Ack! Hands off my childhood!
Sorry for the outburst, but, seriously, it's one thing, I suppose, to take successful '80s franchises like The Karate Kid and update them for a new generation. It's kind of another to just start randomly selecting one-off gems from my youth for the sole purpose of giving someone a starring vehicle.

When I first saw that Drop Dead Fred would be remade with Russell Brand in the lead, I immediately thought: "Oh, great. What's next, Beetlejuice?" And then I read this:
The first Fred was critically drubbed and commercially unsuccessful. But it did achieve a certain cult status and is considered a film that fell short of its full potential. The take for the new Fred is to make a film in the tone of Beetlejuice, building a universe around the concept of imaginary friends. Brand would play the trouble-making pal.
The original Drop Dead Fred was dark, weird, off-beat, and totally absorbing. Why remake it at all? Why not just write a movie for Russell Brand about a girl with a zany British guy for an imaginary friend? Is there anything good about this news, or does it just make you want to . . . well, you know, drop dead?

NO!!!! Drop Dead Fred is one of my ALL TIME favorite movies....don't let Russell Brand over sex it and ruin it.
1make it stop, make it stop!
I LOVE Drop Dead Fred, still makes me cry. What is wrong that Hollywood can't come up with any new anymore?!?!
2"don't let Russell Brand over sex it and ruin it."
He doesn't over sex everything.
3That article also says he's starring in a remake of Arthur. I like him, but really...this is too much.
4I'm with you, Buzz! Hands off my childhood! Seriously, are there no NEW ideas in Hollywood?!?
5I was PISSED when I heard this on the radio this morning. I love this movie- they're totally going to ruin it!
6I got this confused with Better Off Dead, and I wanted to make a TWO DOLLARS joke, but no dice. I never saw this flick, but I love Phoebe Cates.
7what's really sad is that i LOVED drop dead fred when i was younger...i may have been the ONLY person...but still i loved it
8eww vomit
9I did not like Drop Dead Fred at all. I doubt Tim Burton would ever allow a Beetlejuice remake. Unless Johnny Depp would star in it... but still. Hollywood needs to throw in the towel.
10I love Drop Dead Fred! But a remake would suck especially with Russell in it, i can't stand him. Why doesn't hollywood try to think up a new movie instead of redoing old movies and ruining them?
11i LOVE drop dead fred. Love russell brand. but that in no way means i wanna see this happen. bleh. it's just unnecessary. russell brand is no rik mayall.
12"Snot Face!" I love Drop Dead Fred! I'm shocked enough people have heard of it for them to try to remake it. I wonder if they're going to keep the really interesting mother/daughter drama, or if they're going to "remake" it in the way that Escape to Witch Mountain was "remade"- steal the title and get rid of anything worthwhile in the original movie.
13What a mega b!tch idea, I loved drop dead fred as a kid even as an adult, when I found it recently on DVD I bought it for my kids they love the movie. Snot face no!
14This is a bad idea! Nobody gets to makeover Drop Dead Fred!
PS: The DVD for the original was been discontinued by the manufacturer and isn't even available on Netflix...sounds like the remake might be a replacement, and that's just sad...some childhood movies should remain sacred, and this is one of them.
15This is just stupid. I've never completely warmed up to Brand (I liked him in Sarah Marshall, but that's about it), so the fact that Hollywood is digging up another movie with a cult following and handing it over to the newest "star" on the block is frustrating as all hell.
And don't get me started on the article name-dropping Beetlejuice. If they dare to try and remake that (and Burton suffers some kind of massive head trauma and actually allows it to happen), heads are gonna roll!
16i loved drop dead fred, I can't imagine this remake will be any good. They should start coming up with their own ideas.
17http://tiny.cc/Lmz2Q PLEASE SIGN MY ANTI REMAKE PETITION.
18Fred would not stand for this - it is a move that a MEGA b*tch would make. SUPPORT THE CLASSIC, PRESERVE IT'S PLACE IN OUR HEARTS and SIGN MY PETITION NOW http://tiny.cc/Lmz2Q
Drop Dead Fred, was one of the first movies I remember seeing in the movie theater. I still have the movie ticket. They CANNOT REMAKE THIS! Well I mean they can...but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
19You can find it on EBAY I got mine at Target for $5.50 in the $5.50 bin. And by recently, I mean a year or two ago. I could have sworn that target still had it because I need to get a new one, that's how much its been watched.
20I haven't seen Drop Dead Fred in a long time... I should watch it again! HOORAY!
21No, dammit. Knock it the heck off Hollywood. Leave the favorite movies of my childhood alone for the love of god! There's no possible way that this will be anything close to the original. Stupid, stupid, witless writers.
22I understand if they are going to remake it why they would think he is a good idea, but picking an actor who ACTUALLY acts like a ridiculous perverted dirty imaginary friend in real life... He wouldn't have to try really...
23Regardless I that is a horrrrrrible idea.
Drop dead fred was my most favorite movie as a child.
I think there is NO need for a remake.
PLEASE NO!! that movie was 100% awesome as is
24PLEASE NO!! that movie was 100% awesome as is
25U scared me,i thought u said they were gunna make a new beetlejuice aswell!!!sucks though coz drop dead fred is just going to be another classic ruined!
26They should leave the movie alone
27Hollywood and remakes... The only flick from my childhood that I didn't mind them remaking was Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, But Tim Burton has the decency to make movies that people are not going to want to cry through... It is film makers blasphemy to even THINK of putting a Burton spin on anything that Tim Burton is not attached to. Even better... Brand gives me the creeps.
28So annoying!!!!! I love that movie! How horrible that it's being remade, especially with Russell Brand. Puke.
29Amazing movie. Movies like this should not be remade. Now I totally want to go watch Drop dead fred now. ha.
30i think russell brand will be awesome as always. i loved the old movie and i love remakes too.
31I kinda agree with Buzz on this Drop Dead Fred was one of my favorites as a kid too.
32Worst. Idea. Ever. Drop Dead Fred should be left alone in it's greatness.
33They can not improve that movie at all... whats the point?!~
34It will suck. And I will cry. Cry for my stolen childhood. I am going to find Drop Dead Fred and watch it. It will be like watching someone on death row you know when death is coming but your too numb to fight back.
35when i was young Drop Dead Fred was my fav movie....another classic ruined *sadly sighs*
