It's no surprise that when Tyler Perry has a movie out, it's going to do well at the box office — but $41 million well? Dang! Madea Goes to Jail took the top spot over the weekend and is Perry's best debut to date.
Taken, Coraline, and He's Just Not That Into You continued to do good business, coming in second, third, and fourth respectively. Meanwhile, the fifth spot went to this year's "little film that could" and newly crowned Oscar-winning Best Picture. Variety reports:
Fox Searchlight reached Oscar Sunday with Slumdog Millionaire enjoying a ninth straight week in the top 10.
The weekend's other wide release debut, Fired Up, opened at No. 9.

Seriously, who pays money to see this movie?!?!?!??!!? I just don't understand.
1To each his own. I paid money to see it and laughed through out. Tyler Perry's movies always have a message along with the silliness. This time it was about forgiveness and letting go of anger. I would rather watch this film than He's Just Not That Into You. That movie did not interest me at all but I understood why others would want to see it.
2JCP, what is there to understand. These "movies" were theater pieces before they even became movies and they had a following.
3i did and so what, and enjoyed every damn minute of it, the man is good at what he does, especially the stories he tells, and dammit madea is funny as hell, lol
4Obviously I know people are seeing the movies. I just don't know anyone personally who sees them, so it is a bit baffling to me that if opened w/ such huge numbers. Obviously Tyler Perry has a big following I just really had no idea it was this huge.
5JCP- it is a little shocking to me too-- but more for the fact that I would not go see most movies on the big screen unless they really were meant to be up there- ie Dark Knight. Otherwise, I can patiently wait to watch them on my HDTV, blue-ray player, home theater for a FRACTION of the cost.
6Tyler Perry movies are funny, uplifting and inspiring. I REALLY enjoyed this one. My favorite is Why did I get married. This is a close second. I'm curious to know what other people's favorite TP movie is.
7For some reason I'm just crazy about Tyler Perry! His films are so cheesy but so engrossing and fun to watch. I love _Why Did I get Married?_ also.
