If there's one thing Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona knows well it's creating a darkly evocative, intriguing and mysterious world in which fantastical things are possible. The filmmaker directed the uber-spooky horror movie The Orphanage which successfully scared the bejesus out of me (I managed to build up the courage to watch the movie after Giggle reviewed it for me). So if the latest rumor about an Eclipse director turns out to be confirmed, Bayona will bring his unique touch to the Twilight franchise.
If this turns out to be true, I would be thrilled. The Orphanage was one of the creepiest films I'd seen in a long time, and creepy in that slow-moving, constant tension kind of way — with a dose of poignancy and heartache at the end. And as a protégé of Guillermo del Toro, it makes sense that Bayona's so good at the dark, other-worldly stuff. I would absolutely love to see what he can do with a Twilight movie. At least he has more experience directing than Drew Barrymore!
Have you seen The Orphanage? Do you think Bayona could be a good fit?

I loved El Orfanato! It was creepy, but also kind of beautiful. It's the way a horror film should be. Not this crud where all you see is skin tearing and blood spilling.
I'm not "into" the Twighlight stuff, but I do like the director!
1I'm glad it's not Drew Barrymore.
2El Orfanato is one of my favorite movies of all time!
I love the twilight book series, but I hope that they spend enough time writing a better script (than the first one) like they are finding a bad ass director
3Ooh, it sounds like he could do an amazing job with Eclipse! Although I still loved it, Eclipse is definitely my least favorite book in the series, so I don't have super-high expectations. But it sounds like this guy could make it fabulous!
4Totally disagree- Eclipse was AMAZING...the entire time I was reading it, I kept thinking it would be such an incredible movie if they did it right. I hope this Spanish director sees the potential in the book, especially the last half (which was nail biting thrilling). My LEAST favorite was New Moon, who cared about Bella moaning for like 3/4 of the book?
5I don't know? I will keep my fingers crossed and hope its done right- sound like he could.
6I am just wondering why they are already talking about another director when they have some now working on New Moon- did he already say no to the job?
i've never seen the orphanage but i hope that it's something that can really bring 'legs' to Eclipse. i'm really psyched to know that they are going to go right into production on #3, and hopefully that means that Breaking Dawn will be put on the docket, and that stephanie can finish #5
7Aaaaand this is the part where I admit I've not only seen Twilight, but also think it's one of the most entertaining films I've ever seen. Absolutely loved it. Anyway..
Not sure how I feel about Bayona directing the new film though. I thought Twilight was completely absurd and ridiculous, but that's what made its charm. Hardwick (sp?) did a good job of making it look not too serious with all the close shots, desaturation, jerky camera movements and actors who looked like kids from your normal high-school. Bayona will probably make the film look 'smoother' and more subtly finished, but personally I don't think I could endure the dialogues/makeup/story/etc. if a more 'professional' direction makes me feel I should take the film seriously and not laugh at it.
But then again, most fans probably don't feel the same at all.
8Hmm... I might actually go watch it now...
