A lot of popular culture from my childhood feels sacred, and The NeverEnding Story may very well be in my top five favorite fantasy movies I saw as a kid.
The movie actually had two sequels back in the day, and now it's coming around again: Leonard DiCaprio's production company as well as the folks behind The Curious Case of Benjamin Button are gearing up to figure out how to bring this fantasy back to the big screen for a new generation.
The original movie, based on a German-language novel, followed a lonely boy named Bastian who discovers a new land called Fantasia through reading. According to today's news, the new script will likely "examine the more nuanced details of the book that were glossed over in the first pic."
It's so strange to think about these mystical kid movies from the pre-CGI era. The original is dark and full of puppets and Falcor! I'm not sure a CGI-ed remake could touch the first one. Or maybe I just imagine this movie to be better than it actually was because everything seemed magical before I hit double digits — after all, even the two older sequels left me a little cold. How do you feel about this? Do you wish Hollywood would lay off the '80s already? Or is this a battle you just can't bring yourself to fight?

I don't want a new version and I definitely don't want a CGI version. I prefer the puppets.
1I can proudly say that I own this movie
It's still great and I do not want a
re-make!
2Travesty.
3not a huge surprise that they would redo it. BUT this is one i wouldnt mind having a redo on, alot of it is just awful, although I love the puppets.
4I thought this movie was so unbearbly scary when I was a kid . . .I'd really like to just see the old one again on a VHS or something (not that I'd know where to find that!) I don't think I would go see a remake though.
5I loved this movie!
6I LOVE this movie and watch every couple of years or so. I am always anti hollywood remaking any movie, especially a movie that I love so much. I am surprised to Leo's company attached to this though, so who knows. The big thing is that so many 80's kids enjoy these movies because it is so nostalgic, and no matter how amazing the cgi is or how cool these "new details" will be, it will not be the same movie that most of us grew up loving.
7do something original! we're stuck trying to redo when we can just do. /:
8Oh and how sad is the scene where the Artex (the horse) dies in the in swamp of sadness?????
9I am mad and tired of remakes.
10I never understoof what that giant flying dog was. But the parody of this from Family Guy was hilarious.
11This movie totally weirds me out, to this day. I wouldn't mind a remake that didn't give me the willies. I HATE the part where Artax dies!
12What is it with Hollywood and their damn remakes!! Be original!
I would hate to see a remake (I love the whole puppet thing. Better than some fakey CGI junk). Still more pissed about them wanting to do a Rocky Horror Picture Show remake, but this is now added to my "Please Don't Do It" list.
13If they really do stay closer to the book this time around, I think this is a great idea! I loved the film as a child, but the novel simply is SO much better. They left out many of the best scenes/creatures and changed a lot of the others. The author, Michael Ende (who is pretty much a legend in Germany), was so disappointed with the adaptation, he asked for his name to be removed from the opening credits.
On a side note, you can still see most of the props (especially the puppets) at the Bavaria Filmstudios in Munich. You can even ride Falcor (or 'Fuchur' as he is known in Germany).
14I watched the movie again and the special effects are really awful.
15I think it could benefit from a modern remake. If it sucks, we'll always have the original.
The Neverending Story was my favorite movie when I was in elementary school. My sister and I used to watch it almost everyday.
Californiagirlx7, I hate that part so much too...I always cried.
16JCP & Californiagirl - I *still* cry at that scene, every time.
Please, please don't Hollywood. Leave it alone. Let some things be sacred.
17"I watched the movie again and the special effects are really awful."
I think they're fine considering when it was made, plus modern "good" special effects have absolutely no charm in my opinion and I kind of hate them, especially when it comes to remakes of things from my childhood. Leave this movie alone and come up with a new idea for once, Hollywood.
18I'm still mad at the last sequel with Jack Black and the Aaliyah video (from the 90s). I love The Never Ending Story so much, I really hope they don't make it entirely CGI. I don't mind if they do something similar to Narnia though, because that was pretty cool.
19hmmm... i loooovve the original never ending story, but would be interested in seeing this remake... i wasn't even aware that the story was based on a book! this could be interesting, and maybe even just as wonderful (or more) than the first version, especially with added details omitted from the first movie. and the fact that the author wasn't pleased with the original film says a lot. as a general rule, books are always better than movies adapted from them, but for an author to be that dissapointed, and for the movie to still be something so well loved... an improved version sounds exciting! i'm stoked. however, i'll be livid if they eff it up. i wasn't especially happy with the sequels...
20I'm 28. I was born in 1980. I loved the awesome '80's movies that defined my childhood. The Neverending Story was my absolutely favorite movie ever as a kid. If/when I have kids, I will get the DVD and let them watch this movie. Why do people think they need to remake a move that was awesome all on it's own? Leave well enough alone!! How 'bout you use just a little bit more creativity and make an awesome kids movie of your own for this generation instead of screwing up the originals?
21omg, the Nothing scared the CRAP out of me when i was little. thinking about it gives me chills!
and i had a crush on Atreyu.
22I'm somewhat surprised so few people here seem to have heard of the novel, it's extremely famous in Germany. Basically, the film just covered the first half of the book, but left out or changed a lot of the great stuff, the sequel took some parts from the book, but changed things around a lot.
23I don't really see this as a remake as such, it seems more like a different take on the original novel.
If you can, you should really get the novel. I'm not sure about the English translation, but my German hardback edition comes printed in two colours, red and green (depending on whether we follow Bastian or Atreyu), and has some really beautiful artwork. Highly recommended!
This English edition seems to be similar to the German one I described above:

Wow, I loved this movie when I was a kid, but like others said there were parts that were so scary to a young kid! I'm actually not that upset about them remaking it. Just as long as they don't "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" mess it up, I think it willl be fine.
25I liked the book better. I read it over 30 times when I was a kid.
26Remakes are never as good as the original... the campy special effects are what make it so fun! Plus a CGI Atreyu will be such a disappointment--he was one of my fave childhood crushes!
27I don't know about this. I would watch it because I have kids now but I will always love the original. I cry at that same part now. I wanted that horse when I was I kid and I kinda still do.
28I wish they would leave this movie alone, I doubt it can be improved upon. Sadly, I would be too tempted to see it if a new version did come out.
29So..Atreyu was actually green in the book and wore purple buffalo skin. Do you think they'll stay true to that?
30When I first heard about a remake of Neverending Story I didn't want to believe it. I mean nothing can replace the original since it's a classic. I grew up with the trilogy but the 1st movie will always be my favorite and the best one. I think it's a waste of time because it won't be the same quality and CGI will just ruin the movie especially if it's in 3D. Why can't they just re-release the original into theaters instead of remaking it to get new fans?
31Oh wow! One of my absolute favorites also! I am okay with a reinterpretation. It's a great story.
32I think they should leave it be...Its a classic. Why do they always think they can remake a classic??
33Whats wrong with all of you people very few children of today will watch anything made in the 80's (speaking from experience of trying to get them too) without the cgi of today they lose intrest... This was my all time favorite movie and to see it remade and closer to the original story would freakin amazing I just wish leo would act in it. Why does everyone complain about remakes. No one out there thinks a movie is perfect everyone takes their own imagination and takes it to a new level.. And if you have the money to make it better DO IT! Besides anything that is not a remake usually is not original it just combines like three storys and pretends to be new by adding explosions or sex for the pathetic people who think that makes a movie.
34I'm really excited for a remake. When I first saw the movie, I was very young and thought it was awesome. But during highschool, I read the book and was completely blown away. I can't enjoy the movie anymore knowing how bad it is in comparison to the original story.
35Yo, i grew up on this movie! I also read the book and often wished that they did a remake that accurately reflected the book, such as the parts where bastien and atreyu go to war against each other an the gruesome REAL parts of the book, much like the Lord of the rings trilogy (they didn't candy coat the book as previous cartoons and movies did). As long as they don't make it hella corny and cheesey and gear it towards the audience the embraced the movie from the beginnning (grown up in other words) it very well might be a good idea. i mean i would definately check it out just cuz...
