You know, I could kind of understand the idea of Sleepless in Seattle becoming a stage musical. And then there came news of a London musical version of Ghost — which also makes about 1,000 times more sense than turning the beloved and darkly funny 1989 movie Heathers into a musical and bringing it to the stage. What's more, Kristen Bell has already taken part in a reading of the musical, playing Veronica (though it's not yet known if she'll actually star in the stage production). For more on this crazy news, read more.
Apparently, Heathers screenwriter Dan Waters has given his blessing for this production. Here's more:
"[Waters] understood that our goals were to be creatively attuned to his original work," said Fickman. . . . The film offered many over-top-moments as well as choice lines, something Fickman is eager to bring out musically. "'I love my dead gay son,'" Fickman quoted. "If you can get that into a song, then that is just perfect."
The creative team hopes to have a fully mounted regional production ready for 2010, followed ideally by a Broadway run. The next step would see the stage show adapted for the big screen — the way John Waters's 1988 film Hairspray became a Broadway musical that was then adapted into a hit movie musical.
It just . . . I mean . . . Why would. . . . Sigh. I just don't see how this will work. Can you envision a Heathers musical? I mean, can you?!

Seriously, no ageism here or anything, but I'm really getting sick of the entertainment industry screwing with works of art because they want to appeal to the younger generations that missed the first go-round. It's annoying as all hell and speaks volume of the lack of innovation today.
1NOOOOOO
2PLEASE. DO. NOT. KILL. HEATHERS.
well, technically one of them was murdered (corn nuts!)...but still
Queen, Lick it up baby...lick it up!
3i think that this is a BAD idea...heathers was one of those cult film that we all LOVED when it came out and i just don't think that it's got it's place anymore to be remade - especially into a broadway production. oh well - we'll just have to wait and see i suppose
4Yeah, this is going to work as well as that other cult movie made into a musical Hairspray... Oh Wait - THAT WAS BRILLIANT !
You guys seriously... Ghost, Sleepless in Seattle I can't think of anything more contrived and predictable as those made into musicals...
THIS will be irreverent, funny, and unique! I for one think this is a GREAT idea! I'm there on opening night!
5I don't think the problem is the material - I would much more easily envision Heathers as a musical than Sleepless or Ghost. I think the problem is that the entertainment industry is in a rut, and has been for about 20 years. the problem is that even in the greatest era of theatre and opera (where musicals come from), all of the stories were just rehashed versions of all the great Greek and Roman myths. if you look at anything Shakespeare wrote, it's mostly if not entiely based on some other work (he just added really great dialogue and stage direction). every great writer and composer, whether it be Marlowe or Monteverdi, borrowed ideas fromthe classics. and that is exactly what writers and firectors (of stage, film, and television) are doing know. the only problem is that, unlike those masters who actually had talent, these idiots can't write smart dialogue to save their life. sorry to rant; I just get tired of the same old crap over and over...
6wow, I made so many mistakes - I meant "directors," not "firectors" and "are doing now," not "are doing know"
7Honestly- -all I am focusing on is the fact that I can FINALLY see Kristen Bell live. I love her and totally missed her previous Broadway stints by a few months.
I'm actually watching Veronica Mars right now... the episode where she sings to the Tritons? Love her voice.
Again- bring K Bell back to Broadway!!!
8If Kristen Bell does the stage musical I will go see it.
9I can see it now, a whole number about Cornnuts.
10Please god, no Heathers musicals. Lizlee is so on target with her assessment of some of my reasons why it would be totally and completely wrong to do this.
11HoneyBrown, I'm so with you on this one. I LOVE Heathers, and I don't want to see it made into a MUSICAL!!!!!!
12Ditto, lizlee89! You'd be hard put to find anything unique, especially today. I'm not so much concerned about uniqueness as I am about the treatment these remakes are going to get and the treatment of the work they are remaking. Adaptations are tricky business... and more business than art these days, anyway.
13Um, I disagree. I think this could be all kinds of brilliant.
Especially if they work "eff me gently with a chainsaw" up into the mix.
