The Duchess just took home the Best Costume Design award. The movie beat out costume designs from Australia, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Milk, and Revolutionary Road. What do you think of this win?

The costumes in The Duchess were just stunning. Totally deserved.
1I think there's something wrong with your picture up there but I'm glad this won! Such a fantastic look to this film!
2At some point, I hope we get past the idea that these big, ornate period gowns are automatically "the best". A lot of the more recent period stuff was equally well thought out and executed, despite being more contemporary.
Keira can really pull off those big gowns, though. Much better than Kirsten Dunst in Marie Antoinette.
3I'm not saying the costumes were not amazing, but it seems that whenever there's a period film it wins in this category by default. Boring.
4Honestly, listening to Michael O'Connor talk about his work on this film, I really believe he didn't put that much thought or effort into it. (Which is not to say that his team of seamstresses and tailors didn't do an exceptional job of producing those costumes!) Once again, a much better job goes unrecognized in a slew of well-sewn satin. This should have been Jacqueline West's year for her work on Benjamin Button, which was far-ranging and well-articulated. She got to costume 10 different decades, and she did each of them spectacularly, not to mention that no one ages and dyes fabric like she does.
