As we learned a little while ago, ABC is shaking up its comedy lineup, and one of the results is a hiatus for Ugly Betty.
The show's had its loyal fans practically since the moment it burst onto the scene in '06, but its ratings have dipped significantly this year. It could just be lingering effects of the writers' strike, but some believe Betty and friends are being shelved because things have gone badly off track.
A lot of fans across the web (including you!) have chimed in with their thoughts about what's dragging the show down. Some cite not enough fun drama at the Mode offices, others think Betty's family is too clingy, and still others say Betty herself has become intolerable!
So I'm curious: What, if anything, do you think is driving viewers away from Ugly Betty?

The moralistic after-school special feel.
1No all of the above? To be honest, it's always been very soapy and I don't mind the drama, but it all seems to be going nowhere lately.
2The fact that its a Telenovela that has gone on far too long and needs to wrap it up already.
The show was based on a telenovela, those are fairly briefly series. This thing is being wrongly dragged out like a soap opera pregnancy.
3I never minded this show, but it was also never a favorite. I haven't watched it at all this season.
4I never liked the show to begin with!
5Why no "all of the above" option? I still watch, but my love for the show has definitely diminished this season. For one thing, the story arcs have started meandering -- when I can place myself in the writers' meeting and hear them saying "so what are we gonna do this week?" the show's definitely in trouble. For another, it seems that each character has been flattened into one dimension: Betty's the eternally optimistic do-gooder, Daniel's the lovesick puppy (and would someone like to explain THAT relationship to me? Yawn.), Hilda can only obsess over her business and b*tch at Betty for neglecting her family ... UGH!
Help us, Obi Wan Amanda. You're our only hope.
6Betty is so ANNOYING! I agree with misshouston, Amanda is the only one I really like these days...
7I still love Betty but I'm not really sure what it is. I just don't love it as much as I used to.
8I need more Amanda!
9I said Betty, not because I think she's annoying per say, I think the situations she's put in are annoying and I'm getting tired of her always being the punching bag of everyone. She's either being thrown under the bus (to save Daniel's ass once again) or being taken advantage of (probably to save Daniel or Mode) and I'm sick of it. I thought we were done with "poor helpless betty" last season and this was the season of empowerment. I love everyone on the show, but it's about time the writers show a little more respect for Betty's character. Kind of like Marc. He stood up to Wilie and now has an oz more of respect. Betty stands up for her self constantly and *still* is at the bottom. Is this a double standard or what?
10All of the above... and I'm tired of Betty never having anything good happen for her. Like how they threw out both romances at the end of last season. Bah.
11I'm really sick of the guilt trip Betty's family lays on her at every turn. What happened to being happy for your family when they're accomplishing their dreams? They used to be fun and funny, and now they're just annoying!
12Betty... she is so unrealistically naive it drives me INSANE!!!
13I agree that it's maybe not as great as previous seasons, but it's a way better show than 75% of what is already out there on TV. What would they replace it with, another reality show, or an even worse scripted drama/comedy that will get canceled after 3 episodes? It would be a shame if they don't give it a chance to come back around.
14I think it is easier with telenovelas because they have an endpoint so the characters can stay clueless and not develop. You don't expect it. Perhaps this is why Betty is failing... her telenovela counterpart in La Fea Mas Bella was stagnant and it worked there. Salma Hayek needs to work on changing things around for the English-language audience.
15It hasn't clicked as well this season. I even miss Henry - my favorite accounting geek!
16I love all the Marc & Amanda we've been getting this season, but it feels like Betty herself is repeating herself in every episode.
NO SCRIPT! BORING, NEEDS REWRITE!!! BEFORE IT'S CANCELED. SHOW, MOVED TO NEW YORK..BUT NEVER UTILIZED THIS VITAL GREAT CITY! [their writers, have gone from sitcom, to sitcom, with the same plotlines for every show, they ever worked for, since..Andy Griffith. It's been done, said, written, a million times before! Slight fashion tilt worked, but then, Plot lines drifted...badly, ect.
17its just boring! i refuse to believe that a young woman, who has worked @ a fashion mag for a couple years would still be that naieve. i'm sure she would have had a make over by now too. make her geeky-chic. america ferrara is gorgeous, i'm tired of braces and bangs!
18It's the same story over and over and over. And Betty (or anyone on the show for that matter) never learns from her mistakes.
It's frustrating.
19Betty is annoying and all her bad choices are annoying. I have completely stopped watching it.
20Uh, the lack of Gio? Her family, too. I understand that family dynamic, since mine can be similar, but they need to quit it with the guilt trips. She's a grown-@$$ woman and should be treated as such.
21I still love Betty!!!!!
22The predictable story lines, the lack of surprise, the prolonging of events are all combining to make me less and less interested in Ugly Betty. Maybe it's time to wrap everything up and move on gracefully while there's still a chance that viewers care.
23I agree about getting rid of Gio and the baby daddy love interests was the downer for me. That was good drama.
24And the whole plot with Willy and the baby and Christina is just weird. I also liked Rebecca Rojman's character on the show.
Betty has just become annoying to me, as has her family. I want more Amanda and Marc!
25We want a Betty Makeover!!! It's about time
26I watched for the first time in a long time yesterday. The episode was pretty good and I actually liked Betty's role in this episode. But the Ignacio storyline was pointless and boring. I didn't like how she ended up moving back home. As for loss of viewers, I can see why! I have barely watched this season (premiere only) and within a few minutes I figured out exactly who everyone was and what was going on plot wise. They need some fresh twists.
2710 reasons why I don't watch.
1. They got rid of both Henry AND Gio. AT THE SAME TIME. Who were maybe the best characters in the show last season. When's Betty going to get some lovin'? (sorry, but it's true...). Moody neighbor rocker boy is just not cutting it. He's not interesting. Did I mention he's moody?
2. After two years of working at a high-fashion mag in NYC, you would think she'd have developed some thicker skin. And some sense of the fact that there are mean/manipulative/b*tchy people out to get her.
3. This whole Molly/Connor/Willy/Daniel love square is annoying, and it doesn't really make much sense.
4. MORE JUSTIN. Please. PLEASE have him intern at Mode. Or just have more scenes in general.
5. Less of other Suarez family members. Which leads to number 6.
6. OMG WHY IS SHE MOVING BACK HOME?! No more cute Amanda vs. Betty arguments about paying bills and cleaning the kitchen and Amanda's ugly dog eating Betty's lunch!
7. If you're going to have a guest star, have someone relevant and funny come along. The Kimmy character would have been a bajillion times funnier if it had been someone, I don't know, NOT HER.
8. Alexis needs to come back. The only interesting plot twist this season involved Alexis and Daniel Jr.
Okay, that's that. Sorry for ranting. It just sucks because 'Ugly Betty' is (was) one of my favorite shows, and now that 'Pushing Daisies' has been cancelled (WHY?!), I've been going through severe withdrawals while simultaneously losing faith in the entire TV industry.
At least there's '30 Rock'!
28Whoops, forgot the last two:
9. They NEED to get Willy's orange-ness under control. For a second I thought I had to replace my TV, but no... it's just her extra-orange-ness coming through the screen.
10. Commit to this YETI thing, whatever it's supposed to be. It comes up maybe... once in each episode, and it was supposedly this major thing for both Betty and Marc (need more Marc, too).
29No Gio or Henry! There's just no romance that I'm rooting for now. I rooted for Henry season 1 and Santos for Hilda and season 2 I liked Gio but now what? Jesse is a no! I was hoping earlier that Hilda would get together with that politician that helped her with her salon but he hasn't been on.
30I have recently removed this show from my DVR list, and I think syako above summed up the reason really well- no one on this show learns from their mistakes. It's gotten beyond tiresome and I'm sick of rooting for someone who's clearly just going to make the same dumb choices again and again.
31agreed with McSquish - thought this was supposed to be the year of betty? and i keep saying this over & over, i get it... the show is supposed to be called "ugly betty" but you would THINK after a certain point in time, she'd get a makeover (or step it up a notch, at least slightly) but she has significantly gotten worse. characters are supposed to grow, not remain the same. even WILLI has gotten better, and i could NEVER stand her. for crying out loud!!!!!!
and the family. enough already.
bring back gio or nerdboy. none of this lame-o jesse crap.
shouldn't the baby be due by now?
BLAH ABC. YOUR SHOWS ARE GOING DOWNHILL. enough. (except lost, thanks for that).
32Yeah...Betty's gotten a little annoying. But the show has just generally gone down hill in general...the plot lines, the characters, pretty much everything. They just haven't been able to move it forward. I don't think it's unwatchable yet, but it's getting there, unfortunately
33It also needs more love interests for Betty. We got Jesse this week--sort off--but then they made it clear they're cutting him off. Which is fine with me because he wasn't a great character from the beginning, but now we need another love interest. A la Henry. Although I can't see them matching Henry ever again--he was so adorable and so perfect for her. Grrrr.
*sort of
34The story line just seems to be lagging and dragging. I got back into Smallville so it's scheduling conflict for me as well.
35The lack of Gio Rossi hotness in the screen could be a hint. They charmed the viewers with a buildup of romance, comedy and sexy banter between Betty and Gio, for what? For a season 3 premiere explaining that Betty would rather become a workaholic and spend her savings in a self-discovery trip than share her new apartment with hot sandwich boy or a FREE amazing trip to Rome. And then, just minutes later fall for the first guy she saw out her door. /rant
36Okay, back to your choices (because I have to choose) well, Betty herself has become a lot childish, selfish and whinny. After all the promise of a growing-up season 3 all we got to see is an awfully dressed teenage girl who can't focus in what she wants in her life (and can't even write a decent 5-year plan).
Also that there are not story arcs and the rejection of everything related to season 2 (Cliff, Christina/Willy Baby drama, Alexis, DJ, Betty/Gio, taking over Mode, Amanda search for her father, etc). It's like the show went to a temporary amnesia or something.
I guess it just doesnt have the same magic it used to have..and i REALLY miss my Gio!
he was
such a great add to season 2
37I Still Love The Show Ugly Betty :0
