Did you guys hear? The screen musical is back! Well, at least according to Hugh Jackman, who kicked off his Oscar ceremony musical medley on Sunday by talking about the box office success of Mamma Mia!.
It does seem like we get a good on-screen musical every few years, between Dreamgirls and Hairspray and even Chicago a while back.
I would love to see Mr. Jackman himself singing and dancing in the movies very soon, which got me thinking about musicals that should get a big-screen adaptation while the iron is apparently hot. I think Spring Awakening would be pretty great as a movie, and there's been some buzz for a while about getting Wicked on the big screen as well.
What musicals do you think would make good movies? And do you agree with Jackman that this is a trend worth rooting for?

Too Faced
Jimmy Choo
Robe Di Firenze
Wicked would be a good movie musical. I'd love to see that.
Spring Awakening is an amazing musical but as a movie, a non-musical version may work better.
I would also have loved to see a movie version of Disney's Aida.
1Updated Westside Story.
2Andrew Lloyd Webbers Aspects of Love
3I'd like to see some Sondheim: Into the Woods, Company, Folllies. With people who can actually sing, please.
4I think Wicked would transfer well to a movie musical. I would love to see it and wonder who would be the best in it. Naturally I would love to see the original Broadway cast.
Spring Awakening - which I absolutely adore - wouldn't fare as well. I love the music and the story but the style of storytelling with the characters kind of singing to the audience a movie might not the musical justice. The story/book however could certainly be adapted to be a non-musical and I think it would be great.
5Miishouston good taste! I love me some Sondheim! I would def love to see Into the Woods and I do think Wicked could be a good movie if the film industry doesn't destroy it and change it alot.
6Les Mis and Joseph.
7I'm with you Buzz, I think Spring Awakening would be amazing!
8Les Mis is my favorite, but somehow I have trouble envisioning a decent adaptation or how they could market a movie like that. I'd really like to see 'Miss Saigon,' but that would be a long shot. 'Wicked' would be great though, I bet.
9spring awakening changed my life (seriously, it did!), but i would be dissapointed if it was made into a movie. making a unique experience like that (especially since i sat ON STAGE!) into a movie just wouldn't do it justice and would kind of ruin it, if that's even possible. the story is amazing though and would make a great film, without the musical aspect. a based-on type of thing would be amazing.
10AIDA lol
11i miss it like crazy
I would definitely vote for Wicked. I think musicals that are more fantasyish work out better on the big screen. Like Chicago and Moulin Rouge (even if that one wasn't on the stage first). Rather than the more realistic ones like Rent (oh my was that bad).
12I think they should make Newsies into a STAGE musical! Anyone? Anyone?
13I really hope they adapt Wicked into a movie musical, it would be amazing! Especially if Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth reprised their original Broadway roles. My absolute favorite musical in the whole world is Phantom of the Opera but that has already been adapted into a great (IMO) movie. Hmmm...Spring Awakening could be good as a movie musical, but I could also see it as a regular movie. Miss Saigon or Aida could be good movies!
14eowynnie, Newsies should definitely follow the movie-to-stage show route. It has to be a better idea than Shrek, seriously.
15I haven't had the privilege of watching Spring Awakening live, but I do love all their songs and I'd probably die of happiness if I ever got to see it as a movie!
16I don't do musicals at all normally (I just don't get the whole bursting into song thing, it makes no sense to me), but I would probably watch Wicked if it came to the big screen.
17i would LOVE to see Ragtime on stage! i think its content is extremely and currently relatable and inspiring
18I think In the Heights, which is already in the works, would be a great adaption, but only if the original cast is involved. Others I could see would be Miss Saigon, (maybe Urinetown?), Company, and I think an adaption of West Side Story is in order. As for Wicked, i think that the big scale-ness of the stage show is best captured on stage, but in a movie, the magic of it would be lost. Wicked, IMO wouldn't be the best pick. Now, Catch Me If You Can, the new musical that (hopefully) is going to broadway that previewed in Seattle, would be a great movie musical film!
