I think instead of a drum roll I'm going to need a record scratch here: McG (yes, the Terminator Salvation director) is in talks to direct and produce the film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening. Interestingly, I was just talking about how fun it would be to see this musical as a movie — but McG wasn't exactly the director I had in mind. Apparently, he's interested in creating an edgier version of the coming-of-age story set in 19th-century Germany.
McG is mostly associated with movies that go "bang," and I figured he was basically the second coming of Michael Bay. The Hollywood Reporter argues he's not actually that strange a choice because he has roots in the music business. These roots include shooting music videos and producing Sugar Ray's first album. Sugar Ray prepares someone to adapt a musical that artfully addresses delicate subject matter related to adolescent sexuality. Intriguing.
What do you think? Are you excited this musical is coming to a big screen someday? Are you baffled by McG's involvement, or are you willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt?

Oh my god. This is terrible news. I'll skip it unless word-of-mouth is good. The show is great.
1I worry about this "edgier" version he plans on doing.
2Great musical though, have seen it a bunch of times.
I love Terminator! ... Which is why I have absolutely no intention of seeing "Terminator Salvation".
"McBay" can go away (and take Snyder with him).
3I'll probably see it unless it gets really bad reviews. I liked the musical so I'm excited to see the musical adaptation.
4No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I have been waiting so patiently for this movie to be made for so, so long! And McG?! I always felt that whoever the director was needed to be careful not to make SA sleazy and trashy since it contains so much teenage sexual content, but instead make it passionate and convey the deep turmoil that these kids face. And McG does not seem like the classiest director around. Oh well I'm hoping that he does it justice for the sake of the musical. If it's amazing, I'm prepared to bite my tongue.
5f*ck McG this play is amazing, he will only ruin it.
6NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO! a thousand times NO!
7So help me Lord, if McG ruins Spring Awakening.... *sigh*...
Why would he want to make it edgier? It's already PERFECT! It changed my life. Seriously!!!
McG, if you make this into a movie, I swear there's going to be an ARMY of Guilty Ones wanting to harm you.
