First of all: Yay! Gossip Girl is back! But second of all, episode 18 is really meh. Don't get me wrong, there were highlights (Nelly Yuki in a fat suit, sex in a costume closet), but this episode is mostly concerned with tying up loose ends in that quick, nonsensical way this show has a habit of doing, and the result was dull.

Everything was just tame and/or lame: Dan and Rachel the teacher doing their little "I must see you" dance; Serena's PG crush on the school play's director; Vanessa shooting yet another documentary, etc. And don't even get me started on the biggest, most unforgivable offense of all: ill use of Chuck Bass, who limps along in the background mooning after that Eyes Wide Shut lady who's always in distress and could be one of the worst actresses I've seen on TV in a long time. (I haven't disliked a GG character this much since Aaron.)
But! It's going to get a lot better next week, and I was still glad it was there on my TV. Ready to discuss? Just read more.
- So it's basically a senior requirement to participate in the school play, which of course means everyone tries to weasel out of it. Chuck gets a doctor to diagnose him with acute stage fright, while Nate laments he should have gone the Jeremy Piven route and called in with mercury poisoning.
- The play is Age of Innocence — the genesis of Gossip Girl in the first place — so I was prepared for shallow, pseudo-intellectual comparisons of Edith Wharton's New York to Gossip Girl's New York, but oh. my. god. Could the writers have stuffed more meaningless, pretentious babble into this episode? Between that insufferable director and Vanessa and Serena, I kind of wanted to claw my ears out.
- Once again, the kooky, illogical, completely mind-boggling Yale admissions process rears its head. Nelly Yuki gets into Yale (by text, of course — wait, what? Ugh). Which means Blair has been booted out of Yale? Because, apparently, Yale only reserves one spot per rich-kid clique? Or something?
- Blair finds out someone alerted Yale to Blair's teacher-hazing antics. Which kicks off this huge mystery (Blair and Serena's secrets are blasted anonymously to Gossip Girl, too) about who could possibly want to ruin Blair? ("Everyone's jealous of me because my life is perfect!")
- Did anyone notice Dorota's little moment in the mirror holding up hair extensions? Aw. She just wants to be pretty like everyone else.
- I thought the evildoer was rather obvious: Rachel. But Blair couldn't figure it out: "Do you have any idea how hard it is to get revenge when your enemy keeps changing?!"
- Here's a question: Why does Dan have to pass Rachel a note? Don't these people have cell phones or, like, email addresses?
- Also, Dan is so annoying when he's in "I'm 18, dad" mode. Well, you are having sex with a teacher, Einstein, so obviously you need Rufus to step in. Deep breaths. Deep breaths.
- Serena. Duh. Dude's gay. I don't like Serena like that, all desperate and stuff.
- Vanessa and Nate. Um. Hmmm. Boring still? Although his little outburst on stage made me laugh: "I hate pretentious asshats who hit on other people's girlfriends!"
- Oh, and since when are Serena and Vanessa such close bffs? And since when does Blair immediately think "Serena!" when something bad is leaked to Gossip Girl?
- Blair does what any self-loathing high school senior who gets kicked out of Yale would do after a day like that: saddles up to the bar with a Martini. And who should saddle up next to her? Carter Baizen, of course! These two ought to be fun together.

Notice I didn't talk much about Chuck? That's because I can't even deal with that boringness. Unforgivable sin, writers! You hear me? *Shakes fist in air* Unforgivable!

GUESS
omg, your write up is spot on!!! I agree with it all. I feel like the writers got lost and just pushed a bunch of junk out and tied up some loose ends. while I still loved it just because it's GG, I hope next weeks is better!
1This episode was lame. And Chuck's storyline was stupid.
And SHAME on the writers for introducing with Shakespeare ! You tainted his genius name with your dumb and pathetic scenario ! All right. Deep breath. They just need to bring back Blair/Chuck ASAP.
2Yeah, I was sorely disappointed with this episode. I just pray it's better next week!
3I remember thinking, "conveniently Vanessa is filming another documentary" when she was backstage.
4the only reason why I wasn't totally upset with this episode was because it was FINALLY a new one. But yeah, more Chuck, and either make Vanessa more interesting or get rid of her. I will admit though, Dan and Blair's banter during the actual play did kind of crack me up especially when it was made to look like they were kissing.
5- Dorta holding up the hair extensions -- loved that part !
- um, just b/c you are 18 does not mean you can have sex with a teacher.
- did like the Dan/ Blair bantering during the play
love how ridic the play was --- big theater, expensive sets, over the top costumes, etc.
6well - i think that it was a given about the whole rachel thing - and i'm glad that she's gone. aside from that though, it's just a shame that chuck is now sad - and that carter's moving in on B. i hope that it resolves itself quickly. he seems sad for a moment there.
otherwise - i'm not sure what to really say about the episode. i wanted it to be so much better and it really wasn't
7Who IS this Carter guy? Am I missing something? I cannot, for the life of me, place him!
8Penguins --- he was at some brunch thing talking about his worldly travels.. when Serena and Dan were dating, and S's grandma was pointing out to Dan that he will never fit in with people like Carter/ Serena (upper class, have travelled the world, etc.).. he's slimey!
9The director was just as horrible with the acting as Elle. I couldn't get past how cartoonish he seemed at every turn. And something about Rachel (aside from her doing a student) really irritated me. Okay with seeing her go.
Vanessa's never bothered me, and I think she was pretty tolerable this episode. Though they should find a way to work her in that doesn't involve a camcorder (you know someday she'll leave the camera on and there'll be a Gosip Girl sextape episode). Looking forward to next week and Gossip Girl and Heroes at the same time.
10Spot on, Buzz. I was wondering if I just had a short attention span last night, but I'm glad it wasn't me that just felt meh about it.
11Whoever the actress is that played "Elle", she needs to find another job. Preferably as a librarian who doesn't talk. Isn't there some kind of acting ability required for this show?
This episode was a total waste of Ed Westwick's time. Nate's onstage outburst was hilarious. As was the carriage scene with Dan and Blair. That's about all I liked.
12penguins, Carter escorted Serena to the deb ball in the first season.
13I didn't mind it as much as everyone else, but definitely agree that the writers were trying way too hard to wrap everything up, which usually spells trouble.
In response to Runningesq - I totally agree, Carter is way slimey, but you can't deny Sebastian Stan's chemistry with Leighton, especially considering they are dating in real life (or maybe because I knew that previously, I could see the tension? Don't know...). Just my humble two cents. At least it's back with new eps...
14First of all, I like your use of the word genesis
15Also I liked this episode, we needed a funny one
I almost became a Nate/Vanessa fan at the very end when they were cuddling on the couch- so cute!- even though I really don't think they belong together as I thought this episode was trying to prove.
I also loved the part in the play where Dan and Blair are arguing in between their lines.
Chuck was ill used and it killed me at the end when it looked obvious Blair was going for the other guy while Chuck was waiting for her *sob*
Can't wait for next week!!!!
Oh and Buzz:
16I don't think they're sending acceptances via text. Some schools let you check your application status online and I think everyone on this show must have a cell that hooks up to the internet
On this episode, they definitely said it was by e-mail.
In the past, I think it was by text. I remember people's phones going off when they found out they were accepted. I guess it's possible those could have been by e-mail, as well.
17Oh thanks guys. I think now when I hear "Yale acceptance" and see cell phone messages on this show my brain shuts down in frustration
18HAHAHAH! Buzz I think I enjoyed this post more than the episode!
19I really wish I had DVRed House instead of GG b/c it was really lame.
20Oh and I hate how Blair is all "my life is over, I didn't get into Yale." Sweetie, you didn't get in EARLY acceptance. Few people do.
21Yep, nothing more to add, Buzz. I like GG being ridiculous, but this week it wasn't even funny.
I've never found Chuck or Blair boring before; I'm a little heartbroken. I was *almost* glad Vanessa was there, since Serena and all the rest of the band were super boring!
22i laughed out loud when vanessa called the director annoying because of all the same things she likes and then said that "everyone finds me annoying" or something to that effect. hysterical.
23I agree with everything Buzz said. Most boring GG episode EVER! Towards the end I was just waiting for it to finish. I used to love this show so much (in the first season) but I don't know what's happening to it. The plotlines are terrible, the acting has gone downhill, and some of the worst stories are the ones that take the longest to end! Hopefully it'll get better soon or I might be giving up on this show pretty fast.
24Yay! I'm so happy that Elle is gone, but I hate the fact that Blair is getting involved with Carter, and maybe getting back together with Nate. Then again part of me wouldn't mind seeing Chuck fighting for Blair. Really glad the show is back on. For those of you who didn't get a chance to see it, I just watched it at this site here...

Awesome quality and fassst too! =P
251) Dan is starting to really annoy the heck out of me
2) WHAT are they doing with Serena?!
3) BRING BACK BLAIR/CHUCK
Seriously, worst epi in awhile. I was so disappointed.
26*sigh* I can't believe how boring the show has gotten. The first season was soooooo good and now...not so much. And I keep telling myself to stop watching and then the promos always suck me back in!!! I just can't stop!
27OH MY GOD!! i thought i was disappointed bcos i had too high an expectation for this episode. this really was an odd one. i hope next week will be explosive!!!
28ps serena is so boring. and nate n vanessa.. enough said.
spot on with your review but blair and dan arguing on stage was sooo funny. everything else in this episode was lame ie. rachel and dan drama, elle and chuck storyline was monotonous and not ridiculous but it was interesting to see leighton and sebastian (carter) acting together.
29The Chuck/ Elle storyline is based on a similar one we've all seen in movies/ tv shows where a sweet guy falls for a hooker with a heart of gold, pays her way out of the life and then she crushes him. I thought it was so boring and misplaced on the show that I could barely pay attention.
I think the Gossip Girl writers/ directors are getting really really comfortable and have stopped giving their viewers the "A" material that we're used to.
I think they've had an especially hard time integrating all of these characters from 'different worlds' in friendships and relationships that make sense. Vanessa's existence is confusing. I get that she's Dan's friend and somehow she ended up with Nate but her role in their everyday lives seems too big, and the filming is kind of annoying.
The writers seem to have removed Serena's personality, and I think they're just hyper- sexualizing Dan so that the episode will still be a little bit spicy.
And Serena and Blair don't even seem to like each other.
I want them to step up their game by next week.
30Wasn't Carter the one who got Nate in trouble playing cards and Chuck had to come and bail Nate out?
31This is the most boring GG ep i've ever seen. I was expecting more (because of the verrrrryyyy long wait) of Chuck's exposure because the review says "Chuck solving the mystery"... It was like, the story is just running in circles like i've seen that scene already, know what i mean? B and S petty fights, Blair hating Dan. Very boring!
32I didn't think this episode was as boring as everyone else thought it was, although it was pretty mediocre. The best scene was with Dan and Blair, when they were bickering on stage. The storyline with Serena & the play director was really boring and pointless. I actually like Nate & Vanessa as a couple, but they need a more interesting plot line. I'm glad they resolved the affair with Dan & Rachel, because she was acting ridiculous for her age and needed a reality check. I don't understand what happened with Chuck and that girl Elle, what was the point? And yes, she was a terrible actress. Poor Blair, I really felt bad for her at the end of the episode. It was interesting to see her chemistry with her real-life boyfriend although I don't remember "Carter Baizen" at all.
33Buzz, they explained why Nelly Yuki was the next choice if Blair didn't get into Yale in the previous episode "Carnal Knowledge". I think Headmistress Queller talked to the Dean at Yale after she had Blair suspended and he said something about how Nelly was next on the list, so she would be the one admitted to Yale if Blair's acceptance was revoked. Which is why Nelly betrayed her in the previous episode by telling Rachel that Blair was the one who started the rumors about Rachel and Dan...because Nelly wanted to be able to get into Yale.
34"You're tryin to ruin my life..."
35love those accent though...
