J.J. Abrams' reboot of Star Trek was a smash success this weekend with an estimated $76.5 million (including $4 million Thursday night), taking the top spot at the box office (though not surpassing X-Men Origins: Wolverine's opening weekend take of $85 million, as so many of you thought it would). This was "the biggest Trek opening yet, soaring past the previous high of Star Trek: First Contact, which started at $30.7 million or the equivalent of over $50 million adjusted for ticket price inflation."
Meanwhile Wolverine "wilted to an X-Men franchise low" in the wake of Star Trek, coming in at No. 2 with an estimated $27 million. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past took the third spot, followed by Obsessed and 17 Again in fourth and fifth place.
Sounds like good word of mouth quickly spread about Star Trek. Were you swayed by the stellar (ha, ha) reviews? Did you head out to see it?

I know so many people, Trekkies and non-Trekkies, who wanted to see this. My dad (a mild Trekkie) wants to see this, and he doesn't even go to the movies!
1I really wanted to go see it and I am not a trekkie at ALL. I have never seen an episode of Star Trek. But I love Star Wars and most other types of sci-fi adventure movies so I want to go. My husband does not. Ironic.
2I am so not a Trekkie but I really do want to see this one!
3i'm not at all surprised that it was #1 although i'm sad that it didn't beat x-men. oh well. i have to say though that as much as i like the new kirk, i might like the new spock better.
4Man I really loved this movie even my bf who is not a Trekkie in anyway loved this film
5I LOVED this movie. And I've never watched a single episode of Star Trek in my life. (okay, not true. One of my high school teachers made us watch an episode once, but that was the only time and I was kind of forced into it!) but this movie is just awesome. It never misses a single beat. But then, did we really expect any less from JJ Abrams? It's a great storyline, great dialogue, hilarious and effective lines, Kirk is so funny. Quinto and Pine make a wonderful duo.
6I really enjoyed this film and I have never seen an episode of Star Trek before. It was a perfect summer blockbuster.
7LOVED IT! I saw it twice this weekend and honestly, I could have gone a third time.
8SO SO GOOD! Especially seeing it the IMAX!
9at the IMAX* whoops
10It was really really good! My mom who is not into Sci-Fi at all really liked it also.. which says a lot.
11I really loved the casting of everyone! I am completely partial to Chris Pine though.. love me a cocky bad boy who is smart!
AMAZING movie!!! Great lines, great characters, great storyline. It was a complete joy to see this movie. I wasn't a trekkie before this movie, but I think I am now. IMO, J.J. Abrams has succeeded in rejuvenating this franchise.
12I thought it was good, I expect we'll see a couple more movies. I don't know why everys hating on Wolverine, I thought it was good too!
13My husband and I went and saw this last night at the local Imax theater and it was no let down. I'm not a trekkie or even really know much about the previous series(s) so it was very entertaining to me. I think Chris Pine did a fantastic job and Zach Quinto ( think that is his last name) is just a cutie and I loved watching both of them on the screen. J.J. Abrams did an amazing job. I loved it.
14my friends and i went to see this and none of us have ever seen an episode of star trek and we all loved it! i am a new spock fan lol
15I am Trekkie (albeit I really liked the Star Trek:the Next Generation and not so much the original series) and I went today to see the movie. It is great fun in many ways! I thought the casting was very successful and Quinto is as always very yummy!!
16So good! Already saw it twice on Thursday and on Friday!!! I am a Trekkie fan (mostly of ST:NG) and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
17This was so good!!!! I am more of a Star Wars fan than a Trekkie, but I just became Spock obsessed.
