OK, this news is blowing my dome on so many levels. First of all, the news itself:
After months of gossip and speculation, [Gossip Girl] creators/exec producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are proceeding with a spinoff that will serve as a prequel to the hot sophomore drama and chronicle the wild teen years of Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford) in Los Angeles in the 1980s.
So. . .
- Now we know it is all about young Lily, which is fine by me. Schwartz said he didn't want to "upset the chemistry" of the current cast and I think that's smart.
- L.A. in the '80s?! Yeah!
- Schwartz says he is also "inspired by the opportunity to tell overlapping stories and introduce characters that will appear in the past and the present — and hopefully enrich both shows," which is so time-warpy and kind of fun. Think of the possibilities! If we meet Lily's first boyfriend in the spin-off, say, he can show up on Gossip Girl later to wreak havoc. That's some synergy, folks, and I like it.
How do you feel about this? Good news? Bad news? Do you wish another character were getting the spinoff instead?

I just can't believe I didn't think of that as a plot for the spin-off! I could have SWORN I thought of/exhausted every possible spin-off scenario! lols! This one makes so much sense! What a great choice! I can't wait to see what they'll do. :0)
1I like that idea. I haven't been keeping up with GG, but I try to watch online or in reruns if I can, and I'd likely do the same for any spin-off show.
2Great idea. A bad socialite that only wants to be a rock n' roll groupie on the Sunset Strip in the middle of the hair band frenzy I hope.
3lame. i dont see how this is any different than the serena storyline on GG now.
4yay! i cant wait.
5love it!!!!! so many more twist and turns to come!! and its going to be ssooo different than serena! Lilly has her mom ultimately winning the whole time!!! this is going to get interesting!
6Sweet dude.
7smart thinking!
8Love it! I really can't wait!
9I don't think it's the same as the Serena story. In my mind, Lily in her teens is much, much more out there and definitely WILD. And, despite what lengths GG goes to in order to prove that it's "edgy", LA in the 80s has the potential to be 732% more scandalous than the UES could ever be with these prep school primadonnas.
Remember, Lily dated Rufus - she's not at all the same kind of rich kid as her daughter. Bring on the coke, sex, and grunge! Huzzah!
10Sounds good! Like the new layout.
11I think it's got potential!
12what about Dorota spinoff?
13I hate Lily!
I really like this whole concept! Can't wait.
14Hmmm I'm not sure. I like Lily, but I think part of her appeal on the show is we don't know much about her. If they get rid of the 'surprises of her past', GG will pretty much lose its 'I didn't see that coming!!' effect.
I'm also a bit afraid it'd totally mess up the continuity on GG, esp. since it's already pretty bad. I still can't figure out how Lily managed to go to Brown, have a baby, have it adopted, follow Rufus on tour, pose for Mapplethorpe, meet her first husband and have Serena within, what, 2 years?!?
Not that GG is too worried about continuity, though..
15Yay! Love Lily and it would be great to see young rebel Lily in 80's LA.
16This sounds really good but TV has a bad way of recreating the '80s--it's like physically impossible for them! Has anyone else noticed that? It just looks like 2009 "doing" 1985. Badly.
17well it's going to be interesting - that's for sure.
i guess her character could be
great to have her own spinoff - so we'll see how they accomplish this one.
18Woah. Didn't see this one coming, but definitely a good surprise! I really like Lily.
19I agree penguins! No one has ever been able to style the 80's in a subtle way. If anyone can do it it's the Gossip Girl team!
This sound like SUCH an awesome idea!
20I don't think a spinoff of any kind of a good idea. They're kidding themselves here. Getting alot of press for your show is not the same as getting good rating, and the latter i strongly doubt.
21This sound's good to me!
22Lame.
23It could be like, Less than Zero meets Francesca Lia Block.
Hope they don't call it something cheesy like "Lily of the Valley"
24Could be interesting, depending on the execution.
A mirror of I'm-so-good-at-being-bad Serena now? Not so much. Lily-the-wild-child? Could work. I have a feeling that Lily's teenage hijinks were much worse than whatever Serena would even dream of.
25at first i was like 'oh god' but now i think it as a really good idea.
26i like the idea of setting in the past and the link in between old and present characters. sounds like something id watch.
I do like the idea. See the characters we love on a different show and keep the actors we love on GG.
27I think that this sounds like a great idea! I would love to see a wild child Lily in '80s LA and then eventually see her meet Rufus & have his baby before giving him up for adoption.
28Bring it on!
29is the show still going to continue with the spinoff going? or... is it just going to be the spinoff..
30sounds good ! can't wait to see it =)
