Around this time of year, my calendar starts to fill up with weddings, which also means I've been hearing all about the proposals for a while now. Inevitably this leads me to think about cute movie proposals, like the one in Bride Wars when Anne Hathaway's character finds a ring in a fortune cookie. It's not a good movie, but that part is sweet.

And while the romance was doomed, I still think Patrick Dempsey's proposal to Reese Witherspoon's character in Sweet Home Alabama is totally romantic. Alone at Tiffany's surrounded by sparkles? Awesome. Another adorable movie proposal involving Ms. Witherspoon comes from Walk the Line in which Joaquin Phoenix's Johnny Cash corners his lady love on stage and tells her, "Now I've asked you 40 different ways and it's time you come up with a fresh answer. . . . I'm asking you to marry me. I love you, June. . . . You're my best friend. Marry me." The cutest!
Now it's your turn: what movie proposals do you love?

3.1 Phillip Lim
Thomas Pink
Blumarine
"A Walk to Remember" Not my fave movie esp after I read the book (really one of the best books out there) but it had a really cute proposal in it.
1The one in Knocked Up
I know she said no but it was so damn cute! I can't think of
any others right now though :/
2My favorite proposals got an emphatic NO for an answer, but the proposals in Pride and Prejudice and North and South (BBC) are really great.
Matthew Macfadyen telling Keira Knightly: "I have fought against my better judgment, my family's expectations, the inferiority of your birth by rank and circumstance. All these things I am willing to put aside and ask you to end my agony" was hilarious and memorable!
Similar situation with North and South.

4Haha zeze. I remember watching that and thinking "She's going to reject you. Quit while you're ahead!"
5Stepmom has my favorite proposal with Ed Harris giving Julia a ring box containing a spool of thread. Then he ties a loop of thread onto her finger while telling her that marriage is hard and we have to love each other like we do know and hold on to the love, even if it's only by a thread. It always seems so real and beautiful.
Also must mention the funny & romantic proposal scene in Love Actually where Colin Firth goes to propose to the foreign girl with the whole village following him.
6I agree with johnsonkm20- stepmom is my favorite. Love it.
7Ever After when the prince kneel down in front of Danielle (Drew Barrymore) and instead of a ring he puts on her missing shoe on her feet. While saying :
"I kneel before you not as a prince, but as a man in love. But you will make me feel like a King, if you, Danielle De Barbarac, will agree to be my wife."
I also like the scene in Little Women with Wynona Ryder and Gabriel Byrne.
8Byrne's character said: But I have nothing to give you. My hands are empty.
and Jo took his hand and said: Not empty now.
Mine have already been said, but Love Actually's scene with Colin Firth and Knocked Up are really sweet. I hadn't thought about the Sweet Home Alabama proposal, but I remember thinking "that guy got it right" when I watched the movie.
9Seems like Colin Firth has a lot of good proposal scenes....my fave is from Love Actually - how can you not love his horrible Portuguese? Pride and Prejudice is a good one too (both the miniseries and the movie). And who can forget in Bridget Jones: the Edge of Reason where Mark Darcy says "can I ask you a question Bridget?" and she says "any question, as long as it's not 'will you marry me?'" And his face falls. Then she demands a re-do. Hilarious!
10Although it was doomed from the start, the proposal in Serendipity from SATC's Aiden to Kate Beckinsale was amazing - having her unwrap all those boxes with the rose petals and candles everywhere down to the ring box at the end. Love!
11Smileyy123: you beat me by four minutes:) Serendipity is my fave too, and you took the words right out of my mouth about him turning out to be a Neandrathal. But yes! Very sexy! Most movie proposals are sweet/corny but not sultry like that. I like my proposals with a little more spice:)
12I liked Pierce Bronson and Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia! I'd swoon if a guy sang to me
13#1 Robin Hood.. the Disney cartoon. I love the ring the fox puts on the vixen.
#2 While You Were Sleeping... Bill Pullman has the cutest smile when he hugs Sandra Bullock.
#3 Monsoon Wedding... completely untraditional in that it is an arranged marriage, but I love how the couple learn to accept each other during the week of the wedding... and it is my favorite movie of all time.
14Oh, yes! Sweet Home Alabama, Love Actually and Bridget Jones definitely have great proposals.
But who can forget the classic Gone with the Wind? When Rhett Butler visits Scarlett after an indecently short interval after Frank Kennedy's death and says he can't keep waiting to catch her between husbands? He then kisses her, responding to her protests with: "I want you to faint. It’s what you were meant for. None of the fools you've ever known have ever kissed you like this, have they?" Sigh........
15I wouldn't want MY proposal to be this way, but I love the one from Moonstruck -- Cher's ex calls off their wedding and Cher returns the "engagement ring" (really a pinky ring), and within seconds, her new love Nic Cage borrows the returned "engagement ring" to propose to Cher again.
16I love the 3 Colin Firth ones you guys mentioned...especially in Love Actually!
17Totally love the one in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It's simple and sweet, but it gets me every time.
18Rocky Horror, mos def. Damn it, Janet! or what the audience yells (f*** off b****, you're a s***)
19Another great one is from The Bachelor (the movie) when Chris O'Donnell tells Renee Zellweger "You win" and "sh!t or get off the pot"
HILARIOUS!
20I'm with Kia on the While You Were Sleeping proposal, where Bill Pullman is surrounded by his crazy family while he places the ring in the token tray. Ditto also to the Colin Firth Love Actually proposal. And I love the When Harry Met Sally finale (this is not quite but close to a proposal) where Harry finds Sally at the new year's party and tells her all the things he loves about her, and says that when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. Awwww.
21I definitely love the one from A Walk to Remember.
But my all time favorite would have to be from My Girl, I adore that movie. And when Thomas J is all "would you think of me?" "For what?" "Well, if you don't get to marry Mr. Bixler." Ahhh I love it! Yes, I know they're only 11, but it's still cute!
22I actually loved Aiden's proposal to Carrie on SATC. Of course, I preferred Aiden to Big, but I loved how low key his was . . . just out walking the dog
The proposal in Love Actually was sweet too. Oh, and of course the one in My Big Fat Greek
Wedding.
23I like the one in Runaway Bride
24''Look, I guarantee there'll be tough times. I guarantee that at some point, one or both of us is gonna want to get out of this thing. But I also guarantee that if I don't ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for the rest of my life, because I know, in my heart, you're the only one for me. ''
I'm so agreeing with the Love, Actually proposal - classic!!
25I totally agree with the poster who mentioned the proposal in Stepmom; it seems so genuine.
Of course, I love P&P, when he completely insults her.
Lastly, I love in the Wedding Singer when Adam Sandler sings "I Wanna Grow Old With You" to Drew Barrymore.
26Stepmom and Runaway Bride totally. I wouldn't want a big planned engagement, something simple and private.
27I kow tis tecnically isn't a movie proposal, but Jim's to Pam in the Office
28too cute!
I'm also joining the Colin Firth bandwagon. I loved his proposal in Love Actually and Bridget Jones. And of course, Matthew Macfayden in P&P. I will watch that scene in the rain over and over and over again. Though I do like his 2nd "proposal" as well. And definitely Sweet Home Alabama. I'm such a sucker for chick flicks, lol.
29Mine is definitely the Stepmom proposal. I loved how clever, but also real, simple and meaningful it was. Beautiful.
30I can't believe no one has mentioned the proposal in The Wedding Planner where the really cute Italian guy proposes to J Lo.'s character with the ring in the dollhouse...ugh I cried like a baby.
&& yes Collin Firth in Love Actually was another A-MAZING proposal!
31Kia! I agree! I love Bill Pullman's smile at that scene in While you were sleeping.
32GAH!
33The Wedding Singer!
Love, love that scene when he is serenading her on the plane.
"I'll carry you around when your arthritis is bad..."
Plus... Billy Idol!
Genius and so sweet!
eleigh - that "really cute Italian guy" was Justin Chambers. I'd take him over Matthew any day!
34"Stepmom has my favorite proposal with Ed Harris giving Julia a ring box containing a spool of thread. Damn, I thought I would be the first one to mention this. It is my absolute favorite. I don't like glitzy, over the top proposals that are all for show. It should be about just the two of you. I can't imagine a more romantic proposal than when you are just hanging out in bed.
35repeat- but i couldn't help myself... nothing beats jamie (colin) asking aurelia to marry him in broken portuguese.... i cry each & every time (and my obsessed with love actually self has seen it 1000+ times)
tu vive conmigo.... ahhh too cute!
36serendipity was on last night and that was a great proposal. I really cant think of any on my own, but you guys have made me remember some wonderful ones.
37My favorites are P&P and While You Were Sleeping
38I loved the Stepmom proposal. Simple, sweet and beautiful!!
39Walk the Line, where he proposes to her on stage.
Best part of the movie.
40I hated the "Stepmom" proposal, simply because it seemed a little hypocritical coming from a divorced man and quite childish, considering the age of the characters.
I absolutely loved the "Love, Actually" one, it was funny and it felt spontaneous.
Someone mentioned "North and South" and I want to say I absolutely agree.
On the Austen front, I'd have to say the letter/proposal from "Persuasion" is one of the most romantic moments in literature and not differently in the tv adaptations.
One of my absolute favourites is at the end of "High Society", with Grace Kelly, even though it's not a formal one, more of last-minute idea.
41i agree with the wedding singer one...freaking amazing
42my other favorite is "the pants" in he's just not that into you i legitimately cried...im such a wuss
The best proposal ever, for me, was actually from a TV show ... Friends when Chandler proposes to Monica I cry every time!!
