Guillermo Del Toro is known for creating scary creatures and creepy movies — he's an expert on things that go bump in the night, if you will. So it's exciting to see him focus his energies on those undead creatures that are so very hot right now: vampires. On June 2 he'll release the first in a trilogy of vampire novels, co-written with Chuck Hogan, titled The Strain: Book One of The Strain Trilogy.

In a new video clip, the director/writer talks about his long-time love of vampires ("I used to love reading a good vampire story — but a very scary vampire story") and takes a not-so-subtle swipe at the Twilight books saying, "None of this romantic, languid, young man sucking the necks of beautiful people."
Del Toro says he loves and collects vampire fiction and views vampires as more of an evil "plague of creatures" rather than romantic heroes. From the sound of his book's description, Del Toro has created some absolutely terrifying vampires: "They have always been here. Vampires. In secret and in darkness. Waiting. Now their time has come. In one week, Manhattan will be gone. In one month, the country. In two months — the world." I can't wait to read this.
How do you prefer your vampires? "Languid" and sparkling? Or vicious and ruthless? You can check out the Del Toro clip if you read more.

Sounds great!
1I can dig it. The beautiful damned people have gotten a little stale.
2I may check it out, although I was disappointed by Pan's.
3ooooooh sounds good!
4I think scary vampires just make more sense. They are undead and hungery for blood, I really doubt they would waste so much time seducing and *sparkling* and other such nonsense. They would go right for the only reason they want us, blood. I mean really, its not like you try to take a cow on a date before you make steak out of it.
I loved the vamps in 30 Days of Night.
5But why would the vampires want to wipe out all the humans in one fell swoop? Don't they need us for food?
6Awesome!
7I love scary vampire books, the ones where the vampire is ruthless, evil, and you are unable to relate to it in anyway, its why i loved the 30 Days of Night graphic novels and Stephen Kinds Salems Lot, and I am Legend.
Now I also like the Romantic Vampire novels, but they HAVE to be well written and not cheesy and uber juvenile like the twilight series which I call the "Tw*tlight" series.
8Well it's true that vampires aren't really anything like what Stephanie Meyer has made them to be, but isn't that the whole point of fiction? To create something new and unusual and dare I say it fresh? When I read Twilight I knew it would be more of a romance than a horror story. I doubt Stephanie Meyer planned to make something scary just something alluring and suspenseful which is exactly what she did and if Del Toro wants to make something awful and scary then so be it!
9Rosa, Twilight isnt fresh, its nothing new, in fact its a rip off of so many other novels i am surprised she hasnt been sued.
10I have not seen Twillight or read the books yet, so I can't really make a comment on that. I am a huge horror buff and my fave genre is vampires so I'm very excited about this book and I love Del Toro's work. I also prefer my vampires to be scary & ruthless, so this is right up my alley.
11that's because Twilight is stupid...
