Wednesday night was a big one on American Idol, as we learned which of the final three guys would advance to next week's big finale. Would it be the perpetually safe Danny Gokey? The longtime favorite Adam Lambert? The dark horse Kris Allen? With more than 80 million votes, and only a million between the top two, it was quite a struggle for the final two spots. So Danny's first time in the bottom was also his last time in the competition. The finale will be a battle between Kris and Adam, while Danny heads home to Milwaukee. And I'm OK with that: Danny's certainly a good singer, but I've been feeling like I've already heard everything he can do, while Adam and Kris (especially Kris, actually) continue to surprise me. Danny has a compelling backstory and enough fans to have kept him safe for 95% of this Idol season, though, and I'm sure there will be a market for his music.
Meanwhile, an Adam/Kris finale is about as shocking as it gets in the Idol universe — neither Pop nor I even had Kris making the top 12. It's nice to see a contestant who didn't get a ton of screen time in the early rounds break through. And while Adam would seem to be the favorite, knowing there were only a million votes between them this week complicates things a bit. Who do you think has the edge going into next week's finale?
Some thoughts on the rest of the show:
- Kris's reaction to getting into the finale was great, but it was nothing compared to the judges, who looked genuinely shocked. Simon even did his crazy-eyes "whoa" thing.
- Love the animated Danny, Adam, and Kris from the Ford ad. I wonder if you really know you've made it when you become a cartoon.
- Whose hometown visit do you think looked like the most fun? Danny's reunion with Jamar was sweet, and Adam's little theater group kids were adorable, but Kris's dad getting emotional was the only one that made me want to cry.
- Going back for a second — JAMAR! Love that snappy green tie. I still wish he'd made the live shows.
- I'm starting to think Jordin Sparks is my favorite Idol winner after Kelly Clarkson. It's been fun to watch her grow up.
- Katy Perry generally bugs me, but with those costumes and backup dancers, I can understand why she might be fun to see live.

i would have loved to be in Kris' hometown visit. The kind of artist Kris has been portraying through his music throughout the competition is more my taste than Adam's music.
1This made my week. I am so happy Kris and Adam are in the finals. I am not even sure how I will vote. I guess we will have to see the performances. I love that. Where the performances matter more then affiliation with the contestants.
2I'm so happy! That's what I wanted. Well, either this or Adam+Allison. But from the moment Kris chose "Falling slowly" I knew he's not another pretty face. I loved Adam from the beginning but I mus say Kris has better music taste. So I don't really care who wins, I'd buy an album from both of them.
3Kris is great. It wasn't a huge surprise for me.
It really doesn't matter at this point. We've seen many contestants in the Top 10 have more success than some Idol winners.
I also loved Jamar! Still can't believe he didn't make it through, but people like "Norman Gentle" did!
4I am so glad Kris made it the finals.I really don't know how I'm going to vote.I want Kris to win but I'll be happy either way.

6This was one of the first seasons where I was at the edge of my seat, It didn't matter who was eliminated because that person has the potential to make it big. Based on hometown crowds Danny and Kris had the bigger crowds which led me to believe it would be them two. When Kris' name was announced that was when I realized Danny was out. I thought it was so rude of that singer to have Adam's name on her cape. Jordin did good. I loved that all the old contestants were there. Paula and Cara looked dismayed that Danny was out.
7Totally off topic but what the hell is Buzz wearing? Very halloweenish.
8I haven't been watching but I hear that Adam is really good, so I'm glad he's in the top two. I may have to watch the finale to see how he does! (Watching TV suddenly became more challenging without a DVR, must get a new one soon! I've fallen behind on all my TV shows!)
9I'm so glad Kris and Adam are in the finale! My jaw dropped when Kris' name was announced first. So happy for him!

I don't even care who wins now. I just wanted Gokey GONE. Kara's face was *priceless* when they announced it. I would have preferred an Adam/Allison finale, but I'll take Adam/Kris. I think they're both talented and will have careers either way. Danny only seems like he'd be a christian artist, not a lot of mainstream appeal.

12I'm so happy! I would've preferred allison and kris/adam but this is good too. it was about time that danny left. it's so annoying that everyone was crying, especially paula and kara. in his 2 interviews with jillian reynolds right after he got eliminated he kept saying "10 months ago I was at my wife's casket"... it's a sad situation but it's like he wanted sympathy and I feel like that's why he was there for so long cuz I don't think he was great. but whatever, he's gone and I hope kris wins now!

14RE: the t-shirt. To me it looks like one of those Buddha designs popular in the 90s. With Buddha seated on a sort of throne thing and gold surrounding him.
Adam for the WIN!!! I would so much rather listen to an Adam rock album than a Kris light rock album. But thats just me.
15I was so happy with the results! I am a little confused with what Simon said about next weeks finale. What did he say it was going to be?

ADAM IS THE SHIZ! He is so unique and fun, and Kris just sounds like every other John Mayer/Ben Harper/Jack Johnson wannabe. How many of us have friends who can play the guitar and sing? TONS. And they're annoying.
172 things jumped out at me:
1) what the hell was with the african lip-synching kid dressed like pharrell?
2) what was with katy perry's cape that said Adam Lambert? that shouldn't have been allowed
18Why does Seacrest always say Kris is "humble"??? I'm from Conway, AR and I KNOW Kris and he's always been pretty stuck up. You know, one of those people that's like "I know I look good" and "I can sing good" and blah blah blah. Sure, there are two sides to every story... but the boy is not as humble as they keep saying. And this comes from someone who knows him.
19So tru, Skigurl - I don't think they should've allowed Katy Perry to do that.. but, on the other hand, I really hope they don't fault Adam for it since he had no control over it.
I guess I'm biased though, because there's nothing new about Kris. He's just another guy who can play the guitar and will have mild success after AI. Adam seems like someone who will go on to do some awesome, crazy stuff. Don't waste your vote on Kris. He will continue to bust out his guitar and sing at innappropriate times like all acoustic guitar players do.

21I'm in the minority here 'cause I was totally bummed when Danny went home. I was hoping for a Danny and Kris finale!
Everyone thinks Adam's going to take the title, but I have a feeling that all of Danny's supporters (like me!) will now be voting for Kris next week. When he wins, I hope he wipes that smug smile right off Adam's made up face!
22I agree that Katy Perry having the Adam Lambert on the cap had to not made the others feel good. I was thinking maybe he looks more like Elivis- lol but no.
23Entertainment Weekly also has Adam Lambert featured on its cover and it's as if they are already proclaiming him the winner. There is a lot not right but what can you do.
Do you remember the finale with Fantasia and Diana? Remember Fantasia was in her dressing room and got flowers from celebrites etc and there was Diana still a nobody- this is kinda of reminds me of that Finale.
I think Adam would be great on Broadway, but I wouldn't buy one of his albums.
I might buy an album from Kris...his musical choices/style is more something that I would be interested in than Adam's.
24If Adam doesn't win, he will do just fine. He's already been "discovered". He won't have any problem filling arenas and selling c.d's. On the other hand, I don't see Kris really going far even if he does win. He's not versatile enough. Kinda boring to watch. Most people want to be ENTERTAINED not put to sleep.
25I'm so glad that Danny Gokey FINALLY went home. Kris really deserves to be there!

I have watched American Idol since the beginning of the season and I think Adam is awesome. I quit listening to Rock several years ago because as I got older it seemed to annoy me(or maybe it was just the bad artists) but when I heard Adam sing it was like listening to a new genre. Whether or not he wins AI, he has a great career ahead of him. I personally will buy every album he puts out and I've heard that same sentiment from a lot of people. There hasn't been a rock artist out there ever, that can top him, in my opinion. He is going to be legendary.I do think it was in bad taste for Katy Perry to have his name on her cape. The contest isn't final yet and it had to make the other contestants feel bad. I'm afraid that may hurt him in this contest but as I said, Adam has it made whether or not he wins. As for Kris, I wish him luck but I don't see anything great about him or his voice. I am very surprised that he made it as far as he did. But since I'm a "Grandmother" of teenagers, I guess I can sort of see why. They tend to fall in love with a face and who cares if the music is mediocre. Although, I must say my granddaughter listens to pop rock and she wasn't impressed with Kris.
28My favorites from the beginning were Adam and Allison. That would have been one awesome finale! I'm happy Adam is there and will be voting for him, however I know he'll be successful whether he wins or loses.

So glad the producers plans for an Adam/Danny finale backfired. The looks on the judges faces were hilarious. HAHA. Kris was just supposed to be cannon fodder and I think it's awesome that he somehow made his way into the finale. I'm really happy for him.
I definitely got a little bit emotional during Kris's homecoming. The hug between him and his dad was really sweet.
I love both Kris and Adam. At the point, it doesn't matter to me who wins. Kris is probably my favorite, but I kind of feel like this is Adam's season. I'd be cool with either outcome. I think they're both great and I'm so excited they're the last two standing.
31My favorite part of the show was when Danny just wanted to know the results, right before Katy Perry sang and Adam said, "I want to see Katy Perry!!" I LOVE ADAM!!
32no offense but Kris Allen didn't even deserve to be in the top 3. Even just out of the top 4, when he was alongside Allison, Danny and Adam, he faded away into the background, being entirely forgettable in vocals and in personality.
33Kris obviously didn't "fade away into the background" for everyone, if he's in the Top 2.
Kris and his music are just much more marketable, IMO.
Adam's a great perfomer, but I can't envision what is album would sound like (let alone, buy it).
34I haven't really watched much of this season, but Kris's rendition of Heartless alone would have made him worthy of the finales for me. Good for him

35I have been a huge Kris and Danny fan from the beginning. They are both blessed with talent. When I think of "idol", I think of someone I would be proud for my children/and or grandchildren to look up to. Sorry, but with Adam's eyeliner, nail polish, and other things he does not bother to hide, he does not make it for me.
