Um, I just about started crying at my desk right now, and it's all because of this brand-new trailer for Where the Wild Things Are. Set to a version of the Arcade Fire's "Wake Up," the trailer's full of striking shots of Max in his fuzzy costume and crown, romping on through the forest with giant, gorgeously rendered monsters. It's sweet and poignant and beautiful, and it gives me such hope for this movie, which I've long thought was too good to be true. Can it be Oct. 16 right now?

This adaptation is being brought to life by director Spike Jonze with a screenplay co-written by Dave Eggers. Word that the film was having troubles early on made me fear it would never make it to theaters, and having seen the trailer, I'm not surprised — this definitely doesn't look like a typical children's movie. But I'm not sure it's all that different from some of the darker movies of my childhood (I mean, we had Labyrinth). And everything is just so thoughtfully put together, right down to the font. Looks like this one definitely deserves its place as one of my most-anticipated entertainment moments of '09. To check out the trailer, just read more.

I loved that book growing up. Memories.
1Wow, that was amazing. I know exactly what you mean about almost getting teary eyed!
2So I've never read the book but the movie actually looks quite cute.
3Cool!
I was totally in the school play of Where the Wild Things Are.
(It was not nearly as beautiful as this looks)
4Haha you only 'just about' cried? I couldn't hold back... I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE!!!!
5I just got the chills.
6My daughter and I read this all the time. I can't wait.
7BOO !! you can't see it anymore!
and from spike jonze:
This was a very early test with the sole purpose of just getting some footage to Ben our vfx (visual effects) supervisor to see if our vfx plan for the faces would work. The clip doesn't look or feel anything like the movie, the Wild Thing suit is a very early cringy prototype, and the boy is a friend of ours Griffin who we had used in a Yeah Yeah Yeahs video we shot a few weeks before. We love him, but he is not in the actually film...Oh and that is not a wolf suit, its a lamb suit we bought on the internet. Talk to you later... - Spike Jonze
8I got the chills too, missvintage. This looks so good!
9runningesq -- that Jonze bit is from today? Surprises me because the trailer premiered at the end of Ellen's show and is now on Apple, etc, so if it's not legit, it's fooling a lot of people. I remember some test footage online from a year or so ago that he denied was final, so I'm wondering if that comment could be about the old footage?
Also, in case the video above goes down again (it's loading slowly but still working for me), here's YouTube and the high-quality link at Apple
10Oh, to follow up, I think this is the footage Jonze was referring to, no?
11Oh I love this book! It looks like a pretty good movie too!
12I loved that book, I've kept it all these years for my daughter and my son.
13I just got goosebumps! I'm so excited to see one of my fave books on the big screen.

15Oh, I totally teared up too! I can't wait for this!!!!
16It looked so cute even though I've never read the book before.
17Awwww. I loved that book. I read it in French (btw, it's called "Max et les MaxiMonstres" - which translates quite easily) and it was one of my favourite books. The pictures fascinated me. And I felt connected to Max because I was quite the rebel in my years (3 or 4, I was a terror) !
18Oh man this looks amazing, the wild things look just like the drawings ! I cant wait.
19Cannot wait!
20This looks fabulous! I really like the song they chose for the preview, too.
21I dont remember the book much from when I was a kid, but it looks so amazing, I really hope kids and adults can have a moment of greatness when they go see this
It made me smile just knowing that Spike Jonze is breaking through in the directing world
