Fans of Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper should expect to see a different ending in the movie version than the book's ending when the film hits theaters June 26. Picoult herself hasn't yet seen the movie but has read the script, and recently told USA Today, "Having the ending changed would certainly not have been my choice. I wrote the ending very intentionally because I wanted to leave the reader with a certain message. And changing that ending changes that message. However, I am excited to see the movie and to judge it on its strengths."
Some fans of the book, however, are not OK with the change at all. Outraged by the news, a 16-year-old in Jericho, NY, has started the Facebook group "Save My Sister's Keeper!!" which currently has over 1,600 members. On the group page, the teen writes that she sent a petition to New Line Cinema's Toby Emmerich but hasn't heard back from him.
What do you think about a different ending to My Sister's Keeper? If you are a fan of the book, how much of that has to do with the story's ending? Is the idea of a different ending upsetting?

this novel is amazing, i hope the movie is just as amazing.
1the ending is CLUTCH to the story and i am not going to lie that this makes me nervous...
2I absolutely HATED the ending of the book. I have no problem with them changing it for the movie.
3This is my favorite book of all time. The ending absolutely MAKES this book. I saw Picoult at a reading here in Phoenix a few months ago. She was devastated when she had to relay the news that they'd changed the ending. The entire audience gasped. It's a huge disappointment. As much as I love the book, I probably won't see the movie. I'm tired of Hollywood ruining great books!
4This book was tough for me...I've only read four or five of her novels, and they always depress me.
5But I think it's lame that they're changing the ending...I hate when they do stuff like that!
6NOOOOOOO!
I cannot believe this!
the ending of this incredible book is so essential to its tragic story; it would be a crime to change it. would Romeo & Juliet be as epic or tragic if they did not kill themselves in the end? would Oedipus Rex be considered the greatest tragedy of all time if it were not to have that ending? FILM MAKERS NEED TO STOP MESSING WITH LITERATURE! if it weren't for hundreds of thousands of years of myths and plays and literature. this makes me really upset.
another things that I'm not exactly thrilled about is the casting. am I the only one that does not think Cameron Diaz can pull off an obsessed, tortured, and sometimes cold mother and lawyer? and as much as I love Abigail Breslin, she still looks likes she's 10! I just cannot believe her as her a 13-year-old girl standing up against her parents! I am really disappointed in pretty much everything about this movie...
7Yeah, the ending is pretty crucial in the book. I guess I would have to see the movie to judge for sure whether or not this is a bad move because sometimes things that work in novels don't work in films.
8I agree with the majority of the posters before me, the ending of the book is crucial to the novel as an entity....!! I wonder what the new ending is now
9Oh I am not happy about this!
10Overreaction. If only 16 years old put this much effort in important issues. Movies based on books never match up with the book, and nor should they. So I don't see what the big deal is.
11this really bothers me and i am extremely mad.
12not only was the casting done horribly, but now they are changing the ending!? it is the most crucial part! this is ridiculous and i highly doubt i will pay to see this movie because of the horrible decisions that were made.
WHY would they change it?
13I didn't even know they were making a movie of My Sister's Keeper. I really wish they would leave the ending the same. It's what makes the book!
I hate when movie writers completely change a book. I know there are times when you have to change little things to make a movie flow better, but changing the whole ending or plot? What a waste.
14They already ruined it by casting Cameron Diaz.
15Wow if i ever write a book that becomes a movie i will make them sign papers to say they wont change the ending. thats just wrong!!
16basically, when they base a movie on a book I try to think of them as two different things. Helps to not be dissapointed. I've never read this book, I don't plan on it (not the type of stuff I like to read) so I'll just hope the movie is ok.

18I have to admit that this really upsets me. When I lend people the book to read, the first thing they say to me is "the ending really shocked me/it made the book". I agree, the ending was unexpected and incredibly sad. I want the original ending!
19well i think that it was a judgment call to change the ending, and i'm not sure that it was a good one. however i can understand why they would do something like that for a movie. you have a certain expectation at the end of a film on how things should end up and that's not necessary in a book.
20I think it's ridiculous. I understand that things have to be changed/left out when you make a book into a movie, but changing something that major seems like a huge deal to me.
21I thought the book's ending was awful, out of place and stupid. It made the entire book pointless and weak. Changing it is a good move for them, Picoult is an over-rated writer anyways.
22I am a big fan of Jodi Picoult's novels and have read most of them. I really enjoyed My Sister's Keeper. Like a lot of previous posters I understand that things need to be changed in movies but the ending is obviously crucial to any book. When movies are changed so drastically I think it is such a dig on the author. I also know a lot of people who didn't appreciate the ending of My Sister's Keeper. Regardless I am looking forward to the movie because just because it doesn't stay 100% true to the book doesn't mean it can't be an enjoyable movie.
23As soon as I heard it was going to be made into a movie, I knew the ending would be changed.
24The ending of My Sisters Keeper turned me into a sobbing mess. I can't imagine a different ending having the same impact. Does anybody know what they changed?
25The ending is the whole story- what a bunch of idiots- but then if they were so misguided to cast no talent heinous Cameron Diaz in the movie then well, enough said. I was so pissed at the writer after reading the book and the ending, it got me angry, like truly angry- but then, I thought how brilliant, how real life, how nmot letting us off the hook- leave it to the hollywood suits to ruin real life and make it hollywood
26the ending of the book was a cop-out.
27Like one of the comments before, this is my all time favorite book, I love most of Jodi Picoult's books. The ending completely makes the book. I still remember when I got to it and just cried, I didn't expect it but such a thought provoking ending, so unexpected but so non-Hollywood. I just don't see how Hollywood can change it, it won't be the same.
28No! No! NO! this book has, just as Picoult said, a certain meaning you can't change that! It was written beautifully and should not have changed at all...I don't believe that movies are as good as books b/c w/ books you have your own interpretation and with a movie that whole story is seen through the eyes of someone else, forcing you to see it only that way. The ending shows a very powerful message and shouldn't be changed one bit!
29Changing the ending of this wonderful book is total sacrilege! I've read "My Sister's Keeper" several times, and found it very thought provoking - and the end, although sadly ironic, was also very fitting. I don't think I will be watching the film, knowing that the ending is different. As so many people have already commented, the ending makes the story what it is. There is a message in this book, which looks at life from the perspective of a child born solely to provide lifegiving blood/bone marrow etc for a sick sibling. Please read the book if you haven't already.
30Actually, I don't like the book's ending... its not a happy ending for Anna. After all those things that she went through she wasn't given the time to enjoy her freedom.
Maybe the freedom that Jodie wanted to show in the book is freedom from all her earthly pain. Yes, i guess its better since she'll be free forever but I wanted the book to end where Anna was able to enjoy the second chance that was given to her a little bit longer...
And I hope this is what they did for the movie's ending
looking forward to it!
31Knowing there's a differnt ending will keep me from seeing it. I wont waste my money.
32There are so many things about this that give me pause. Not just the changed ending, and Cameron Diaz as the mother, but also that the cut the role of Julia, and--if the trailer is any guide, it really looks like they're making a feel-good movie out of this. One of the big points of the book is that their lives have been driven by this impending tragedy for so long, that the family members can barely remember what it was like to feel good and not have this weighing on you. The mother is described as having to rummage around for a smile...that's NOT Cameron Diaz.
33I can't imagine changing the ending. It was the point of the whole story, the tragic irony, the wasted youth. Everyone is talking about the ending being changed, but I haven't heard what it's been changed TO? Any word on that, other than what I can leave to my imagination....
34anyone know what the new ending will be?
35THEY CANT CHANGE ITT!!!!
36Thank God they're changing the ending. I had read other Picoult books and found them to be awful, read this book and found it great until the AWFUL cliche, trite, cop out ending.
37I really hated the ending to the movie, just saw it.
SPOILER BELOW:
Kate dies, predictable, anna lives
38She stil wins the case
RUINED IT
Saw the movie last night, just stick with the book on this one if you loved the book as much as I did. Stupid ending and took way too much liberty with the other characters as well...also they should have let the lawyer in the movie be as funny as he is in the book. He only got to use one of his "reasons" as to why he has his service dog, Judge.
39I saw the movie last night, and although I heard that they changed the ending I was really hoping it was just a rumor. I was really disappointed that they changed it - and how they changed it.
40I saw the movie yesturday and was very disappointed. I didn't know they changed the ending and when I heard Anna say my sister died that night I almost said What??!! really loud in the movie theater. The whole point of the book (what i got out of it anyways) was that Anna's parents chose to have her genetically enhanced and born to save Kate's life. She was her sister's keeper. That was her destiny and even when she tried to change her destiny, fate stepped in and would not let that happen. To me, ending it the way they did, totally took away from the whole meaning of the book. And, it was way too sad. I like a tear jerker but not one where I'm crying like every 10 or 15 minutes. Having said all that, the one positive I got out of it was some of the actors performances. I know Abigail Breslin is usually very good. I thought she was just OK. I was very surprised that I really liked Cameron Diaz. I thought she did an awesome job. And the girl who played Kate, Sophie, was also awesome. Those were the 2 highlights of the whole movie, IMHO.
41It left me so disapointed!!!! They most certainly should've left it the same as the book - they ruined a perfect opportunity to tell the story as it shouldn'be been told!!
42The movie was horrible, plain and simple. The only good thing about it was the slouchy beret that Anna wears in the beginning and end. Otherwise, it sucks. DON'T waste your money.
43Loved the book and thought the ending gave a dramatic twist that actually made reading it even better. The movie was great, but the ending sucked. They ruined it. I don't know what they were thinking.
44I just saw the movie, was shocked at the "surprise" ending, but after giving it thought, I found it to be more in true keeping with the story. The book ending though good for reading was not very realistic. Kate was desperately at the end of her fight, and was clearly not going to make it, let alone be in good enough shape for major surgery.........especially with all the bleeding from low platelets! The whole point to the ethical debate of Anna being able to make her own decisions was more clearly defined in the movie..... whereas in the book she still did not get to make her own choice, so in that way I felt the movie proved a stronger point.......... I would recommend the movie alone on the wonderful acting of the girl who played Kate, she was fabulous.
45The ending maybe didnt feel right to some people because that was the point. Death never feels right if it take 14 years of waiting for it to happen or one simple instance. We cant choose the way death occurs it just happens that is the lesson that anna dieing holds.
46Okay, I read the book before seeing the movie, and near the end of the movie instead of crying and sobbing like everyone else in the theatre, I was fuming. That pissed me off SO bad that they would change the ending like that! The whole purpose of the book....!!! Urg.
They even were completely off on the characters, such as Jesse for example.
There's only three words to describe the movie: What the f*ck?
47I was COMPLEATLY OUTRAGED by the changes made!!! when the sister died, the tears I was crying were out of frustration, not sorrow! I was dissatisfied through out the ENTIRE thing!! I don't understand what the producers and directors were thinking! and what was Jodi thinking?!! how could she have not been involved in the making of it? this movie is an absolute disaster!!! and completly disrespectful!
48The ending in the book is amazing and unpredictable.
49Not everyone movie needs a happy ending...
I must admit that I am very sceptical about seeing the movie. To me, the book was awsome and lead me to become a Jodie Picoult fan who now has gone on to read all her books. When I found out that they changed the ending it made me not want to go see the movie at all. The ending IS what made the book so incredible good! I actually got goose-bumps and totally did not expect it. Also, I am having trouble accepting Cameron Diaz as the mother. I have nothing against her as an actress yet this part is much too "meaty" for her. Still, I will give it a try and go see it.
