Since it can often be hard to see some of the Oscar-nominated documentaries in theaters, it's nice to get a taste of them before Oscar night — not to mention that it might help you when you fill out your Oscar ballot. So this week I'll feature as many of the Best Documentary previews as I can.

The documentary Man on Wire already holds the title of best reviewed movie ever and could soon add Oscar winner to its credits. The movie follows young Frenchman Philippe Petit who illegally rigged wires between New York's Twin Towers in 1974 and embarked on a tight-rope act 1,350 feet above the ground. The documentary tells the the story of the six-and-a-half years during which Petit planned for what he would describe as a "coup."
Critics across the board have nothing but praise for director James Marsh's creation with one rave review calling it a "thorough, understated and altogether enthralling documentary."

Man on Wire is brilliant.
1Omg I can't watch this. I remember when it happened originally. The top of the WTC was one of the most frightening experiences I've ever had, so to see this guy on a wire between them freaked the :bleep: out of me! The pic alone is gonna give me nightmares...
2umm. sorry Buzz, but the director's name is James Marsh.
3I enjoyed it, but the whole time K was like "this guy is a dick, his interviews are so pompous."
4I loved this film!!
5I thought the story telling sucked you in and I was actually on the edge of my seat at times. Some of it seemed a bit far fetched but I believed...and that was part of its beauty and charm!
You were cheering for the people breaking the law and you weren't quite sure why - maybe in the name of art!
It was great and then to see it nominated - woO-hOo!!
it was beautiful, what a way to honor those towers
the footage of the cop describing what he saw, how he called him a dancer and not a walker, was really touching
he was pompous, but you sort of have to be to have the confidence to perform such a feat
everyone should see this, it really is amazing to watch
6Just looking at that picture will give me nightmares, there's no way I'm going to watch that trailer. I can't handle heights, even pictures of high places make me nervous.
7My main thought watching this doc was "Holy crap, this guy is out of his mind crazy." Really interesting story though!
FYI, this one is out on DVD if people want to watch it as is Encounters at the End of the World.
