The nominees for this year's Best Picture Oscar are the following:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
In the months leading up to today's announcement, there was talk that The Dark Knight might actually nab a Best Picture nomination. Do you agree with the five movies selected for this category? Do you think The Dark Knight is deserving of a nod from the Academy? If so, which of the above movies would you bump in order to include it?

I haven't seen all of the nominated films yet so I can't say for sure. But I did see Milk and Slumdog, and I think they were both better films than Dark Knight.
1I think it should have instead of Benjamin Button.
2maybe benjamin button didnt need to be there....
3I don't think Benjamin Button deserves a nomination for Best Picture. It's a visually stunning film, but the script wasn't that good. The supporting characters were better developed and a lot more interesting than the main ones. I don't feel Brad Pitt should have been nominated for Best Actor either.
4i voted no. the movie just wasn't for everyone to watch.
5I don't think so.
Although, I would bump Benjamin Button and put Revolutionary Road on there.
6Heath Ledger deserved his nomination, but "The Dark Night"? Best picture? I don't think so.
7I would have out Benjamin Button, too. It was a good movie but nothing memorable. And of course The Dark Knight should have been nominated. Anyway, I'm rooting for Slumdog, or Milk.
8*left out
9The Dark Knight was great but not the second coming of the Messiah that a lot of people think it is.
10bump benjamin button.
11I agree, luckiedog. To me, TDK is entertainment. The most entertaining movie is not always best picture worthy.
I'd be curious to know why people think TDK is more worthy than Benjamin Button.
12Bump Benjie
13I'd bump Milk or Benjamin Button. And I agree that Revolutionary Road deserves it, and probably more than The Dark Knight
14If titanic was nominated then Dark Knight should have been
15no but Australia should be ther!!!
16Nope.
17I agree shiningeyes, Heath Ledger was good but I feel like people only thought the rest of the movie was so amazing becasue of Heath, his performance and his death.
It's not a good movie, but not any better than the ones that were nominated.
18*I meant it is a good movie, but not any better than the ones that were nominated.
19"I'd be curious to know why people think TDK is more worthy than Benjamin Button."
Pretty sure people already said why. It was nice to look at but forgettable.
20I absolutely love the Dark Knight not just bc of Heath Ledger, but bc it was a great Batman story taken from some of his best comics. Oscar worthy? I would have to say no. While it was amazingly done, but there are many other movies out there more deserving of the award. If anything, Best Comic Book movie of the decade.
21People said why they didn't like Benjamin Button. They didn't say why TDK was better/more worthy of a nomination.
22So, I'm pretty sure people didn't already say why.
23Yes and I would bump MIlk or Benjamin Button.
I think it should have gotten nominated for two reasons:
1) It was excellently written, very gripping story that is even applicable to the world we live in today in its themes. Benjamin Button? Not so applicable.
2) Everyone loved it and it made a bunch of money. Now generally I wouldnt advocate nominating something based on that but the fact is that most of these movies no one has ever heard of or seen. Unless you live in a city, you don't get these movies in your town. I think its time the Oscars go back to reflect what Society thinks is great work also and not just a bunch of Hollywood execs who pick mainly on politics anyways.
24The Dark Knight was good but it lacked the depth that the Best Picture usually has. I don't meant that the wrong way because it was more meaningful than other action flicks but at the same time not Oscar worthy. And I hate to say it but I don't think there would be this much buzz around it if Heath Ledger (RIP) hadn't died.
25Yes, and I would bump Milk.
26I want to say that Dark Knight should be up there instead of Benjamin Button, but I haven't seen it so I can't. I also thought Wall-E would have had a decent shot in being up there too. It's hard to make high art out of a popcorn movie, and I thought Dark Knight and Wall-E were major Oscar contenders for Best Picture instead of the classic Oscar bait (i.e. Benjamin Button, Revolutionary Road).
27I thought The Reader, Benjamin Button, and The Dark Knight were all good, but I think Revolutionary Road deserves a nomination over any of these three.
28Why is it all these movies seem to have been released within the past 3 months? I think Dark Knight should have def. been on there somewhere... but I'm rooting for Slumdog!
29Being nominated for an Oscar doesn't mean the film is good.
30i really do think that it was a great movie and would have loved to see it on the list but i'm not sure what the sacrifice would be. i don't know if frost/nixon is really as high up there...
31Heath's performance was OUTstanding. So was Christians. But the movie was toooooooooooo long. I liked it, but I don't think it was oscar worthy. A couple of performances were, but not the movie as a whole.
32I'm disappointed that Revolutionary Road isn't one of the nominees. Milk, Slumdog, and Frost Nixon are well deserving, but I'm not sure about Benjamin Button and The Reader, which was a great film but not Oscar worthy IMO.
33I thought "The Dark Knight" was the most overhyped piece of crap in the history of cinema, so it surprises me that I actually thought Heath Ledger's over-discussed performance was actually worthy of the praise -- it was the only thing I liked! I am so happy to see that it didn't make the list.
34SlumDOOOOOG! I mean, i love the Dark Knight, but Slumdog is so freaking original. People are gonna hate about SD bc they can't believe it's realistic (not the game show part, but the poverty level). Little kids in Mumbai love it because it is realistic - http://www.newsy.com/videos/slumdog_millionaire_from_rags_to_riches/ - sorry for the linking to the strange site but I can't find this bit anywhere else, and I love this little girl's expression...like she's interviewing in the middle of this weird Indian maze city about some movie in America and she's super serious about it.
35Yes and I would remove Milk from the list.
36It should have at least gotten a Best Director nom. The Academy is so incredibly snobby about action films, which I can understand when they're like Transformers, but The Dark Knight is so much more.
37Ben Button doesn't deserve it and either does Dark Knight, yes it was an outstading movie but it is still an action blockbuster that doesn't have as much depth as the other. There is nothing special about the movie beyond the amazing acting and a good storyline (not outstanding)
38YES
39I really don't think it deserved a best picture nom. The best thing about it was Heath Ledger but I really felt he was underutilized. The plot of the movie went on way to long and I really didnt think the acting of anyone else was very good.
40I know a lot of people were pissed off that it didn't get the nomination, but in my eyes, I liked the movie. If the "Academy" doesn't agree, oh well. It is what it is, and I would probably bump all of those movies off anyway. I'm not a person who likes movies like the ones nominated...they all seem too preachy.
41I think The Dark Knight hands down deserved the nomination at the very least. It is every bit as good if not better than some of the movies nominated. Don't get me wrong either, I am not a super hero fanatic. In fact when I saw it for the first time I really didn't think about it as a super hero movie. The story was fantastic, the acting was incredible all around, and it transcended it's genre. It was very realistic for a super hero movie, which is a pretty hard thing to accomplish. Benjamin Button is a bullsh*t nomination, in my eyes. 13 nominations. Are you serious? Brad Pitt's nomination for best actor is also ridiculous. I loved him in Burn After Reading, and he's had other great character roles, but sometimes he's just Brad and not that great. Milk and Nixon got nominated because of the political content, and I haven't seen slumdog or the reader so i cannot comment on those. If the lord of the Rings can win, why snub the dark knight?
42I don't think The Dark Knight should have been nominated, it was really overhyped in my opinion.
I'm surprised that so many people hated Benjamin Button or thinks that it is unworthy of the nomination. I thought it was a great film, it's not perfect and it was a tad overrated as well, but I think it was one of the best movies of 2008 and contrary to what someone said on here, there is a lot that you can learn from this film. How precious and short life is, how you just have to let go of your regrets at the end of your life(Benjamin Button's dad), etc.
