express, and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 were good too. The only movies coming out this summer that I really want to see are Harry Potter, Public Enemies, The Time Traveler's Wife, Up!, and Funny People. I've already seen Star Trek (really good) and Night at the Museum 2 (pretty good).
It's hard to say since summer movie season is just starting today, but if I had to pick I'd go with last year. Iron Man? Dark Knight? Wall-E? I went to more movies with so much excitement that summer than I have had since high school nearly 10 years ago.
But, I do want to see Star Trek, Public Enemies, and Harry Potter.
Buzz, you forgot to mention UP -- which honestly looks funnier than WALL-e. Although WALL-e was cute, I'm much more excited about UP. Then in addition Harry Potter, Star Trek, Wolverine, Transformers and Terminator.... sorry, it's not even a contest. Aside from the Dark Knight, Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, last year's movies were dull.
Oh yes... and I forgot to mention GI Joe, which also looks awesome. But then again, it's all about taste. I'm a big action movie junkie. Last year didn't really cater to my tastes as much
Any summer with a Harry Potter movie is a better summer.
not really big on the action stuff, so i vote last year... i hadn't been to the movies in ages but made the trip for sex and the city, pants 2 and mamma mia. really looking forward to bruno though!
ps who cares about summer? Oct 16 bbs... Where the Wild Things Are! it's the only movie i really can't wait to see!!
im super excited for a bunch of movies this year so ill have to go with 2009!
So far this year has only given us one great Summer film (Star Trek) and a decent one (Wolverine) and not much else. Last year we had two great Summer films (Iron Man and WALL-E) and a few decent ones (The Dark Knight, Wanted, etc.) Last year wins on the basis of WALL-E alone.
Wow, I went to a lot more movies last year than I thought I had. I've seen Star Trek and I'm planning on seeing just one or two on the list. I'm thinking I was more psyched for the theater last summer.
Last year was way better. The only one I'm really looking forward to this summer is Harry Potter.
Ditto--Allyace.
Star Trek was amazing!! We've still got Harry Potter and UP! before I can make a final decision on the summer movie season.
Dark Knight, Wall-E were amazing from last year!
Harry Potter definitely makes it a better summer season for me. Last summer was pretty awesome as well. This year I am looking foward to HP, My sisters keeper, TTTW AND Transformers, I still want to watch X men and Star Trek too.
I think they're about equal. I've already seen Wolverine: Origins and Star Trek, and I"m looking forward to Harry Potter, Transformers, and Time Traveler's Wife.
with half blood prince getting pushed back, it's 2009 easy. i love summer action movies, so wolverine, transformers 2, terminator, and g.i. joe are the icing on the cake (or butter on the popcorn).
I prefer 2009, too.
i think i'm going to see all the 2009 movies, maybe not funny people though... so definitely 2009 (:
Ahh, you really can't top Pineapple Express. That movie definitely made my summer.
This year seems to be a lot more muted. Minus Star Trek, I'm not really excited for any of these films in a kind of Summer Blockbuster way. I did see Star Trek and it did exceed to my expectations.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Up in the 2009 section if you mentioned Wall-E in the 2008 section.
Oh and I forgot about Harry Potter, which I'm not a big fan of, but I'd say it's a very blockbuster film like Star Trek.
Oh and you also forgot Hancock for 2008. My last post. Promise!
I don't think anyone can really intelligently answer this question until after the summer is over. Last year, I loved The Dark Knight and I was definitely looking forward to the Sex and the City Movie. This summer, I'm very excited to see UP!
i'm kind of on the fence. i feel like last year there were more weekends with movies that i wanted to see. my husband and i go to the movies EVERY weekend and this week i had ZERO interest in going to see anything, so i don't know what that says.
Lat year was Dark Knight and Iron Man. This year is Star Trek. It's a toss up but I would give up Dark Knight and Iron Man for Star Trek.
Harry Potter! That's all I'm saying.
I am excited to see a few more movies this year than last year.
I think last year was better. This year has been kind of a disappointment for me. Wolverine and Terminator were just okay. Star Trek was really good. The only thing that I'm really looking forward to is Harry Potter and Public Enemies.
Meh. I can't wait for Harry Potter and Adventureland (going to the UK premiere in a couple of weeks woohoo!) but I couldn't care less about the other films.
Last Summer wins for me because of The X-Files movie
I waited 6 years for that... 10
if you counted from the time the first movie came out. Even went to the premiere and sat in the theater with the stars. I must confess that I haven't seen any of the other movies on the list.
hard to say. the previews usually sell me. i saw six of the listed movies last summer in theatre. only 4 of the movies this summer catch my eye... it will be close
I think I liked about the same number of movies last year as this year. The diffence is that last year I loved the 3 or 4 great movies and this year they were just acceptable.
Star Trek, District 9, and Harry Potter are about the only movies worth seeing this year.
