I was just wondering which other character (after Wolverine and Magneto) in the X-Men universe should be the focus of an origins movie, and while the majority vote in that poll goes to Gambit, Fox has announced today that Deadpool will be the next character to get his own movie. Ryan Reynolds will reportedly reprise the role he brought to life in the recent box office hit X-Men Origins: Wolverine:
Deadpool is known as "the merc with a mouth," a character that under Reynolds lived up to his billing in Wolverine until the end, when the movie deviated from the comic book persona, imbuing him with several superpowers and sewing his mouth shut.
It is understood that Reynolds would regain the ability to mouth off, with the movie going back to the roots of the character known for his slapstick tone and propensity to break the fourth wall. The character also was disfigured in Wolverine, though it's unclear at this time how much the studio would want to mess with Reynolds' handsome mug.
"Slapstick tone?" "Reynolds' handsome mug?" I might just love it already. What do you think? Can Reynolds carry a whole movie like this on his own?

I'll see it. Why not?
1Slight spoiler about the end of the movie should have been left for after the jump. I know it was minor but still...
2sounds cooool
haha bad joke *blog title*
3He was a funny sidekick in the 3rd Blade movie. He can do action, as a funny sidekick. However in Wolverine he wasn't even that good. And it'll have to be a prequel to this prequel I would guess. Weird.
A true Wolverine/Gambit movie would be better by far and truer to the comics as well.
4All I'm thinking about is how buff he is going to get for it... is that wrong?
5i'm soo psyched about this one. to be honest, i've never seen an xmen movie - but i WOULD go see one with RR in it.
6To be honest Gambit would have been a better play, but i seriously love Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool will be good as long as they stay true to the comic. None of that mouth sewing bit and decapitated head dud.
7UGH! This should have had a spoiler alert and/or jump on it!! Haven't seen the movie yet!!
8i agree with the spoiler being left out bit0 haven't seen the movie yet either, however, i'm quite happy at this news- ryan reynolds is amazing!
9It doesn't have to be a prequal to the wolverine movie, most of deadpools cool stories would be after that. He's got some awesome stories and he's a really fun character. And the wolverine movie was actually surprisingly pretty true to the comics. Most aren't even that close. Gambit could be good, but it Depends on where they go with it. The Bella Donna route? His youth as a thief? his Mauraders time (doubt they'd do that since he's a bad guy then). I don't know if any of that would work as a movie separately and it'd be too much to all fit.
10I have been talking about this for days. I am ecstatic to see this as long as it doesn't end up like the first 2 X men movies. A Deadpool movie wouldn't be a prequel to a prequel because Deadpool was never an X Men. He was a former teammate of Wolverine before he left the Alpha team in Canada. He has a great story and it could really be a good franchise and spin off opportunity.
11I hope they do the character justice. Deadpool is one of my favorite characters but when they have someone like Ryan playing the character they're going to change it. In the comics, Deadpool has a disfigured face, which we don't see, and he's mentally unstable.
12And I'm sure they'll edit the ending of Wolverine in the Deadpool movie by saying Wolverine was mistaken when he called Weapon WI Wade, because he wasn't really Wade Wilson but someone else.
Even if it sucks, I'll probably still watch the movie- I like Ryan and I like Deadpool.
divinedebris - maybe they could say he was a skrull?
13Maybe they could add Cable in to really confuse everyone.
Deadpool actually does have a good supporting cast in the comics.
14Thanks for the spoiler... no, seriously. Maybe it just saves me from going to the theatre tonight...
Give a movie a chance to be out longer than a week before you start talking about how it ENDS... ok?
